Topic: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

Thought this forum looks like a really good source of info for a gearhead like myself

I managed to catch the re-arranged Manchester gig on Monday.
Looked like it was rented gear due to the commute back from France at short notice
Joe if you are reading, your tone sounded spot on.
It was funny to see your guitar tech scambling around on stage scratching his head trying to find out why stuff wasn't working 5mins before the start.

2 questions:
1) Was that 2 JCM800s or 2 Jubilee amps you were playing through?
2) What was it like not having your usual set-up did you have to adapt anything?

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

I bet "Funny" wasn't in Dave's vocabulary five minutes before Joe came on..... More like &*^%$£ %$££^ *()£$£%&* The guy's a star, even Aaron didn't get too close!

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

Welcome Matt
You'll find that this is great community of folks into music, gear and tone.  I've met a lot of people through here and some pretty decent connections.  I've even made a few friends.

Joe posts regularly so hopfully he'll lend some insight for you.  Personally I feel lost without my regular rig.

Again welcome and have fun!

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

He had rentals for the Florida gigs in May. I think they were JCM2000s and a couple of pedals thrown together on the floor (Wah,OD,and DD3 I think). He sounded as good as any other show to me.

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

It was two JCM2000 DSL100s (as opposed to the TSL100). Yeah Dave looked like the world was caving in when one amp would not come online through the foot switching setup.

Having seen Joe 5 times previously with the full European rig (Jubilee, Cat 5,Two Rock,Van Weedon(SP)) I was slightly concerned about the 'Fly In' rented kit taking the edge off the Tone Master!! No worries!!! In fact I thought it was the best gig I've seen.... ever!!!

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

I've always heard the DSLs sound better than the TSLs. I've never played either.

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

Proves that the tone is in the fingers doesn't it?

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

Thanks for the welcome all.
Tone is indeed in the fingers, but, sadly not mine!
Funny how the newer marshalls get a bad rep in comparison to the older stuff.
They sound fine to me.
Ironically though, I recently got a custom modded amp based on an old Marshall; so I'm not really one to talk.

I've felt really inspired to crank my amp since the gig. I've been away from home so it's been building up. Thankfully I'm able to play tomorrow

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

Hey Everybody,
The Two JCM 2000 DSL's are good for the fly in shows.. I use two of them into one cabinet set to stereo.  I use the clean channel one set to crunch on set to clean and turned up to about 7 each with the gain at 10.  I use a tubescreamer that is always on for the gain.  I vary the tone by using the volume and tone controls on the Les Paul.  Its a work out but it gets the job done.  It sounds pretty close not as complex in the mids.. But Warren knows how to make it sound good always... it make its easy for me having him do the sound..

is it an old ts808 or a ts9? reissue? I personally can hear a big difference between the two models. Do you use strats anymore? would the same techniques apply?

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

No Strats ever !!! TS 808 reissue.. They are fine.. Good mids.. makes a thud.

Re: Q's about Joe's Manchester Gig Rig

Joe Thanks for the enlightenment on the twin DSL setup. I got a TS808 re-issue on the saturday before the Manchester gig. Previously used an Xotic AC boost which seems a bit thin now in comparison. Yeah thud is right on the mark.

Thanks also for signing the JBLP back plate and CoA after your SC too. Public apology for interrupting when you were busy. Felt it was rude in retrospect.

probably a dumb question, but do you have any i could take off your hands? hehe just kidding wink

i've been looking at the 808 reissues and after this confirmation, I will probably pick one up. Also good to know they sound just as good with humbuckers.
