Topic: Sonny Landreth

Sonny will be at the Coach House tonight and I'm meeting up with Libby and Steve to see the show! Libby, my dear friend, managed to win me tickets to go after I told her I was too cash strapped to attend.

I'll be posting a set list and review tonight when I get home!

Re: Sonny Landreth

Danny - what a treat to meet you and Libby & Steve!  I wish I had my s*** together 1/10th as much as you when I was your age. LOL! Now I am in the select group who knows what Libby looks like. To you others... Nyahhhh Nyahhhh! smile

Libby got us seats front and center.  I think Libs was about 6 feet from Sonny while he was playing. I was across the table so maybe 10 feet for me.

I'll let you and Libby fill in the details but the night began with Bluefish ( a house band I'm guessing) and they were pretty good. Next came on Anderson Hall, their lead guitarist Neil Morrison let some amazing riffs rip.  I'm posting a link to their myspace page - they have a link to Joe on it (how cool).  Joe if you're reading this, you may want to consider these guys as an opening act on your next swing through SoCal.  http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu … D=12668002

Then Sonny and his band came on.  He's another of my guitar gods from way back and this was the first time I had gotten to see him live.  WOW!  A mix of some new and old material but like I said I'll let the others go into the details. Sonny gets the same kind of reaction from me as Joe. I just keep shaking my head and wondering "How DOES he do that?"

Please don't blow off the show at the Coach House when Al DiMeola plays in February - he will blow you away as well!

Oh, and Cathy - you were right. Libby IS hot! wink

Re: Sonny Landreth

I was bummed that Sonny only brought a few CDs to the show; I missed out on getting one signed but I tracked down a copy of his "From the Reach" CD this morning. It will get a fair bit of listening to over the weekend!

Re: Sonny Landreth

Hey guys, I'm sorry I haven't been around to post in here, I've been up to my eye balls in stuff to do.

But onto the thread topic...

Honestly, you be surprised how much palm greasing will get you. We moved from about the 2nd best seats to the first thanks to Steve's handiwork with the dollar bills...

Bluefish was pretty cool, a little bit of odd placement next to Anderson Hall and Sonny, but good stuff nonetheless.

Anderson Hall was really solid. Some great guitar work, and the crowd has especially pumped when they went into their own rendition of Have You Ever Loved A Woman. Very very cool stuff, highly recommend seeing them both as an opener and headliner.

Now onto Sonny. One phrase comes to mind: total mastery of the instrument. On all fronts! I literally could not think for about the first 10 minutes of the show, and I'm pretty sure Libby has pictures of me jaw agape! Sonny is truly in a league of his own, and a great guy to boot! The rest of the trio can only be described as intense. I don't think I've ever been to a show where I was so intrigued by a drummer's playing as I was on Friday night. Again, total mastery of the instrument. And then there were moments when that bass was suddenly flying and you look over thinking "What the hell?" and there's Sonny's bassist attacking those strings with such intensity I've never seen in a bassist.

Just a very very hip show, guaranteed to entertain fans of any genre.

Here's the set list, titles are shortened as they were on the actual list:
Port
I-10
Stepson
Promise
Denver
Hell @ Home
Storm
Milky Way
Blue Tarp
Uberesso
Key
USSZ
All About U
Teche
Pedal

And coolly enough Sonny stuck around after the show to sign autographs and chat a bit! So I've got that signed set list on my wall right now. Sonny's really a very down to earth guy. His vernacular struck me as particularly Louisiana-y, it was really pretty cool.

And Libby! What else can I say Libby, thank you so much for an incredible night. For those of you reading I should explain, I've been in a bit of a financial ditch as of lately. I'm saving for a trip to Europe after my senior year, and with the recent cop-bike incident I really couldn't afford to go out for a night of great music. But dear Libby went and WON tickets for the show from the Coach House for ME. Truly an incredible act of kindness, thanks so much Libby.

I also got a chance to meet Tom at the show, forumly known as RICjunkie. And just to clear up any confusion about his username, I came to know that RIC stood for Rickenbacker! Cool huh? We had some interesting conversations between the three of us, Steve, Tom and I...anyway, it was great to meet you Tom, and hopefully I'll see you down here again in February for the Al Di Meola show. I wouldn't miss that show for the WORLD.

Hopefully Libby will get around to posting some of the pictures she took, there's some great stuff she shot!

Oh and before I forget, welcome to the I Know What Libby Looks Like Club Tom!

