MTV was born of faux new wave bands such as A-HA, Flock Of Seagulls and ABC, Culture Club, Adam Ant and later on by the hair metal bands such as Def Leppard, Ratt etc, as well as ZZTop. Therefore, according to this reasoning, The Flock Of Seagulls, Boy George and Def Leppard are directly responsible for the greater success of Bonnie Raitt.  So thusly, The Flock Of Seagulls should be getting their call to the RRHOF any year now. wink

Keith,

I would agree with you if the Flock had any career past the initial bright burning of the early days of MTV.  But the fact is they did not.  Neither did any of the other bands that you mentioned, save for a few.

If you look at the cultural impact of Madonna over the decades you see that she is in fact a force in the planetary culture.  Her very existence and the work that has come from it has changed the world.

While you might not like it, there simply is no denying that we live in a post madonna world.  We live in a world forever changed by the success of Madonna.

The same can be said of RUN DMC.  As the Kings of Hip Hop they were responsbile for bringing this multibillion dollar musical and cultural force out of the small time in NYC, and into the arenas around the country.  They were the first ambassadors of this music, save for a smaller wave of shows by the likes of Kurtis Blow.

The street that modern music lives on is a wide street, but the biggest houses are occupied by the likes of Madonna and hip hop pioneers RUN DMC.

I think your choosing to reject them in a way reflects more about our desire to put music in boxes.  Yet the conflict comes when people try to put something YOU CARE FOR in a box, like Bonamassa or SRV.  Then suddenly you want to see the world as one big place, but when someone wants to put Madonna in the rock world you resist.

Yet when some want to keep Joe in the blues box, you resist, or when someone wants to move Joe in to the rock world, you resist.

It is this resistance that is more telling I think.

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

Stevie is very influential in the world or rock and roll. Just looking at bands that aren't exactly blues, here are bands/guitarists that have laid compliments at Stevie's feet: Metallica's Kirk Hammet, John Mayer, Cross Canadian Ragweed, the dude from Slayer, Robert Randolph, Kid Rock, The Red Hot Chili Peppers (well, Frusciante anyway), Ritchie Sambora of Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan. He's definitely had his impact. He was named number 70 in VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Rock And Roll, number 7 in Rolling Stone's 100 Best Guitar Players. Not to mention, that 18 years after his death, he still makes regular appearances on nearly every single major guitar magazine. Stevie is for sure one of the most guitarists in rock's history. And the guitar is rock's official instrument. There is no question. Had he lived to this day, I would bet good money that he would be as iconic as both Hendrix and Clapton. There is no question. If there is one millionth of an ounce of blues in your playing, Stevie's there.

Besides, how many famous rock and roll musicians have their own statue?

Just for kicks I decided to check the list of inductees into the HOF...Take a look for yourselves...I think they use "Rock and Roll" in a very broad sense. There's artists from all genres. I'm not a purist in any sense and am glad to see musicians given props.....Dino...I have a different opinion than you...The argument could go on ad nauseum.... Cathy

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

Bob Dylan was influenced by SRV?  Compared to Dylan SRV is a one trick pony.

Same for Stevie Wonder.

As far as statues go...Les Paul DOES NOT have a statue.

Shaquille O'Neal does

so that really is not a good guide

I think on the list of top 100, Jack White came in ahead of SRV

So, let us not put too much into a list that seeks to affirm your belief.

No....not influenced by....think highly of Stevie. "Laid compliments at his feet."

Deep Purple? Without them they'd be no Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Metallica in its current form and so many more...

Run DMC and Madonna are not rock n roll. And wasn't it an Aerosmith song they got famous with!

Dino, you're what I call a wind up merchant. Instead of sitting posting on here, get back to your school books, with Madonna on your Ipod!

It's so diluted it really should just be called The Music Hall of Fame now.

Dino

You say the Wilson sisters didnt do anything before the MTV era?>? LOL!! Heart had thier second coming when MTV hit the scene.

SRV?? Dont tell me that SRV didnt have any influence on other musicians. The man died what? 18 years ago and he still can be heard through many musicians. Ill agree with you that he took Kings tone and ran with it but it was SRV that turned it into a more upbeat style of blues. It was his image that people still try to copy to this day. Have you ever seen SRV live?

I cant claim that SRV should be in the Hall, but he should definetly be concidered sometime down the road. For you to say he had no influence on rock is dumb. I seen him 4 times and he truely blew me away everytime I did. I can tell you that if SRV hadnt come along, blues could have sank to nothing. It was he who revitalized the blues. Blue is the roots to rock and roll as gospel was to the blues. With that said you cant just sweep it under the carpet.

SRV was a legend and with that alone he will be concidered one day for the Hall.

Do you work for the Hall?? LOL!

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

Wow, very interesting discussion here - you´re really good at bringing up those kinds of topics Dino ... big_smile

I think the basic question here is: What is the minimum definition of "Rock´n´Roll" ? If this thing was called the "World of showbusiness Hall of Fame", I wouldn´t have a single doubt that Madonna would belong there, but for me she has as much to do with Rock´n´Roll as a duck has with a pig.

My basic defintion for "Rock´n´Roll" would probably be: a) a song- and rhythm structure that is based on the Blues in some kind of way, b) a band or a single person actually playing instruments  and c) this certain kind of "Rock´n´Roll" feeling that you can´t describe wink.

That may be a poor definition, but I just refuse to call something "Rock´n´Roll" that´s all about show instead of music. Madonna´s music is bubblegum - SHE is the star, her music is exchangable ... it´s all about the show and the (sometimes embarrassing) dancing and shocking and scandal-provoking.

I mean - I really don´t want to put music in boxes as you called it Dino, but I think we could at least agree that there´s Blues, Jazz, Rock´n´Roll, Pop, Techno and Hip Hop ... that´s actually not too much to ask. And I really don´t see why someone who nearly EMBODIES Popmusic should find a place in the Rock´n´Roll Hall of Fame. Really doesn´t make any sense to me.

What´s your definition of Rock´n´Roll Dino?!

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

The best ROCK N ROLL has always been sleazy, raucous, obnoxious, sexual and defiant. I think Madonna fits that description.

Rebels rebel, critics write about it.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

I love the duck and pig analogy, Eva! big_smile

Look, this is, in effect, a list put together by a group of people. Anybody can make lists about anything, and then find others to (largely) agree or (largely) disagree with their choice(s). I happen to think this list suffers from being mis-named. This is not a rock n' roll list; this is a list of people (by no means all musicians) who have, in the opinion of those compiling the list (i.e. deciding who gets inducted), made a significant contribution to the development of contemporary music over the last half century or so.

There is no such thing as objectivity when discussing taste, which is what this boils down to. We all look at this list, or possible inductees, with our own prejudices - which is perfectly reasonable and understandable. Personally, I think that any such list that omits, for example, Little Feat, but includes the likes of the Bee Gees, Grandmaster Flash, Louis Jordan and (shudder) Madonna, is a crock. tongue
