Topic: What is Indigenous like like?

Who has seen them?
Are they great live?

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

Mato is one of the best young guitarist out there. I have seen them several times over the past 5 years and they never dissapoint.
It's a different supporting cast now though. The bass and drums may change but MATO is still the man that carries the Indigenous sound. Absolutely go see them/him if you have the chance.

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

My buddy Jeff is 100% right. They have some great studio albums, but live it where it's at with Indigenous. Mato is certainly the star of the show. I saw the new line-up with Jessie and Cheney recently, and this is a very capable backing band.
Be prepared to be blown away by Mato and the boys live.

Definitely a fun concert!

The blues isn't about a look or a specific sound, the blues is something deep within. But the sound doesn't hurt things, you know? ~ Ben Hernandez

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

Are they any different than santana/srv style?
I am honestly not looking to start anything bad - just wondering what to expect if I bought the cd.
I have heard "heaven" countless times on the radio.

You're thinking of Los Lonely Boys. Indigenous is hard blues/rock. Honestly, Mato smokes Henry Garza as a guitarist.

Deezer, I absolutely agree with you on that one among others!

I really don't think that Henry Garza is an amazing guitarist like many others think- he's just a good guitarist... definetly not the best at what he does- also he needs to lay off the wahwah!

Oh yeah, wah-itis is a terminal sickness that can only be cured with conscious avoidance of the pedal. The wah should be treated as a condiment and not as a side-dish or even a main course...

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

Indigenous is awesome. Although a better name for the act might be "Mato Nanji" since its really about his singing and playing. I saw them in concert earlier this year and then in November. The sound had already changed in a matter of months. The drummer had changed which I think made the difference. This new drummer has great talent but I feel like he is in competition with Mato, making the volume increase a little too much. The sound of the November concert I saw was more muffled and not as clear as concerts even from this past summer of 06.

I also think that Mato needs to work on promoting himself more, that is if he wants to get bigger/more well known. I don't know, mabey he doesn't even care about all that, but if he does I know there are things that would improve PR for the band.

I am looking forward to see the tour schedule for 07. Hoping they come this way again soon.

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

Mato is a great guitar player, but for me I like the soulfulness and emotion of his lyrics and vocals.

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

I WONDER WHY.  This is all you need to see to get the idea of what MATO is all about. At the 5:15 mark Mato lays into one of the best leads EVER.

Oh yeah at 7:30 or so the percussionist goes freakin nuts. Incredible footage.  ENJOY!

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

Thanks for bringing this back up Jeff. They're playing in Baltimore on the 24th and I've been considering going. I saw them at Tampa Bay Blues Fest in 2006 and really loved them. I hadn't heard of them but thought a Blues/Rock band of Native Americans deserved my attention. At that time I think they were related, is that right? And, Ladies, Mato is very handsome......

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

Cathy:  According to the Ram's Head website, the show is Tues, 9/25.  Unless Jane takes me up on it, I have 1 pretty decent ticket available I need to get rid of.  I just want face value.  Drop me an email if interested.

Yes Cathy, Mato is very handsome! He is a very quiet and shy person off stage. Here are some pics of Indigenous when they played under the Arch in St. Louis last Sept. and also some of Mato's in store appearance at Vintage Vinyl where he did an acoustic set. Oh, also some terrible pics of me with Mato (don't need to look at those! lol - although I was wearing my JB est. 1977 shirt!)

I would strongly suggest seeing them if possible!

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

Hey Rhonda,
I have both those perfomances on dvd.  Do you recall seeing anyone video taping? The dvd I have is the St louis show and the instore appearence.  Small world.

It came thru a friend in Cali that we all know and love here on the board.

Re: What is Indigenous like like?

I do recall seeing a guy in the store with a video camera, I asked him about it and he said that he was taping it for their street team I believe.

It was an incredible evening just perfect for a concert. Did you by chance get to see Martha Redbone who opened for Mato? Her show was fantastic especialy with the little boy in the colorful costume.
