Topic: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

Hey guys, I have a Fender '59 Bassman RI with Eminence speakers and I have a few problems with it. At the volume of overdrive, it is waaay too loud for a house. Second, when it does reach overdrive, it doesn't sing, it grunts. And believe me, I know that this is a famous essential and defining aspect of the amp's tonal spectrum, and it does sound great with a Tele, but with a Les Paul, it has more bite than I would like it to for lead tones, and if i turn down the bass, it has less than i would like it to for rhythm tones. So, essentially I am wondering whether I should keep it or not,  and I am leaning towards not. So i guess I am asking you for replacement suggestions. I am thinking about the Budda Superdrive 18, and I heard Joe used to use Buddas. Opinions? Suggestions?

Thanks, Evan

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

A number of players that use bassman reissues have some mods done to the to give them more of a marshall tone, but to get yours usable you'd probably beed an atttenuator of some sort like a Weber Mass to be able to use it at lower levels while pushing the transformers up enough so they're working properly.

The budda superdives are great amps but very different in tone than a bassman, or pretty much any fender.
I repaired one last week and the although the circuits are very well made, they do run very hot and problems can pop up.
It also depends on the tone you're after and how much headroom you want.
The budda 18 and 30 have a lot of bite but can be very bright sounding, depending on the speakers and guitar your using.
Joe used a superdrive 80 and from what I understand a superdrive 30 was blended in for more overdrive. From what I'm told he stopped because there were too many reliablity issues.  Whether that's true or not I can't say but he's using some great amps now and his tone certainly hasn't suffered.
I think it's one of those amps you should try out yourself before buying, if you can, simply because it's such a jump tonewise, from a bassman to a budda.

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

I remember the old marshalls had the same type circuit as the bassman.  With the marshall you could bridge the Normal channel and the Bright together with patch cords.  Have you tried that to see if that has improved the sound of the amp?  You could also look into a Hot Plate or maybe even replacement tubes.  There are many companys out now that offer a tube socket that lets you put in say an EL34 instead of say a 6L6 tube.  But if it was me I'd replace it with something that sings.  Grunts have their place but Joe's sounds just sing.  I can't speak for the Budda I've never had the privlege to turn one up, but I can say for a few other amps.  You might be like the last guy talking about Bassmans or Marshalls.  His problem was he like a marshall because it had 3 channels, but the bassman was just that a bassman.  check that out it might help you with your quest.

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

Just the other day I went to Washington Music Center to play all the really nice amps they possess.  Yes I am one of those guys.

I played a few Fuchs, Budda, Carr, 65 amps, Bogner, and a few others.

I loved the Budda.  They sound fantastic. They are abnormally loud. They scream.  Maybe thats why they are running hot.  I dont know.

The 65 amps had the best clean sound I've ever heard followed closly by the Carr.  I'd buy a Carr tomorrow if I had the money.  Great clean sound.  I'd just turn them up and but a good overdrive to get a solid lead sound.

If you can afford a 1000-2000 dollar amp I'd  look at Budda, or maybe ever 65 amps.  They are a bit more like a Vox than a Fender but they sound wonderfull.

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

Yeah, totally different amps. You really need to try one out in person.

I play a couple of older style Buddas (Twinmasters). But, I feel the overall impressions of these are similar to what I think of the newer SuperDrive Series Amps.

The Buddas have a tighter Bass to them. Very percussive feeling/sounding. Very compessed Mids (Probably the EL-84 Power Tubes?).  And, very loud. My 210 Combo is 18 Watts, and can hang with a lot of 40 and 50 Watt Amps.

Part of what makes a Tweed Fender what it is, is the Farty Bass. And the sweet Highs. The Budda has a different type of High End, too. More hard-edged, and focused. Where the Bassman is big sounding and warm, the Budda is aggressive and punchy.

The Budda really is more like a mix of a Vox AC, and a Hot-Rodded Marshall Plexi.

A couple of things to try with the Bassman, that will yield different Tones?
Running the Bass below 1/2 way. Maybe at 3 or 4 (Out of 10).
Cranking the Highs on the Amp, and lowering the Tone Pot on your Guitar down all the way, and slowly bringing it up, until you find a "Sweet Spot" (Probably around 3 to 6).
Swapping the first Preamp Tube (V1), for a lower gain version. Like a 12AT7, 12AU7, or 12AY7.
Swapping the Speakers. This is the single change that will probably make the most difference. Especially if the amp has those God-Awful "Jensen Re-Issue" Speakers. Yuck! A more effecient Speaker with higher power handling capacity, will probably help with the Bass Response. Maybe some of the new Patriot Series from Eminence. Or, some JBLs, or EVs.

I'd definately suggest trying some of these approaches, as opposed to just getting a new Amp. The Bassmans are great Amps. The Speaker and Tube Swaps I mentioned, are completely reversible. So, you could always put everything back to "Stock", and sell the Bassman, if they still don't do what you want.

As for the Buddas? You really need to try one for yourself. Internet Clips and descriptions won't do them justice. Great Amps! Just completely different.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

Oh man, i can't thank you guys enough for taking the time to post these detailed responses! jgalvan8804, i have heard demos of 65 amps and wanted one ever since, but since i don't own any cabs, isn't a combo more like 3000?

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

Personally I think anything played though a reissue bassman sounded like nails across a blackboard.

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

Resolved: Bought Marshall handwired 1974x! Amazing!

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

Is that one the 25 watt combo?  Either way I bet it sounds great.  I heard those combos and the blues breaker combo are very similar to a 50's Fender Twin at 50 watts of power.

Re: Budda or Bassman, or any suggestions?

They are 18 watt amps. I have a clone of them and use it much at small clubgigs.
You can crank them up with no probs of beeing to loud or so.
Grat amps.
