Topic: "Live long and prosper"

Cathy and I are both old Trekkies...ok, not the dressing up and going to conventions kind, but the kind that grew up with and simply loved Trek. So I got to wondering if there were any other space fans here.

Now when I say 'space', I don't mean everything space-related since there were some pretty poor space series too. Apart from Trek the only other (much too short-lived) show I really liked was Babylon 5.

If there's any interest we could go on to mention our personal favorite Trek series and shows. I even have a Klingon dictionary somewhere, if required. big_smile

"Live long and prosper"

Me and my husband both are trekkies and we love going to the conventions.  I love seeing all the different characters
from different shows that people dress up as.  It is one of my favorite shows of all-time.  The storylines were ahead of their time.  For a show that was only on for 3 seasons, it sure has made a huge impact

I still watch the reruns for things that I might have missed and because I just love the show so much.

Because of Star Trek, I am a better human being.  It showed me alot of philisophical questions and answers.
Below is an illustration of what I mean.

George, one of my favorite episodes is "The City on the Edge of Forever".  You may remember it as the episode that starred Joan Collins as Edith Keeler.  Here is a youtube clip of a synopsis of the episode.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU3B_5hVsns

In that episode, Kirk and Spock go back in time to find Bones.  Kirk falls in love with Joan Collins.  Spock can see Joan Collins future and discovers that she dies.  But since Kirk, Spock and Bones went back in time, they can now change the outcome of her future.  Kirk and Bones can now save her.  But if Kirk and Bones save her they not only change her live, now they change what happens in the world.  She would have formed a popular pacifist movement that would have met with Franklin Roosevelt.  The meeting would have delayed the entry of the United States into the war and allowed Nazi Germany to conquer the world.  So now Kirk must decide whether to save the woman that he loves and change the world forever or will he be able to, at that moment, let history take it's course.  Will he even be able to?

I posted the Wikipedia article of the episode and the episode from CBS.  The wikipedia article eloquently describes the episode.  The last 9 mins just shows how brilliantly the show was acted and that Moment just ripped my heart out as Spock quietly says "He knows, Doctor. He knows."

I actually have a copy of the script for that episode that Majel Barrett Roddenberry autographed because the episode meant so much to me.

So George, what are some of your favorite episodes?  Or Star Trek Series?

Re: "Live long and prosper"

I confess to being a TNG and DS9 junkie!! I was very fond of Picard, Data, Quark, Q, Sisco, Odo ...well the whole cast of characters!! I agree. The stories always had a moral. Like Aesop's Fables. And, good always defeated evil. I'm still waiting for my holodeck and replicater. Babylon5 was darker, but also a guity pleasure. Sci'Fi and Spike Tv have re-runs. Now I'm off to Ten Forward to hang with another favorite, Gynan...beam me over....Cathy

Re: "Live long and prosper"

Cathy, I liked DS9 also.  I liked that it was a spacestation.  Worf was one of my favorite characters so I enjoyed having him on DS9 also.  The original series was my favorite, followed by the first few years of Voyager.  I also really enjoyed the Star Trek movies with both crews.  My favorite was The Wrath of Kahn.  Some of those scenes in that movie were incredible.  Ricardo Montalban sure deserved an Oscar for revising his role.

Re: "Live long and prosper"

There were only two things my dad ever watched with me, boxing and Star Trek. I was immediately hooked on space. big_smile

Over the decades I've come to prefer much of TNG, DS9 and Voyager, which include all my favorite episodes, though I never got into Enterprise.

I loved Picard, Data, Worf, Quark, Klingon episodes, Cardassians, the Borg, Troy's mother (Mrs. Roddenberry), the Rules of Acquisition, wormholes, Q, the list is endless. big_smile

My alltime favorite episode is The Inner Light, the TNG episode where Picard leads an entire life on a planet while unconscious on the bridge of the Enterprise for 30 minutes.

Re: "Live long and prosper"

Saw James Bond over the weekend - but no Star Trek trailer.  Would have traded all the trailers they did show for that Star Trek one!

Re: "Live long and prosper"

What a shame this thread died....but since we've got so many new members since this was 'live' who have never seen this, I thought I'd bring it back up. I have a suspicion that a certain new(er) poster may well respond. tongue

So anyway, Cathy and I saw the new Trek movie over New Year 08/09 and both enjoyed it thoroughly. I particularly liked how the new actors exhibited certain characteristics that we recognized from the originals. Surprised they haven't started a new series with that time-line.

Live long and prosper, y'all. cool

Re: "Live long and prosper"

Old Trekkie here. I can't think of any that I liked more than others, they were all great.

San Diego being the home of ComicCon, I get to see all the hard core Trekkies come out in costume every year. Some go to amazing lengths and cost to produce the costumes. cool

Busted! lol
While clearing out the storeroom last year, I found a box of theme toys we got for the kids. I bet they may have some value to collectors these days. Not only was I a Trekkie, I infected the children as well. All other space operas as well. Beam me up, Scottie! cool
