Re: how can I get closer to his tone w/ this gear?

Dean Markley .11 to .52's  He uses a seven string set and throws away the heaviest string.

Re: how can I get closer to his tone w/ this gear?

Where did you get that info on the 7 string set? I knew he used Dean Markley 11's but wasnt sure if they are the Blue Steel or Nickel. Either way only the Nickel come as a 7 string pack but do not use 11's in the set.
My guess is he uses the 11 guage Blue Steels (MED). That is the set I have been using and I like them alot. Tone has lasted longer then the Ernie Ball powerslinkys.

yeah, the dvd is good.  I'm still working on the violin sound. It is so much harder an the LP than a strat.

I use both inputs on my marshall cab as well because the ohms line up with the two outputs on my rivera combo, and the amp is fooled into thinking its stacked.

I wish there wasn't flame bait in the freakin GEAR section...for God's sake. I hope my previous statements did not come off that way.

You can cheat and get a volume pedal. Makes the Violin sound much easier and offers more control.

That info comes from Joe Bonamassa. LTHB-7; 10-60. NickelSteel Electric. I have a set in my hand that I got from JB. He pitches the 7th one (60).

Really?! He's back to playing on 10's?  I though he really liked the 11's or is he touring so much that his calluses can't stand up to the 11's?

I can only go by what I know. I actually thought jim m had it exactly correct and then looked at the ones Joe gave me. As we all know this stuff is subject to change based on a lot of factors, but it hasn't been that long ago that Joe provided me that info.

Dang!

Yeah, I have a volume pedal and never use it. Now I need to try that.

Re: how can I get closer to his tone w/ this gear?

its just the opposite for me, i can do the volume swells pretty fast and easy with the volume on my strat, i cant really get it going at all with a volume pedal, it just doesent work for me, and i dont really care for the volume pedal in my chain either.

also Joe seems to be playing more in 4/40 regular tuning instead of dropping a half step down, might explain the string change, and dangit touring touring touring always on the road, damnit what i wouldnt give for him to come to little rock, poor people like me cant afford to go out of state for concerts lol, its effecting me mentally as a guitar player, hurts my motivation and he seems to just keep getting bigger and more distant.

Re: how can I get closer to his tone w/ this gear?

I second that about the volume pedal... I find it's much easier to play volume swells with the volume on the guitar.  Plus, the volume pedal is just one more thing affecting your tone in your signal chain... I don't like 'em...

The Tone Quest article says 11's I asked him about it and he told me he goes to 10's at times when his hands are hurting. That might be more often now. After all he is pushing thirty. Everything hurts on me now that I'm pushing 50 kinda hard. I know for sure he uses the 7 string set and throws the fat one away. All this was when he was a Strat man. Gibson's may be 10's all the time.

Those wound .020 G's are great for your open tuned slide guitars.

Well you got it from the source so I wont argue with ya. I knew he DID use 11's from the Guitar World Article a while back.
I use 11's but I am tuning flat for our singer. My hands tend to hurt when im playing to the records in standard 440 tuning.

Do you know if he is still using the Dunlop Jazz III Picks?

He's definetly still using Jazz III's- in my opinion, the best picks out there...How long have you been using 11's?  After using them for a few weeks, my hands got used to them... tried to go up to 12's then, but it was impossible... probably didn't give it enough time, though...

I have been using them for a few months. I went back & forth with 10's but since we tune down a 1/2 step the 11's felt better. I keep them on all 3 of my gtrs. (LP, Strat, Tele)

I have been trying the Jazz 3's but I keep going back to Fender X Heavys. I like the Jazz 3's but i wish they where alittle larger.
