Looks like he's going for the Peter Green mod, but I've never heard him use it before - maybe its just for the look or something.

I can only assume that he did it to give the neck pu a more edgy sound.
If the pole pieces are closer to the bridge the more twangier gets the sound.
I was thinking to do this on my Les too as I find the neck pu slightly mellow sounding.

I think he said he tried to switch the pu (like Peter Green) but didn't realize that you need to rewire the pu too, so it's not completely like the Peter Green mod, he just left because it looks good.
