Do you mean Stanley Clarke?
How about one of my favorites live - Eric Czar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Geddy Lee from Rush is pretty outstanding
The best I've ever heard was the late great Jaco Pastorius.

err yes I did bleh how about Leo Lyons Im sure to be corrected again lol kinda like Mr Geezer Butler Black Sabbath 8 stringer with that Cry Baby CRAZY!
All screwin' around aside best live bass solo I have ever seen was Billy Sheehan back in the Talas days. Unbeleivable. 2nd was Stanley Clarke with the New Barbarians (anyone remember them?) and 3rd was Geddy Lee the numerous times I saw Rush in the '70's.
I still haven't found a bass I like better than Eric Czar. The bass solo he did in Don't Burn Down that Bridge is the reason that I initially started listening to Joe. I love it and still play it on the ANDY Live CD or DVD for anyone who listen! If anyone is still interested in Eric's work - check out his myspace page. He has some interesting tunes there.
PS I do really like Flea and Burton too.
I was thinking the same thing, but didnt think many people would even remember how good he is. Ever see him live ? when he played here in Cleveland a couple of years ago people were actually afraid he was gonna give himself a heart attack or something cause of the pace he was going at.

Got to love our old friend Eric Czar. However, my vote goes to Mark King, bass player and lead singer of Level 42. He is by far the best bass player I've seen live, and has got the quickest hands I've seen. I know it isn't just about the speed, and Mark King can do tone and tuneful as well as speed and slap!! Just throwing my 2 cents in there.....
Oh and of course Andy Fraser from Free.....shame on me........tight personified!
I like Pedro Arevalo very much.
All the ones mentioned before are outsanding but Pedro is quit new to me. Saw him live with Dickey Betts and Devon Allman.
Very good and nice watching to play.
Andre wittebroek
John Paul Jones
Charles Mingus
The thing with Eric Czar that might have gone unnoticed to some is that past his speed and tecnique there was yet something else very important - he had a sort of very gifted second sense of knowing just what to play at just the right time to best showcase Joe's guitar . How many times did I see him back it way down and just gently pat those strings, almost caressing them ever so very softly, just the perfect touch. Many many otherwise gifted bass players just dont get with this and put in way too intricate bass lines that end up distracting from the guitarist rather than framing and showcasing him. There's certainly a time for a bassist to rip but there's also times when they need to back off and this was part of the brilliance that was Eric Czar.

What you just wrote gives people a deeper sense and appreciation of Eric Czar. Also of other bass players.
Thanks for this wonderful description of Eric's bass playing
I'll add a few to the already great list. Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten and Les Claypool
I also liked seeing Andy Fraser listed above.
And someone close to my heart is Verdine White, he always gets a shoutout from me.
And my best wishes go out to former Sacramento King and Jazz bassist Wayman Tisdale who has a smile that lights up the world and a personality and givingness to match.
