All screwin' around aside best live bass solo I have ever seen was Billy Sheehan back in  the Talas days. Unbeleivable. 2nd was Stanley Clarke with the New Barbarians (anyone remember them?) and 3rd was Geddy Lee the numerous times I saw Rush in the '70's.

Billy Sheehan...dig it!

Also Chris Squire and John Entwhistle (RIP big guy).

The best I've ever heard was the late great Jaco Pastorius.

Yeah ,Jaco was hot,no argument but Jaco was even better when he wasn't playing 'like Jaco' at a zillion notes to the bar - he was great in Weather Report on tracks like - 'A Remark You Made' and the the tracks penned by others.

Not so keen on his own compositions. That's just me though- he is very well regarded by Bass Players in general.

Re: Best Bass Player.............Other Than Cadbury??????

Seriously , my vote would go to Carmine Rojas.

Listen carefully to 'So Many Roads' and hear how his Bass playing holds it all together, the way he meaningfully fills in between the root notes. The root notes play the main rhythm but there are inner rhythms that are going on in there as he fills in.

If you've never noticed it when you heard the track - then he has done the bassmans job - provided the low notes and woven the drums and bass seamlessly into a perfect backdrop for Joe.

Ummmm

John Entwistle anybody?

No matter how well you know someone, you can only ever guess.  How can you ever really know somebody else? It takes more than a lifetime just to get to know yourself.  Nobody knows the meaning of loneliness.  - Van Morrison

John Entwistle. If it weren't for him, none of the subsequent players would've had a forum to shine. Most likely the first "lead bass" player in the history of rock,(Check out his work on the Who's first album released in 1965 for confirmation.Example : The instrumental from that album, "The Ox" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L7XiZlalvs). No one was doing that kind of stuff at the time. If his work doesn't shine as much now it's due to the fact that so many after imitated him. But John did it without any of the posturing which was to come, and even in his latter years he still had it. And without even breaking a sweat. The Who lost any teeth that they had left when he died. Even Pino Palladino, the Who's current bassist shows respect by not even trying to replicate Entwistle's parts live :

From The Royal Albert Hall, 2000, bass solo from 5:15

That and Paul McCartney doesn't get his due as a bassist either.

Re: Best Bass Player.............Other Than Cadbury??????

We mustn't forget Jack Bruce , he started out on an upright acoustic bass in his Jazz days and had some formal training on cello - I think he was at his most inventive with Cream - playing Spoonful with Clapton.

Jack spars with Clapton around the lead in the guitar solos and actually takes the lead in some parts with Clapton playing back the phrases.(Best recording, for me. - Wheels Of Fire)

This was very heady stuff in 1968 and probably partly explains why all those 50 somethings were prepared to shell out big bucks to see these guys together at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005 with £70 tickets changing hands for £1,700.

Re: Best Bass Player.............Other Than Cadbury??????

carmine sorry to say is nothing spectacular on bass.  i mean do you really think he is one of the best or have you just never been to another concert?  jaco is the best from vids i've seen, and eric czar is my favorite going right now and one of the best i am aware of.  his lines were better than carmine on everything ive heard him play, there is a very very noticeable difference.  not to say carmine is bad, he does his job, but doesnt go beyond.  the thing is, czar did the job backing up joe, and did it better, honestly played rock bass better than almost anyone ive ever seen, and then did way more.  have you seen the stuff he has up on youtube or any of his bass solos?  it is unreal.  i'd go so far to say he has reached the level of mastery on bass that joe has on guitar.

victor wooten is amazing too if he has yet to be said.
