Topic: Zappa Plays Zappa in Harrisburg PA 10/28

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA (Dweezil Zappa's tribute show to his father)
Whitaker Center, Harrisburg, PA
Tuesday, October 28th
Show at 7:30
Tickets $35 & $45
All Ages

Believe it or not, this one is more for my husband's benefit than mine, but I'm looking forward to it anyway.  And then my son begged to go too because he's into Zappa and all things guitar, so all 3 of us are going.  Plus 4 of his friends jumped on board too.  I got everyone's tickets last week.  This one is only like 15 minutes away from me, as we live just across the river from Harrisburg.  (I'm dreaming of the day JB makes it back to the Whitaker!)

Has anyone here seen Zappa Plays Zappa before?  I'd like to hear some opinions.  I've heard he plays more of the serious music than the comical stuff, so I might get a little bored, as I'm pretty much only into the comical stuff... Stinkfoot (and a bunch of others off Apostrophe), Dinah-Moe Humm, Montana, etc.  Although I do love Peaches En Regalia and a few others.  There's SO much I don't know, as the catalog is quite extensive.

So anyway, is anyone else here going to this Harrisburg show?  If so, and you'd like to meet up, let me know!  By the way, there are still some tickets left as of right now, but they seem to be going fast.

They came here I think 2 years ago and there was Steve Vai too playing with Zappa's son...I didn't go there but some of my friends did and they said it was amazing!!!

Re: Zappa Plays Zappa in Harrisburg PA 10/28

Hi Vik,

I never saw them live but they are aweson. About a year ago Cathysiler  told me about this band and told me they were great and if I had the chance to see them I had to go. She sent me that beautiful Zappa plays Zappa T-shirt ,I wear on several pictures on the forum!

The band did only one show in Tilburg in Holland last year but unfortunately I was prevent from going, midweeks , I had to work. She said they just had a double DVD out and I bought it immediately and it is BRILLIANT!! The band plays very tight and very good soundquality too. Napoleon Murphy Brock still has that great voice, he had in the FZ band.
JBr, you were right,  Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio ,old Zappa members are on some songs too. Don't know if they play the tour now.
.
Both, Cathy and I are real Frank Zappafans and like his music very much, but I must say I know Dweezil played guitar, but I didn't know he is that good.

one advice: Buy and enjoy!! You won't regret it, if you do, I'll pay you the money back!!!!!!!!!

Hi Vik,
I saw the Zappa plays Zappa tour two years ago in Manchester.
If you enjoy brilliant musicianship and something a little out of the ordinary then you'll have a great time.
I eventually bought the dvd too, awesome!
Hope you enjoy the show

Re: Zappa Plays Zappa in Harrisburg PA 10/28

Well so far, both here and elsewhere, I've heard nothing but good things about this band.  The only negative (at least in my eyes) has been hearing that they don't really play the comical stuff I like.  But either way, I'm very much looking forward to this show, even more now than when I first bought the tickets.

So then, I take it nobody else here will be at this 10/28 Harrisburg show?  I don't recall seeing many (if any) Central PA posters on here, so maybe not.  Well, if so, and you want to meet up and say hi, let me know!

Hi Vic..This was one of the best shows I saw in the last year. I too was a BIG Zappa fan. I didn't know what to expect. Dweezil does his Dad proud. I esp. love when he plays along with Frank on a big screen. You're going to have an amazing musical experience. Can't wait to hear how you like it.     Cathy

FOLLOW-UP/SHORT REVIEW:

What a fun show, and what a talented group of musicians!  Whoever said (and I don't think it was anyone here) that they don't play funny stuff musta been at a whole different kind of show than we were at, because the majority of this show was comical.  I was so happy for my husband that he got his "Billy the Mountain"... one that I never really could stand, lol... but I must say it certainly was entertaining seeing it played live and watching the band have a ball with it for like a half hour!  I got some of my stuff from Apostrophe, although not "Stinkfoot" which is my favorite (and maybe my first introduction to Zappa, via the Dr. Demento Show, lol).  I really thought we'd get "Montana", especially after seeing it on the track listings of the DVDs and CDs on the merch table, but unfortunately they didn't play it.  We did get some other stuff from Overnight Sensation though, like "Camarillo Brillo" and "Zomby Woof".  Other songs of the night included "Chumba's Revenge", "Joe's Garage", "Wet T-Shirt Nite", and "The Torture Never Stops".

Dweezil certainly does his Dad's music justice... my son and his friends thought he might even be BETTER than Dad!  ALL the musicians were top-notch, and we were especially happy to see Ray White on vocals... he's in the 1985 concert video "Does Humor Belong In Music?", and incidentally the only one Dweezil introduced all night too.  Ray's voice is still in top condition, and he looks like he has so much fun up there... they ALL do actually.  What a fun, bizzare, awesome evening of exceptional music... we all enjoyed it!  A sold out show, by the way.

And just a side note for blues fans:  The concert video I mentioned above, "Does Humor Belong In Music?" is GREAT FUN, despite the fact that Frank hardly plays any guitar in it, lol... at least not until the closing song, a killer cover of "Whipping Post"... for blues fans, it's worth buying for that song alone!

Re: Zappa Plays Zappa in Harrisburg PA 10/28

So glad you had a wonderful family musical experience. "Billy the Mountain"..What a great story..his wife Ethel is a tree growing out of his side..they take a vacation and while they are gone, Billy gets drafted, so Studebaker Hawk goes looking for him....Only a mind like Frank's could have come up with that!! See ya next week!      Cathy

Re: Zappa Plays Zappa in Harrisburg PA 10/28

Hi Vik,

Glad you enjoyed the show so much. They were in Holland last year but I couldn't go. Hope they come back soon because their DVD is awesome.
I have the Does Humor Belong in Music myself and I like it, but like you said; not enough Zappa guitarplaying.
Song I like best is Bobby Brown, just brilliant..... an hour on the tower of power.....
Like Cathy said before: only Frank could say it like this!
P.s: did or do you buy the DVD Zappa plays Zappa? Remember my offer to pay your money back if you don't like it?????????????

No, I'm afraid I couldn't afford it, after the cost of 3 tickets, plus the many other concerts I've had on my schedule (and more being added every day! roll).  Besides, I figured if I'm going to buy it, I can probably find it cheaper elsewhere.  Now that IS a good Christmas gift idea for my husband (he basically wore out "Does Humor Belong In Music?" and "200 Motels", lol)... I'll keep that one in mind. wink
