Topic: Heavy Metal Bad For Your Heart?

Listening to stressful or disturbing music can be bad for the heart, according to a new study.

An American investigation found that genres like Heavy Metal narrowed arteries and made people more anxious, where as “joyful” music improved blood flow.

John Denver-style country music was found to be the most uplifting.

Dr Miller, who led the study at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, said people shouldn't read to much into the results, “although you could argue that country music is light, spirited, a lot of love songs.”

The study asked the 10 healthy, non-smoking volunteers to avoid listening to their favorite music to minimize "emotional desensitization”.

Then, after two weeks, when they listened to music they liked “they would get an extra boost of whatever emotion was being generated," Dr Miller said.

The results found that volunteers' arteries opened 26% wider on average during music they liked but narrowed by 6% when “anxious” music was played.

Dr Miller added: "Needless to say, these results were music to my ears because they signal another preventive strategy that we may incorporate in our daily lives to promote heart health.”

Re: Heavy Metal Bad For Your Heart?

Funny John Denver's music didn't seem to do alot for his own health.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

I think the fact that he died in a plane crash had a lot more to do with his death than his music.

Re: Heavy Metal Bad For Your Heart?

I was in the study.  That's why I haven't had a heart attack yet.  Of course, John Denver music has been known to induce comas.  I got lucky.

Re: Heavy Metal Bad For Your Heart?

Ack I hope they don't start blasting John Denver music in hospitals now.  I'm not a fan of his by any means but there are definitely worse things to listen to than him.

I listen to metal but find it to be a stress release, when I'm wound up I'll blast some old Metallica and usually feel better after that. big_smile

John Denver music could be used as a replacement for syrup of Ipecac.

With apologies for lurching this topic still further away from its origin - but since we're talking about certain 'artists' and their influence on states of mind or mental health - Gunter, can you offer any explanation for the truly bizarre fascination among (some) Germans for the "music" of David Hasselhoff?

Re: Heavy Metal Bad For Your Heart?

Sorry, I even didn´t know that this fellow is singing. I only know him as Pamala´s Bademeister, driving strange cars and having an alcohol problem. But I am sure somebody will give me a list of his best CDs. Does he sing even better than John Denver?
