Topic: Category 5 Amps

I checked out the Category 5 website and unless I missed something there's nothing on there that tells you how to get one.  So, I have no idea where or how to listen to one or order one.
I have checked out a lot of the modded Marshall's out there and the JB Category 5 seems to be what I'm looking for to compliment my Fuchs ODS.

Anyone have any info??  Price??

Thanks

Re: Category 5 Amps

Just e-mail Don R. over there on the website or look for him over here on this site.  He is a good guy and will answer any questions and get you rolling on one fast.

Re: Category 5 Amps

Thanks Ben
I did but haven't heard back from him.

Of all the Category 5 Amps, the JB seems to be the best fit for what I need.  I'd like to try/hear one first somehow.

Does anyone know of any other good modded Marshall plexi's out there?  I checked out Naylor...not quite what I'm looking for.  Any other suggestions?

Re: Category 5 Amps

Danny
Check out a Voodoo Amps V-Plex if your looking for classic Marshall Plexi tone.

Re: Category 5 Amps

Their Tempest is pretty much a 50 watt version of Joe's amp on the dirt channel, and a JTM45 on the other channel (if your looking for a little less power). If you need the 100, get the JB model.

Also check out Germino. He has tons on clips on his website. http://www.germinoamps.com/

Re: Category 5 Amps

I've tried the Voodoo V-plex and was not impressed.  There is so many amp builders out there its not even funny.  Fargen makes a bunch of great amps.  They have a JCM800 and a 50 watt plexi clone I believe.  I haven't tried the plexi one, but the 800 was very nice.  What about Ceria Tone, I think they make a clone as well.  Anybody every try one?

I too am dying to play a Cat 5, but it looks like you have to be around where their shop is to try one out, unless they hit up the amp shows or something.

Re: Category 5 Amps

Hello Danny,

You should have email from me by now.  We were tied up in Telluride this last week backlining the Blues and Brews festival there.  We delivered a one off custom amp for Warren Hanyes along with two 4 x 12's, and sent a couple of demo amps out with Derek Trucks(an Andrew and a Tempest).  We'll wait and see how those do.  Warren Played his new amp at the solo gig and a 4 x 12 on the main Stage show.  We should have a couple of Demo tempest amps available soon, so anyone who needs to hear one first can drop me a line.  We have a 14 day no questions asked full return policy, so there is no risk in getting one, whether you hear it or not.  If we can determine the amp is what your looking for, then there is really no reason not to get one.

Re: Category 5 Amps

Don
I did get your email and thank you for responding.  I'll contact you about hooking up.  I'd love to hear the tonal differences between the JB and the Tempest.
Like I said, I'm using a Fuchs ODS 50 and I'm looking for something to compliment that.  I know you recommended a Tempest but what are the tonal differences?  I'm sure others on here would like to know, too.

Also, most on here know I'm pretty anal about cables:)  After much research I've decided to endorse Accusound.  Simply amazing cables.  Now, I'm reading a lot about how a power cable effects the sound....what's your take on it?  Steve at Accusound feels it will definately make a difference upgrading power cables but so far, Accusound hasn't developed one yet. ..any thoughts?

Thanks again
DG

Thanks for the Voodoo link.  I never heard of them before.  After checking them out, all the sound clips were a little heavy for me...great sound but not what I'm into.  What caught my ear was their mod work.  Did you check out some of the mod samples?  I actually have an old ADA MP-1 pre amp  in storage somewhere.  After hearing their mod samples I'm thinking of getting it modded and putting it back in my rack:)

Also, the Boogie mods are amazing sounding.  I contacted them regarding modding my old DC5...might be an option although I'm looking more for EL34 / 6L6 combination

Thanks again for the info.

Re: Category 5 Amps

Hey DannyG - I use a Mesa Lonestar with EL34's paired with my ODS50 and it is amazing.  I never played a DC-5 but as far as the Mesa/Fuchs pairing that I'm using it is defintetly working smile.  Also I like the Evidence Audio Cables, and that guy swears over the Power Cable making a difference.  He sells them, but for like and arm and a leg lol.  I've never experimented with that though.

No problem. I'm sure you'll be happy with their work.

Re: Category 5 Amps

Hello Danny,

The JB 50 has the traditional marshall setup, and two positions in the midboost-so if your after the 4 hole style- non-master volume amp the JB 50 is your amp.  The Tempest has more features, two separately voiced channels,  plus reverb and powerscaling.  The tones are very similar.

Let me know,

Don

Re: Category 5 Amps

On power cables, I don't know how much a difference they make, the issue is delivering the power to the amp-if you have oversized trannies that can easily delivery the current(as in our designs) I don't think there will be much of a difference.  If the amp is starved for current, then a better pipe from the wall to the amp would help it do the best it can.

Re: Category 5 Amps

Thanks Don.  I'd love to hear the Tempest.  It sounds like what I'm looking for.  Stock Marshalls..except for the Jubilee's have always sounded a little harsh to me...probably the EL34's.  So, the Tempest might be the ticket.  I'll call you if that's ok?

Ben.  I checked Evidence Audio and their power cables.  I really doubt that I'll hear $259 for a 5 ft cable difference in tone smile  That's even harsh for me.  Voodoo Amps has one for around $35 that supposed to make a difference.  I'll start there.

I love this website.  I've met more helpful and knowledgable people on here than any other site.  Don from Cat 5, Steve from Accusound, Corby from OceanEFX and Trace from Voodoo amps (although I don't think he's a forum member...I just met him through here) Alan (I think that's his name from Carol Ann...sorry if it's not) Ijust want to say thanks to all the forum members....this is a great community!!