Re: Sonny Landreth

Two of those were a couple of faves "USS Zydecomobile" and "Pedal to the Metal"; both are on his "Grant Street" CD. Great live album.

Hopefully Libby can get that video of Anderson Hall doing "Have you ever loved a woman" posted up on youtube before too long. It was incredible!

Re: Sonny Landreth

Nice to see what he is playing.  I can't wait.
Thanks

Sonny is on my very short list of "don't miss" artists (which is topped by Joe).
Will catch him later on this tour when he is at Ramshead on Stage.
You are getting me psyched.
It is something to help with the realization that it is lot longer to the next time I see Joe, Then the 8 days since I saw him last.

Re: Sonny Landreth

10/24/08 - The Coach House

My first Sonny Landreth experience.  Wow.

I had been forewarned, by several friends........ "Oh my God, you are going to LOVE Sonny," "You have to WATCH his hands," and "he is THE BEST slide guitarist on the face of the planet."  Also, each time I asked if he was NICE, I was met with, "NICE?? Oh yeah!!..... Sonny is the nicest guy in the world!!"  I swear to you..... they ALL said the EXACT same things, like it was the official Sonny marketing mantra.  Hmmmm  ......   okay  ........  I certainly HOPED he was that good  ..........   I DO trust my friends, but I still wasn't SURE just WHAT I was in for.

I'm glad I wasn't sure, because I never would have been able to believe it anyway.  Really.  My first thought, and my recurring thought, OVER and OVER as I watched him was, "WHAT was THAT???!!!", followed up with "I've NEVER seen ANYTHING even closely related to THAT in my LIFE," and again, "What was THAT???!!!!!"  Sheeeeesh.  My brain could not even begin to wrap around it - the sounds, and the VISUALS were intense and so....... NEW for me.

I can't give you a technical review - a review about exactly what Sonny does that sets him apart - nor am I an experienced enough fan to compare him to other slide guitarists......... but I don't think that I have to be to KNOW that what I experienced last Friday night was the absolute PEAK and PINNACLE of slide guitar ability.

One of my friends asked me, "Did he do any of his behind the slide tricks???"  I chuckled to myself when I read that.  I don't know!!!  Like I said, I didn't have ANY idea what he was doing!!!  "WHAT WAS THAT???!!!"  I can tell you this...... I'm not sure that I've ever seen anyone have such complete independent control over his fingers.  They were doing 16 different things at any given moment.  Sometimes they worked with individual precision, and sometimes in complete harmony with the rest.  He picked, he strummed, he spanked and slapped, he slid and slipped and wrapped and snuck behind and in front of and....... well....... are you getting the picture??  His hands were ALL OVER that guitar.  Like he was giving it a full body massage!!!

Sonny's vocals are smooth and consistent.  I never heard him miss a note.  Lovely to listen to, really.  Not hard driving or gritty, as I sometimes like and NEED my vocalists to be - but, much like his guitar playing - he has tremendous command of his other "instrument", his beautiful voice.

Steve and I had the opportunity to meet JB Forum member Tom (RicJunkie) for the first time that night.  WHAT a nice guy!!  Tom has been in So. Cal. on business for a while and had asked for my recommendation for gigs in the area...... I mentioned a few things, including Sonny.... he got a ticket and then I was able to move him to our table.  And Danny, my friend Danny - well, Danny just HAD to see Sonny - I mean really, how could a young guitarist MISS an opportunity like that??  How could he NOT see Sonny??  So, Danny joined us too.  What fun we all had, visiting, talking Forum stuff (the good, the bad, and the ugly) and whiskey, and guitars, and music, and Joe, and life in general.  I have to tell you, that I turned around and looked at Danny, several times during Sonny's performance.  THAT show....the "Danny show", the LOOK on HIS face, was NEARLY as priceless as Sonny's performance.  He was ENTHRALLED.  He was ENTRANCED.  He was ASTOUNDED.  He was RAPT.  He was in HEAVEN.  How glad I was that he was able to come.  smile

BTW Tom, this was the second time we've seen the opening act, Anderson Hall.  Joe should be well aware of them because they've opened for him, right THERE at the Coach House.  Spring of ' 07, I believe.  We were there then too, and, unbeknownst to us at the time, so were Shred (Dave), his wife and their son.  It was nice to see the band again - I really like their originals, and I was able to shoot a nice video of them performing Freddie King's "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" (one of my FAVORITES).  I'll post it as soon as possible.  Unfortunately, I was asked NOT to shoot video of Sonny, and so, I can't share that VISUAL MAGIC with you.  Alas.  sad

When I met Sonny, after the show, I told him what my friends had said about him...... and that some of them are guitar players, and some not..... but that they all had one thing in common...... they are all Joe Bonamassa fans.  His face lit up and his eyes opened widely with appreciation at the mention of Joe's name and then, after thanking me, he said something like......"well then....... they WOULD know their guitar then, wouldn't they??"  Yes, they would.  They do, indeed.

