Topic: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

Jeff Beck, Metallica,The Stooges, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Run D.M.C., War and Bobby Womack are this year's nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Of the nine, five will be inducted into the Cleveland museum at a ceremony scheduled for April 4 at Public Hall in Cleveland.

And yet, still no : Deep Purple, Alice Cooper (The original band), Grand Funk Railroad (Fat chance given their loathing from Rolling Stone Magazine back in the 70's), Jethro Tull, Rush or Yes. But, all is well as Madonna is in the hall. One would've thought the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan would have been a shoo in the first time, but I guess Stevie isn't deemed worthy enough compared to Run D.M.C. wink

Travesty. Stevie deserved it. Oh well. At least they're looking at Jeff Beck.

That´s pretty ridiculous really .... what is considered Rock´n´Roll?!

I always thought Mrs Madonna was the "Queen of Pop" rather than the Queen of Rock ....

Deep Purple should definitely be there, they were as influential in their day as Sabbath and Zeppelin. There's few bands that ever had such a collection of talented members together. I read an interview with Kirk Hammett of Metallica recently in which he stated how much he had learned from Blackmore's playing.
Stevie too, I'm sure I'd find a few more if I checked the list.

The RNRHOF is such a joke these days, I couldn't care less anymore.  It means nothing.

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

Given the fact that I think the Stooges recorded the most significant record in my music listening career, it is right and just that they are there.

Deep Purple.  I am serious music person, and I do not think they belong there.  They are hardly influential given the spectrum of metal music or even hard rock.  They are not even in the top five bands to come out of that region in that genre.

SRV, it is completely arguable.  I have read stuff here holding him up as a a blues man extrordinaire, but is he?  Or is it a really Texas-ified version of Hendrix washed through a Freddie King wash bucket?  If you listen to SRV talk about it, he talk incessently about the Freddie King shuffle being the basis for 90% of what he does.

Madonna belongs there because she is a watershed, she changed music for both women and the genre.

RUN DMC are the Beatles and the Stones combined of the hip hop generation.  They are the kings of the culture that defines youth culture today.  More hip hop and r and b is sold than rock and blues and all other genres comined.

I do not think Stevie Ray Vaughan is as musically significant as RUN DMC.  First, less records.  Second, shorter career.  Third, less of an impact.  While blues guys wanna be cool and hold him up, it is really Hendrix they are holding up.

That is just because your definition is too narrow to include the changes in music.  Its a scary world in 2008 I suppose.

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

Dino..you know I like you and respect your opinions..but..I can't hold my tongue on this.... SRV is not as significant to ROCK AND ROLL as DMC or Madonna!! Now you're showing your age. As Joe has said before..all musicians borrow sounds/riffs from previous players. I bet even your man Scott Holt copied somebody's sound in the process of finding his own.

Madonna didn't affect R&R, she is a POP icon..On behalf of Bonnie Raitt and the Wilson sisters, I take offense at the idea that she changed ANYTHING for the women of R&R.

OK I'm calm now..You really are good at pushing buttons young man.......Cathy

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

Most people that I've talked to about this feel that the RNRHOF's definition is too broad...but hey, those wise folk are calling the shots.

And naw...2008 isn't scary.  2001 was. wink

Re: Jeff Beck, Metallica, The Stooges Nominated For Rock Hall 2009

Cathy,

You are simply wrong.  With respect, you are wrong.

Let us be cleaer about Bonnie  Raitt, he record sales more than tripled AFTER the birth of MTV and her appearance on it.

MTV is born of Madonna.

Thusly, Madonna by degree is directly responsible for the greater success of Bonnie Raitt.

The Wilson sisters were playing 5000 seaters prior to MTV, and MTV propelled them **** did the blond sisters good looks even further than they had been before.

My man Scott is irrelevant.  To bring up my friend is a personal attack, on both me and Scott.  And it is insulting.  And in defense, his first band...oh yeah it was BUDDY GUYS BAND.  That is where he found his sound.

SRV is not as signficant to rock and roll as a whole as RUN DMC or Madonna.  There is no other way to say that.  If I ask ten musicians, guitar players today who was the most significant force, I am more likely to NOT get SRV.

Read Rolling Stone, look at SPIN, when they ask young musicians who their influences are...I have not read anyone say SRV in a while.  Not even John Mayer.  ANd he was sucking the SRV teet for a while there.

Madonna directly affected rock and roll of today.  Look at the pagentry of Panic at the Disco, directly comes out of the blonde ambition tour, and its work with Versace.

Look at the embracing of fashion by rock and roll, directly comes from Madonna and her being vocal about that.  Now you have people like Lenny Kravitz, and countless others being open about being fashion whores while being rock stars.

I am sorry.  You are simply wrong about the influence of SRV versus the influence of RUN DMC and Madonna.

Would any of them name Madonna or Run DMC?

Dino, either a) you're trying to rile people up here, or b) you really aren't aware of the influence these two bands have had throughout the years, not to mention the millions of albums sold. If it's the first, I'm not playing, and if the latter, I would say go back and do thy own research -I can't  be expected to do ALL the work here. wink
