Is anyone here going to this show?  I can't say that I'm a huge Satriani fan, but for some reason I want to go.  Probably mainly for my son's sake... I'm taking him.  I don't quite have our tickets yet, but I just called the box office and was told there are still a good many left.  My brother and some of his friends are going too.  Anyone here want to meet up?

By the way, I believe the Rams Head emails I get have this show listed as being on Mon, Oct 20th, but it's actually Wed, Oct 22nd.  What's on their site is correct.

I'll bet some Baltimore radio station is giving aways tix too.  But I'm up here near Harrisburg PA, about 1 1/2 hours from Baltimore, so I have no hope of free tix.  Which is unfortunate, since I'm pretty damn poor... and by taking my son, I'm doubling my expense too, ugh. tongue  I probably wouldn't even be bothering with this show if it weren't for my son... he plays guitar, and I like to expose him to all different guitar styles, and give him the chance to experience some of the greats live while he has the chance.  Because musicians die off, retire, lose abilities, etc... not to mention that my son will be on his own before we know it (he's a senior now) and once that happens I doubt many concert tickets will be in his budget, lol.

But I must say, I'm looking forward to seeing Satriani play live myself, just once.  My brother is a pretty big fan, and I've been hearing him rave for years.  The only Satriani CD I own is Flying In a Blue Dream, which I like, but don't play much... the guitar is good, but I think the lack of lyrics bores me.

I'm also curious to see if Mountain can still rock... hope so, but I'm not counting on it! roll

So, is anybody here doing this show on Wed night?  Just curious.  As of last week there were still plenty of tickets left.  I'll be there with my son, my brother, and some of my brother's friends... looking forward to it. smile

I'll be seeing Mountain with Satriani next month, and I can tell you for a fact that Mountain do indeed still rock. In fact, I'm going more to see Leslie West than Satriani. Not that Joe isn't great, but Leslie West is still a monster guitarist who still has his chops. Word is that Mountain is very nearly stealing the show on this tour.

Here's a few clips I found from shows this month :

FOLLOW-UP/SHORT REVIEW:

Well Keith, you were right... Mountain can still ROCK!  I wouldn't necessarily say they "stole the show" from Satriani, but they were definitely equally strong acts.  The band was very tight, and Leslie West's guitar playing was amazing... now I see what all the fuss is about him... wow!  Glad my son had the chance to see him, being a guitarist and all.  And just an aside... Leslie reminds me a bit of comedian Ron White (the Tater Salad dude), in his stature, his face, and his "bourbon & cigarettes" voice.  Even my brother said on the way home that he kept reminding him of somebody, especially when he spoke, and I said yeah Ron White, and he yells "yeah that's it!"  Corky Laing was quite a character too, the goofy old dude... I've never seen anyone have such a hard time holding onto a drumstick in my life, lol... I mean lots of times he threw them on purpose, but other times they were just flying out of his hands in all directions, lol... he had a ready supply next to him though, and never missed a beat... actually a very good drummer.  Both these guys had real stage presence.

While I'm not a huge fan of Satriani's style, I was completely awestruck by his guitar skills.  He's way more than a shredder... there is emotion and magic in the music he creates... probably what makes him the best at what he does.  The whole time I was asking myself WHY don't I get into this genre more, and then it hit me, it's not just he lack of lyrics like I always thought, it's because it's missing the BLUES!  But I thoroughly enjoyed his show, and I'm glad I got to see him at least once, and that my son got to see him.  My brother said it was the best Satriani show he's ever been to... he was smiling ear to ear the whole time.

But my absolute favorite part of the whole night was when Joe brought Leslie out during his encore (after already playing 2 encore songs and me thinking the show was over), and (after presenting Leslie with a cake for his birthday) they proceeded to close out the show with two blues numbers... in fact the same two blues songs as in the vids Keith posted... some blues jam and Going Down... it was great!  I'm actually kinda glad YouTube was down for maintainence when I was reading Keith's post, or I would've kinda spoiled the surprise, lol... of course the vids are nothing like seeing it live anyway.

Anyway, I can wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone... WOW!  big_smile

Joe does have a bluesy album.  It's a self titled album called "Joe Satriani", probably about the 5th or 6th studio album he did.  You should check out that one and "Flying in a Blue Dream".

I already have Flying In a Blue Dream, in fact it's the only Satch I own... I very much enjoy the title song (so glad he played it in Baltimore!) and I acknowledge the whole CD is great guitar-wise, but I think I get bored with the lack of lyrics, so I don't listen to it much, especially in recent years.  I think I might pop it in tomorrow though, when I'm home alone and can jack up the volume... I'm in a lyricless mood anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up on the bluesy Satch album... I'll definitely make it a point to check that out.  I'm sure my brother can hook me up... he owns every Satch album, except for maybe Flying In a Blue Dream, and that was only because he was convinced I'd end up giving him MINE, which I assured him I'd never do, so maybe after all these years he's bought that one too. smile

Re: Joe Satriani & Mountain in Baltimore 10/22

If you want the ultimate Satch experience pick up his "Live in San Francisco" DVD.  Absolutely amazing !  But the self titled CD is one you'll probably enjoy.  It's funny because most of my friends can't listen to my Satch, Vai, or other instrument albums for the same reason.  They always end up saying, "Does this dude ever sing man?"  I just laugh and tell them, "Sometimes words can get in the way.", and put something else on.

To answer your question Jeff, I'm in Bethel Park.  Been here just about a year, just moved from the Omaha area.
We'll have to hook up at the next Joe show !

P.S.  To Jeff and all others in the Pittsburgh area !  Gary Hoey is playing his Christmas show again this year at RPM's in Bridgeville.  We went last year and it was a great way to kick of the Holiday Season !  Small place with a small crowd, very cool venue for the show !  Met Gary and got all of my CD liners autographed.

Ho Ho Hoey !
