Topic: Walter Trout - UK tour has begun

Well last night I had the pleasure of watching Walter Trout, one of Britain's best new blues guitarists and meeting one (or two) forum members!

This was the second time I had seen Walter, but the first time in my home city. The venue was The Picture House which has just opened in the city and this was just the third gig there! (actually it was a venue in the 1970s and 1980, both Queen and AC/DC has played there in a previous life).

After entering with my friend, we met up with forum member trdb (Tom) just on and got near to the front to see a performance from the Oli Brown Band. Oli is such a confident performer and in the four months since I last saw him I could see he and his band have grown tighter as a unit. It is clear the band have been practicising heavily and a lot of work has been done on developing the vocal harmonies between Oli, Fred and Simon. This was particularly shown on the song Complicated. Other songs from Oli's Open Road album he played included Psycho and New Groove. Despite having released his debut album in June, Oli had three new songs in his set, including an excellent solo blues called Stone Cold, and a blues'd up version of gangster song No Dignity. The audience were very appreciative of Oli and he was surrounded by new fans who were keen to buy his album after his performance. We may have lost Back Door Slam to the USA , but the Oli Brown Band have now reaches that level of performance! Later I was told Walter has invited Oli to play on his forthcoming European tour, which is a fantastic opportunity for the band, and a great gesture by Walter who is keen to promote artists of a similar genre.

Water and has band came onto the stage to large applause and started a very heavy version of Not Fade Away. Being the first date of the tour Water seem energised and was constantly moving around the stage playing the fantastic beefy riffs he is known for. He even cheekily played the tune of Loch Lomond during the solo of the opening song, acknowledging his return to Scotland. Following a slow blues number that I did not recognise he then launches into Gimme Back My Wig, which also allows keyboardist Sammy to play an extended solo. He played several songs of his new album including Welcome To The Human Race, Alfred Bluesrock and Gone Too Long, but no songs from Full Circle. The only thing I cannot understand is the need for the roadie guy to come out to play three chord acoustics during A Matter of the Heart and All My Life. Sammy was allowed to sing his own song No Good Woman, which Walter dedicated to Sarah Palin (a popular choice with the crowd). Water finished off the set with Tribute to Muddy Waters/Serves Me Right To Suffer.  He returned even louder for an encore of The Outsider and Going Down, and leaving the stage he advised he was going to eat haggis!

I missed speaking to Walter after the show, as I returned my female companion to her car, but then met someone on the bus who confirmed he had been out to sign albums after the show. Walter is a legend and on fine form, so I’d urge you to go and catch him on tour, and make sure you arrive early enough to see Oli Brown too! smile

Nice review, Duncan. Wish I'd been there with you.

I'd love to hear some of the tracks off the new album played live. I think it's an awesome album. I've not heard Walter do Going Down; I bet that was a stormer. Saw Jeff Beck do it once and that was pretty good but I imagine Walter gave it the works.

Nice to hear Oli's getting recognition. I'll have to check him out myself very soon.

Good report Duncan. I certainly enjoyed that. I'm planning on going to see Walter at Holmfirth next Thursday. Thanks for the report!

Re: Walter Trout - UK tour has begun

I seen Walter here in the Detroit area about a month and a half ago and he was stunning! I was right up front in this small night club and he totally blew me away!! The sound that came out of that guitar and amp was awesome. He was only using his Strat and his Mesa Mark all wood head. After the show I met him and was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He told me he had a chance to see Roy Buchanan play in his earlier days and called Roy "freightening" the way he played. Anyways, hope you all over in in the UK enjoy Walt. I did and I hope he comes back!

Err, George, that's not the full sentence, ha ha

Actually the slow blues song Oli played was called Love Gone Cold. It really is an excellent solo blues song, makes me lok forward to album number two already. If you film one song Tripsy, please make it that one! smile He played it after Open Road.

Duncan

It was good to meet you at last and thanks for the great review. The set was refreshing with so much new material from 'The Outsider' and the new drummer ("stolen from Edgar Winter") added some bite.

In case anyone missed it, Walter was in session on the Bob Harris show on BBC Radio 2. An excellent interview and accoustic set.

You can catch the show on the BBC 'Listen Again' facility.

Hi Tom

Yes the gig was really good. I was a little surprised there was nothing from Full Circle, but I enjoyed all the songs he did play, so can't complain. I think the new drummer did make a difference, pretty powerful and left handed. Wish I'd been able to stay around a little bit longer and meet Walter, but my friend had to dash.
Was great to see you Tom, thanks ever so much for the disc, it will keep me busy for a while!

Here's my flickr address with photos from the gig and also some from Oli Brown's gig in Berwick the following night:

Re: Walter Trout - UK tour has begun

What a great night we had at the Picturedrome in Holmfirth!
Oli and the band only played for half an hour but what a great performance from the guys. Their usual drummer was unable to make the gig so Spoons, who plays with Aynsley Lister's band filled in very nicely. What a great character. During his drum solo he hurled the sticks behind him and played with his hands....great stuff. Fred too gave a great solo on his beautiful six string bass. Oli joked that he plays a six string bass because he wants to be a guitarist!
Oli was looking very sharp and played and sang with passion. They played four sonds from the Open Road album and two new ones, Love Gone Cold was fantastic Duncan.
The half hour passed all too quickly and the crowd would definitely have lapped up another half an hour for sure.
After a break and a bit of gear shifting Walter took to the stage. He played in his usual blistering 90mph style stuff from the new album, the Outsider and some oldies too including Life in The Jungle and Working Overtime which he recorded with Jeff Healey for the Full Circle cd.
Then to everyone's surprise and delight he invited Oli on stage for a jam. Thay really had some fun trading licks until Walter let go with a great bit of violining and Oli held up his hands in submission. At the end of the number Walter gave Oli a hug and said 'How about that young man, this music's in fine hands for the future'. I couldn't agree more.
There was also some very fine singing from Sammy Avila on one number which he wrote and also from Andrew Elt, Walter's road manager.
For an encore he played a beautiful slow number, which made a nice change, and Going Down.
All in all a very entertaining night.

I've been told there is an interview with Walter Trout and some tracks at 6pm on Planet Rock tonight.

Those of you with eagle eyes will notice that is in the hour before Joe's show comes on, so set your ears for a blues rock bonanza! smile
