Topic: Baseball Awards

There starting to hand out the awards for this season...Evan Longoria won in a unanimous vote for rookie of the year in the AL....Geovanny Soto, the Cubs catcher was one vote from being unanimous in the NL...The NL Cy Young award is next, I'm pulling for Tim Lincecum (S.F.Giants), he's flat out nasty to hit, and voted by his peers also....well see....thought I'd throw down some sports on the forum (I know, this is more a U.S. topic)....dont ever recall watching as much CNN on politics ever (meens everything to me right now!)...so, let the awards flow....anyone want to chime in?....Cole Hamels??

Re: Baseball Awards

11:01 AM PST..............Timmy The Kid wins the NL Cy Young award. The only bright spot in a dismal season for the SF Giants. Hope the Giants make a few moves to support Tim this coming season. I listened or watched so many games last season when he pitched brilliantly and the offense couldn't muster any runs to help him out. Congratulations to Tim Lincecum 2008 Cy Young winner.

The Bay Area media came up with a new nickname for Timmy the Kid, now known as Tim Lin"CY"cum.

Re: Baseball Awards

About Cole Hamels...I think he's great.  During the playoffs and before the World Series, I bought son#1 a signed Cole Hamels baseball and son #2 a signed photo of Cole on the mound pitching. (Christmas presents) I knew they were winning the World Series and Cole was certainly one of the stars. If I wanted to buy them in another 2 weeks, they'd be double the price!  Its just a darn shame about that historic suspended game in the World Series.  And Shred, what do you think about this, feel free to tell me if you think I'm oversensitive, its probably not personal so much as just business.  After the Phillies won the World Series, only the local copies of Sports Illustrated had the Phillies on the cover, the same issue elsewhere had a different cover. (I'm a subscriber) I can't remember who it was, but it wasn't a huge sports celebrity on the cover that warranted the Phillies being bumped. (got that cover issue info from son#2) Is this cover sports-swapping phenom. the norm? It just seems to me that the World Series is a big deal...I know we're not the Yankees or the Red Soxs...if they won they would have been on the cover.  Must come down to $$$...

Re: Baseball Awards

Wow Angela!...thats just wrong, I'm trying to remember who was on the cover after the series....yeah, I dont remember any Phillies on there...I think Tug Mcgraw was on the one in 1980?...incidently, I went to lunch at Hooters in downtown Sac yesterday...on the wall they had a picture of Steve Carlton, Darren Daulton and Garry Maddox with some of the hooter girls...I dont think Daulton and Carlton were ever on the Phillies at the same time...oh by the way, Carlton in 1972 was the greatset season I ever saw by any pitcher, he won half their total victories by himself....if only he had handled the press better..by the time he came to the Giants he had nothing left in the tank...he was forced to do interviews by the Giants, he looked like he wanted to throw up

Re: Baseball Awards

Angela, SI has been doing regional covers, sometimes up to 4 to 6 different covers that appeal to fans of different regions, for awhile now. They have to get creative to sell their product since the internet has been killing off newspapers and magazine subscriptions. Face it periodicals take time to sit down and read, which was cool for our generation, but the next generation wants it yesterday. Ahh, progress.

Re: Baseball Awards

I thought Alexei Ramirez should have given Longoria a closer race for Rookie of the Year.
Very similar stats:
Longoria 27 HR's, 85 RBI, .272 BA
Ramirez 21 HR's, 77 RBI, .290 BA (and exactly half as many k's, 122 vs 61)
I was fortunate enough to watch Ramirez all year and he was outstanding...maybe the MVP of that team. I can't believe he didn't get a single first place vote.
Hats off to Longoria though, he had a great year.

You meen Eva "whiff" Longoria"....when your slumping as bad as he did in the series you lay down a bunt or two, even if your batting cleanup....yeah, I saw some of Ramirez, he's going to be around for awhile...my man "Sweet Lou Pinella" got an award, he's my favorite manager in the bigs (probably because he hates shaving as much as me...lol)....too bad he didnt get to wear his favorite number this year....some dude has it retired with the Cubs

Re: Baseball Awards

Got the count and amount on the evening news on how many Yankee-bucks they're offering C.C., only $142,000,000.00 over 6 years. That's $23,600,000.00 a year........................good work if you can get it. I doubt the Brewers will attempt to counter that offer, ya think??????????????? Can you say $abathia.

Yeah, Lou deserved it too.
I'm sure he would have traded it for a couple of post season victories.
I think the Cubs need to shake some things up...two years in the postseason without so much as a single win.
I hate to use the choke word, but that's the only word that comes to mind.

Shred I gotta call ya on this one. Just cause C.C. is a big guy don't confuse it with his work ethic. I know a number of kids around Benicia that faced him in Little League tourneys, Babe Ruth, and high school and he intimidated all of 'em as he's always been the biggest one in the crowd. He keeps his nose outta trouble and his heart is bigger than the rest of him as proven by how much of his salary he spreads back into the community and his alma mater, Vallejo High School. I'd heard that he was building a home in SoCal which might indicate he's not interested in playing in New York, I haven't heard anything about him signing yet. The Yankees think they can get anything they want with their deep pockets, let's wait and see.