All in all..... it was a great night...... in one of my favorite places, with new and not so new friends.......and Sonny Landreth.

Watching Sonny play SO brilliantly was such a UNIQUE experience that I wondered if he might be an alien living among us.  I should say that I wondered about that only UNTIL I felt him leave a few pieces of his very human soul on that stage.  He is gentle and fierce.  A wild man with incredible control.  He is one of a kind.  He is Sonny Landreth - slide guitarist extraordinaire - and, by the way, I'm happy to report, a VERY, very nice man too.

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

Re: Sonny Landreth

Such nice words Libby. No doubt about it, Sonny makes magic with his slide style. I hope the rumors of a pending DVD are true...he really needs to be seen, as well as heard, for the whole impact. And, I agree, the fact that he's such a gentle, kind man makes high praise easy. Thanks    Cathy

Re: Sonny Landreth

Here's about the best pic I got.  I hate using flash (although I guess most artists get used to it) and the ambient light wasn't great.

Great review Libby, and a great use of words too:

Re: Sonny Landreth

Can't believe that I had to go back till November to find an actual Sonny topic! roll

For shame, people. Sonny is a major artist (or should be) imho! I've been playing his Live at Jazzfest 07 non-stop for two days now - particularly getting off on I-10.

Maybe Eva or Gunter could give us a report on what they saw?

(My long rage planning is now building around Joe at the Opera in Wilmington and Sonny two days before at the Ram's Head - on April 10. cool

Exactly. I wrote a bit about his show in our America thread. And I agree with all, Danny, Tom and Libby were writing last year.(It was even the same venue.) I left the venue like after an excellent meal: satisfied and happy. He is really a master of his instrument.

But then: why isn´t he mentioned more often, as George is asking. Why Eric Clapton called him something like "the most underrated, and at the same time best guitar player"? Why he isn´t more popular?

To be clear: I know a lot of hard core SL fans, but he seems to be more the artists´artist or the expert´s artist. Obviously he doesn´t look like a rock star and he doesn´t behave like one. Which isn´t a disadvantage in the blues field which doesn´t like too much glamour and ego.

So, I don´t really know, if it´s Sonny´s decision to stay a bit hidden (he didn´t sell any t shirts), if it´s simply his character, or if maybe slide guitarists have a tendency to be introverts.

I took a picture of the set list. Eva might help me to upload it. And a souvenir is on the way.

A good question. The same sort of question like 'why does Rolling Stone ignore Joe?'. What Eric actually said (according to Wiki) was: "probably the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced."

Which is exactly what was said about Little Feat in the 70's. big_smile

I'll look forward to the picture, and to the unexpected....and to my first Sonny show next April 16th.

Re: Sonny Landreth

I've discovered that Sonny Landreth will be playing one date in the UK (and one in Minsk) in the autumn.

The UK gig is at The Relentless Garage, London, N5 1RD on Thursday 12th November. That's not a venue I know but it appears to be near Highbury and Islington station.

Not sure if I can go just yet. Anyone else? George, you popping over?

Re: Sonny Landreth

Here´s the setlist from Coach House finally -

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41675368@N02/3897373635/

He played my three favourite songs all in a row - Storm of Worry,  The Milky Way Home and Blue Tarp Blues. Sonny´s playing is fantastic and like I said in the other thread - his fingers are really scary. Each of them has its own life... lol
The way he played reminded me of a classical player rather than of a Bluesrock player - and he does all these little tricks and gets these weird noises out of his guitar ... he might really be a musician´s musician, but that´s not a bad thing to be.

Re: Sonny Landreth

Very cool, that's a very similar set to the one I saw! When I saw him it was

Port
I-10
Stepson
Promise
Denver
Hell @ Home
Storm
Milky Way
Blue Tarp
Uberesso
Key
USSZ
All About You
Teche
Pedal

So he played Groovy Goddess, World Away at your show, and he didn't play Key.

Very cool!
