Which do you prefer - Hendrix Experience or Band Of Gypsies ?
Band of Gypsies. Buddy Miles and Billy Cox had a pocket.
I'd say Band Of Gypsies (or Gypsys). Buddy Miles was awesome.
Tough one, although Band is absolutely awesome, my fave live recording is still Live at Winterland which of course was still the Experience.....
I liked them both though I thought Billy was a better bass player.
that's a tough call. ill say band of gypsies but experience almost gets the edge because there is so much more material from them.
band of gypsys= the funk.
This may be because I'm the first Brit to comment on here, but I'd say the Experience.
If you are asked to name classic songs by Jimi Hendrix, I think most would be Experience songs, such as Foxy Lady, Purple Haze, Stone Free, Manic Depression, Red House, Voodoo Chile, Wind Cries Mary, Crosstown Traffic, If 6 was 9.
Certainly I feel that is the case as a British music fan, maybe this is becuase these songs were recorded over here, but the Band Of Gypsies material seems to have a lesser profile, excellent though it is...
Experience - but it may be a decsion more in terms of biography than of musical quality. The appearance of "Are you experienced" was like a big bang in our musical world - and it was connected with Experience. And as Greenose is writing, all these archetypical Hendrix songs are Experience songs.

I like Band Of Gypsies- super funky. It would have been cool if Jimi had played more with that line up.
The Experience, hands down. Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell were the perfect compliment to Hendrix. Mitchell had a jazz like feel to his drums that Miles never had. Buddy could've never handled the drums in for example, "Third Stone From The Sun". Not that he was a bad drummer, but a lot of times he was too heavy handed with Hendrix, That being said, I do like the 'Band Of Gypsies' album, but it pales against what Jimi, Mitch and Noel put down.
This video slays me every time, and is one of my favorite cover versions ever :

Mitch is ragin'. They came out to kill and kill they did. Imagine being there at Monterey and this is the first glimpse you've ever had of the Jimi Hendrix Experience...
I have to say Experience aswell
I do like band of gypsies aswell but hmm....don't really like Jimi in that funky way as much as a like him with Experience . Plus Mitch Mitchell is probably my favorite drummoer EVER!
Btw I dont see why people pushes Noel down...he wasnt that bad, was he?
Mitch Mitchell was a superb drummer and as Keith said had a Jazz feel I believe thats cause he was a Jazz Drummer before Experience..
Though I still dont rate Noel Redding as a good bassist (he was a good guitar player anyhow) he just always seemed inaudiable live and in the recordings I dont think it was always him playing.
Mitch and Hendrix made a real good team imo they was The Experience :x
Little trivia for y'all...when it came down to picking the drummer for The Experience, the last two to make the cut were Mitch Mitchell and Aynsley Dunbar, (who later would go on to play with everyone from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Frank Zappa, Journey, Jeff Beck, Whitesnake, Jefferson Starship and UFO among others). When Jimi couldn't decide between the two, the decision was made via a flip of the coin, and Mitchell then became the drummer.
I'd have to say 50/50... Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox on Bass..!!! You'd get the best of both then anyway!
The Rainbow Bridge album has a great picture if my memory is correct with Mitchell/Cox & Jimi ...: )
I like them both-alot, and for different reasons and for the same reason.....
The same reason = Jimi the man himself. The player for the ages.
The Experiance for the songs
Band of gypsies for the jam
Given the choice to experiance (pun intended) one of the two live......
Hands Down......
Band of Gypsies
