Topic: Yankee Stadium....

I'm not a Yankee fan but watching the last out at Yankee Stadium almost brought me to tears. Yankee fans... are you mad at George Steinbrener for tearing down arguably the most iconic stadium of all time to make an underground parking garage??

I'm mad...going down with that building are soooo many memories for me.  Makes no sense to me, it really doesn't.  Why?

I didn't watch the game...just couldn't.  sad

Re: Yankee Stadium....

Just read a news story -- you could have gotten a ticket to the last game @ the stadium from StubHub for about $12,000....

You're right, that does bring a tear to my eye.

Re: Yankee Stadium....

Well yeah if we're talking prices then I say that's baloney. I wish I could have afforded to bring my children to a game there this year, but that wasn't happening.

The question posed was about tearing down a piece of history.  My dad took me to games there as a little girl. He didn't even like baseball but did it for me.  My dad is gone now, and so too shall be Yankee Stadium. That's sad to me.  Memories for so many, players and fans.

For the record, I hate Steinbrenner, always have. tongue

Re: Yankee Stadium....

Don't forget this happened before in the Big Apple. Not only did they raise two historic stadiums, Ebbetts Field and the Polo Grounds, but they let two of NYC's beloved teams slip away too, the Giants and those other BUMS. The Yankee's used to share the Polo Grounds with the Giants till Giants fabled mgr. John McGraw gave them the boot when they started drawing more fans when the Bambino joined the team. Isn't anybody gonna weep for Shea Stadium? After all the Beatles played Shea not the house that Ruth built. As a child my memories of pro sports began at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, I have fond memories, but I don't know anybody that actually misses that structural dump itself. Time marches on, in every market fans have seen their old stadiums raised for newer retro-style parks, I'm surprised that it took New York this long to get with the trend. Hopefully only the apocalypse will raise Wrigley Field. Too bad the Yanks didn't make the post season for a grander send off, how much do you think a game 7 World Series ticket would have fetched?

Nah, not mad at Steinbrenner for tearing it down. From what I read there was no way to really preserve the history of Yankee Stadium and update it; so that left them with little reasonable choice. Not many ballparks have a sliver of Yankee Stadium's history.
