A comprehensive new anthology that covers the entire career of troubled guitar genius, Peter Green is due to be released on 27 October.

Simply titled The Anthology, the 4CD, 64 track collection starts with Peter Green’s work with John Mayall in the early 60s and runs chronologically via Fleetwood Mac all the way through to Green’s recent work with the Splinter Group.

This will be a very good one, many people in the states don't know that Fleetwood Mac was a great blues band with Peter Green before Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined.  "Black Magic Woman" and "Green Manalishi" were originally done by Fleetwood Mac before Santana and Judas Priest made them famous.  "If You Be My Baby" is definitely a tune to check out also.  Gary Moore did a whole album of Peter Green material that has some great music on it as well.

I could sit here and look at that list all day, just marveling at what an incredible collection of blues tunes it is.....but I'd probably end up droolin' all over myself.....

I would LOVE to hear that the Splinter Group was touring again.....anywhere!  I have a few clips of them, and even though Greeny doesn't have the same power that he once had, he still has a spark.....and that's more than a lot of musicians could ever dream of having.....

My, my, this is very tempting - trouble is I've got 60% of these tracks , I'll have to check out the price.Don't get me started on how good Greeny and Jeremy Spencer were , we've had that thread.

I might just get the 'In the Skies' (album) on cd - I had the vinyl when it came out but never
replaced it.

Simply one of the greatest blues rock guitarists of all time. Great selection on this one, and it would be an excellent introduction to Green's work. The only problem I have with the Splinter Group is that it too soon became more Nigel Watson's Splinter Group featuring Peter Green. Watson may be a capable enough player, but I'd rather hear anything from Peter on a bad night than Nigel at his best.

Geoff, that’s interesting to read that he came into your shop (I’m hoping it’s a guitar shop). Having read Martin Celmin’s book about Peter you can only grasp at some of the poor treatment and ordeals he has been through.
I’m way too young to have seen him in his prime, but I did see the Splinter Group six years apart. Like you Keith I did feel that there was not enough of Peter in it, and too much of Nigel. The second time he was touring with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers and I think everyone was hoping for Peter to go on stage with Mayall. Sadly I hear he never wanted to. There was so much good feeling from the audience to Peter both times and it was a pleasure just to see him up there playing.
The Splinter Group fell apart and the reasons have not been disclosed. Shame that Peter never really had a band with musicians as talented as himself.
The anthology does look very tempting. I’ve never heard Evil Woman Blues and there are some other early rarities, and I see there are several Robert Johnson tracks and guest stars on the Splinter Group numbers so they sound worth hearing.

Yep, we sell guitars. Peter seemed very relaxed but also very humble. It was hard to picture the younger version compared to Peter as he is now. It was an absolute pleasure to see him though. I took the liberty of patting him on the shoulder and saying 'good to see you' as he left.

The exact details haven't been disclosed, but other than scouring public records, the word is it had to do with financial matters.

Looks interesting...Even though I have all of the early & solo stuff I'd still like to get it --just because of the coolness with any reissue.

Peter,Hendrix, Zeppelin etc I keep buying the reissues...just for that extra track or two !

Thanks for the insight, Keith.....I'm always happy to pick up another piece or two to the puzzle of what I consider one of the most interesting, and sad, stories in the history of music.....

I had known about the bizarre treatment he had received early on, even reading that he was given doses of LSD as a "cure" for the damage the LSD did in the first place.....talk about pretzel logic.  If I remember correctly, he was quoted as saying that, but there have been a lot of things written about him, and I'm sure some have been embellished.  Even so, that whole period had to have been such a living hell for him that it's amazing he's able to function at all, let alone be able to play a guitar again.

I would love to see him perform again, but that doesn't seem likely.  I did see him in, I think, 1970, in what I believe was his rejoining FM when Jeremy Spencer quit mid-tour.  I didn't know it at the time, but learned the particulars of that years later.  That's a memory that will stay with me forever.....

Yes, there were a lot of factors which led to Peter's downfall, but I think that left to his own devices he would've come out of it relatively unscathed. The legends regarding him wanting to give away all his money etc. at the time were embellished by management (Peter states recently that he only wanted to give away SOME of it, not all), as a way to get him institutionalized, which did him the most harm. Green's situation echoes the path that Texas legend Roky Erickson went down for many decades in regards to the medications, ECT treatments given that were not necessary courtesy of "well meaning" individuals who didn't have either one of their best interests at heart. Peter appears to be quite lucid, and doing as well as could be. One has to consider  he's now 61, and subject to life's ailments , and Erickson, after finally getting off the medications, appears to be quite well also, after several decades of bizarre behavior in both cases. Somewhat similar is the case of Johnny Winter as well, who seems to be recovering after many years of being kept doped up by his former manager.

I followed Peter Green and after what he has been through It's really hard to say how he would have come out. 
All I can tell you is the medical field has to take care of immediate needs.  He clearly was in a bad mental state and the medical professionals have to take care of getting him out of his worst state.  I am not saying that there procedures were right, but it is important people who have troubles get the right medications to help them.  If that is what they need.  He was already messed up before he got to therapy so I am just saying that is something that shouldn't be overlooked.  Bad Therapy would contribute also.

Its interesting to see that Mick Fleetwood now has formed a new blues band. Jeremy Spencer is finally free of the church of God. I'd love them to get back together with Peter Green for a few dates and would probably enjoy it. I'm not sure about McVie, he's said he prefers to remember the old Peter, but I suppose Bob Brunning could play bass for them.

The news on Danny Kirwin is not too clear, last I heard he was in a homeless shelter in London, which really is tragic.

That's cool that they're doing this Box Set! I really loved/love his playing.

    And I know that they can't put every tune on there. But, I REALLY think that they need the live "Jumping At Shadows" from "Live At The Boston Tea Party"!

    That is a transcendant piece of work, in my opinion. The TONE is incredible. The Phrasing and Touch? WHEW!!!!!

    Anyway, that's my .02!

    On a side note: The new band I'm joining is wanting to cover "Oh Well"! That'll be a blast!
