Re: The BDS-opinion thread

Heres a random fact I noticed.

In JB Hifi (one of Australia's biggest music retailers) they don't stock any Joe Bonamassa but they do have Back Door Slam. Their management must be doing some good work to get them so widely distributed. Plus they also had the opportunity to play on Jimmy Kimmel live.

Re: The BDS-opinion thread

That's true Jess, but BDS has to answer to their mgt. and Joe calls his own shots. Nothing like being your own boss. I can relate as I've been a self employed re-model contractor for many years now and I can't imagine towing somebody else's company line any more.

Yeah good point. Just a shame Joe's CDs aren't more widely available in some countries.

Re: The BDS-opinion thread

First of all, thank you Eva, for starting this thread and giving everybody the opportunity to express their opinions of BDS... good, bad, or indifferent.  While I would never like to see a thread started here specifically to TRASH a band, I welcome one asking for honest opinions from all.  Especially on a band that gets so many raving reviews and has generally stirred up so much excitement here... I mean after a while, you gotta wonder how many dissenters are out there who don't bother speaking up, either because they feel outnumbered or because it's not polite to offer an unsolicited negative opinion.  I'm interested, because I'll be seeing BDS live for the first time in a couple weeks.  So I've enjoyed reading ALL the opinions and observations here, good and bad, because they were ALL well supported with reasons for feeling that way.  And not to be a brown-noser, but I especially thought both our mods' posts were unbiased, fair, and balanced, like they'd given BDS an honest chance.  Not sure where all the bickering came from, but I'm aware some posts were deleted, so I apparently missed something, which is just fine by me, lol. roll

I'll be bumping this thread after I see the band for MYSELF... which by the way I plan to do with an open mind and no pre-conceived notions... I mean I do expect I'll enjoy them since I generally enjoy the genre, but let's see if they knock my socks off or speak to my soul.  So I'll be reporting back here after sometime after Nov 5th... now let's try not to get this thread closed between now and then, kiddies!  wink tongue

Re: The BDS-opinion thread

Vik, I know your comments are well intentioned, but could you not have let this topic disappear and saved your comments til you actually see them live? I think whether we like BDs or not, this subject has been done to death! As you can see this subject has not had a post for several days.

BDS are not currently on tour, so lets give them a break. Lets talk about what we agree on, ie Joe, rather than what divides us...

Re: The BDS-opinion thread

Allright I've been watching this thread for awhile...thought I'd see where it goes and throw in my 2 cents...

First off the band are a bunch of high school friends who really are stunned at whats happening....humble to the point of being uncomfortable at times....that being said, the're really just grinning from ear to ear , especially when they recognize a face from a previous show....they are extrmemly gratefull for ALL the support that JBs forum friends have given them, told to me by Davy himself

The thing there going to have to understand is the pressure and scrutiny of being in the spotlight when you have so many cds being bought and brought along the big stage and opening for some heavy hitters in rocknroll....people are going to scrutinize your band...and there can be some strong valid opinions of their music abilities as well as downright jealousy too...I meen these kids are rising at an amazing rate of popularity...and they still dont understand all the fuss!

My own opinion is I let my ears trell me what works for me...I listen to some music that has people shake their heads in disbelief..."you dont look like someone who would have a compilation of Mowtown to Bluegrass"....my wifes words, but I do....my point is I enjoy BDS immensely and look forward to their next show and hang out with them and their manager Evan...if their music doesnt move you and you think their overated thats fine by me, to each their own....I'll keep on truckin and will continue to find music thats moves my soul as much as BDS....thats all I got to say for now...one last word goes out to Davy Adam and Ross...."it goes with the territory, soon or later....if you get interviewed for ANY topic or artist, try and step back a minute people are hanging on your every word at times"

Ok, I'll give my opinion for the last and final time on this post.

Back Door Slam are a good, young band and do not deserve the criticism they have warranted on this topic. They also probably do not deserve all the adulation that has been heaped upon them on this forum at this point in their careers. I think that's a pretty balanced viewpoint.

I feel if we are going to criticise other artists, we should at least leave it to other genres or at least mature established acts.

Yes Phil, I was hoping we would not have any more participation. If you wish to go on then that's everyone's personal choice. The reasons I feel the way I do are as follows:

There has been bad blood generated on this topic, therefore I felt it was best to leave it alone. When you talk about participation, how may people have been put off posting on this forum due to the aggravation that has been shown under this topic. This kind of debate can split people in an bad way and also put people off returning to the forum. That's an important issue.  Would Joe want to read this kind of stuff on his forum?

I hope you understand I did not mean any offense Vik, I just thought we'd put this debate behind us... Enuff from me

Re: The BDS-opinion thread

I don't like the criticism of such a young band - the blues is struggling in the U.S. -
I am grateful for any new decent blues band - we better get out and support all
of them or pretty soon there will be none - unless we travel to Europe.

Re: The BDS-opinion thread

What the heck.
Because Eva has asked my opinion of Back Door Slam,
Here it is:

Thier music does not touch me on an emotional level.
I haven't heard any tunes that I find catchy.
From what I've seen on youtube(never seen them live) they look boring.

Thanks for askin,

Re: The BDS-opinion thread

I like 'em and I wish them success.  Davy sings his butt off.  They are in for the ride of their life if they sign anything with anybody that relinquishes their control.

He plays OK for a young guitarist.  I don't love a strat most of the time.  I've looked at their DVD.  It's good.  I'm old and jaded and somewhat of a grump.  If they do not light some kinda fire (smoking originals?) they will fade away like so many.

It's a wicked biz.  I know.

Sorry guys, but I just had to bring up this topic, because I felt like there are some people who want to say their opinion about BDS and don´t do it on the regular threads ... and obviously there WAS a need to talk about it. wink

I´m a huge BDS Fan myself (for the good old reason that their music really touches me), but I think the ones who don´t like them have made valid points too - most of the time it was a good discussion and so I don´t regret having posted that thread. But as you say: I think pretty much all is said by now (exept for Vik´s impression of the upcoming show) and we can lay this topic to rest for the time being.

Thanks for your opinions! smile
