Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

Well, I've just seen a report on todays first Dutch gold medal, the lad who won the 10 km swimming early this morning, van der Weijden - this is real lump in the throat stuff and also explains how the Dutch ladies managed to squeak past the US in water-polo.

Van Der Weijden had lymphatic leukemia in 2001. He is the survivor of a bone marrow transplant and four chemo sessions!!!!! And now an Olympic champion - deep, deep respect for his achievement!!!

The Dutch water polo ladies watched his race and went as mad as everyone else when he produced an end spurt to surge from third to first in the last 200 meters or so. After their win, they said that he was their big inspiration.

What a fantastic story! cool

Hi Jeff,
I didn't see the interview, but I do know that Kobe lived in Italy for awhile and speaks Italian fluently.  He attended a very elite public high school, better than many private schools, 1/2 mile from where I use to work...the real estate in that area is some of the most expensive and exclusive on the east coast and the cars in the high school parking lot...wow...lots of old money, (railroad money) the area is known as "The Main Line" of Philly.  I met a girl he went to the prom with. He's a great talent, he should be proud to be American...my kids think he's abandoned his Philly roots, his dad played for the 76ers... I don't follow the NBA as much as college and I guess his wife proved money can buy you love roll...

Did anybody check out Kobie?  My son and I sat their with our mouths on the floor not because of his performance, which one comes to expect...but his interview with Collinsworth was unexpected by me.

He speaks several languages and stated quite clearly when Chris asked him (baitingly) "...is that really cool, nowadays to claim pride in America...is it cool to be American in this day and age?..."

Kobie never even blinked!  "IT IS TO ME."  that's what he said.  I said to my #2 "I'll take back half of what I said about him last year."
Sean said "...he just raised the bar for every young baller in the country, whatever color they are."

Yup.

I know the Main Line & City Line Ave.  I lived in Balwynne Park in the early 70s for a summer that I had money.  Played a gig in the old Tower Theatre (Upper Darby?).  Some of the Main Line kids came slumming there to see us.  Met a Bryn Mawr girl one night.  Never seen anything like her before.  Let's hear it for higher education!

Kobie had such a bad rep for awhile...He just suprised me.  He appears to have learned from his mistakes.  So many males never really grow up.  It was a nice touch...for me.

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

Hey Michael..Did you notice "Lightning" had #5 on for that race!! I thought of you!

Shred, I thought it was poor judgment to carry on like that prior to the ribbon in the 1st round. But, I thought it was due to him being a 21 y/o who knows he's good. He was MUCH better in the final and ran full out.

And BJJ..I went to many a show at the Toer "back in the day"..Then I went to one of the last shows there before the remodel. It was Eric Johnson and it was wicked good!! But it was sad to have it literally falling down around us.  Now, get back to buikding that ark!!! Cathy

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

I'm trippin' on watching Men's Team Handball this FRi. morning. I've never witnessed this game before, hell I've never even heard of it. Is it a predominantly Euro sport? Is there an American team? It strikes me as a game that could have been invented in the basement of a college frat house during a keg party. Playing goalie is not an enviable position from what I'm seein'. Maybe if they let soccer players use their hands I wouldn't fall asleep when I watch it.

Patty-Shawn is one of my favorite Olympic atheletes...she is so bubbly and exuberant...it must be an Iowa thing. smile smile smile

Jeff and Cathy- I grew up about a mile from the Tower Theater in the Beverly Hills section, heading further from Philly...saw movies there as a kid and then concerts as a teen and more recently saw Bonnie there.  The most stand out concert I saw there was David Bowie during the Ziggy Stardust tour...I will never forget that red hair and the leopard outfit he changed into at one point during the show...it was a trip and Bowie was an electrifying entertainer! Todd Runtgren, Jim Croce, Tina Fey and I all went to the same high school.  The area has really declined, real estate hasn't held its value and I was really saddened when I drove by my old house the last time I went to the Tower, just a total bummer how a neighborhood could change. My parent's house was an old stone French Normandy with a turret...everyone used to say I lived in a castle. big_smile

Back to Kobe...his parents named him after a type of meat popular in Japan!  The Chinese think Kobe is King, so says the cover of the newspaper!

Yes Kobe Beef & Steaks!  I lived the rest of the time in W. Philly (Spruce Street) in a very rough neighborhood or in Powellton Village where the terrible trio used to live together.

I watched Misty and Kerry with great interest...no not because of those itty bitty shorts...but cause they're gold medal volley ballers just like Dahlhauser (sp) & Rogers.

My favorite daughter is the only true freshman in the high school to make the JV volleyball team.  There are Jr & Sr girls on that team that just missed Varsity and wanted to play, so there they are.

I think I'll have a sale:

Hi Donna,
I'm not sure if this was just from a local review or where I saw it, but one review I read on Robert's recent musical endeavors...the headline was Beauty and the Beast, referring to him and Alison Krauss touring together.  ( I personally thought that was a little harsh, but then I'm not in the media.)

Oh Angela, yes that IS a little harsh!  But it did make me laugh.  Alison IS a beauty, but Robert is no beast!  There's a life lived in that face!  And that hair!  He must have a Samson complex!  But oh, what a crush I have on that man!  (shut up, SRV!) tongue

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

Donna, you are not the first woman to comment on loving a rocker's face with some hard lines...I still laugh at one of the Clapton's fans description of how Keith Richards is gorgeous in her book, the more lines the better.  Off topic from the Olympics, BUT when I saw this ad in a magazine that featured all the lines in Keith Richards face as a positive, I LMAO!!!  As ironic as it is, it's brilliant since Keith is a cat w/ nine lives & they tied it in with the endurance of their luggage & Keith's longevity against the odds. No way, would they ever feature a woman who has NOT aged gracefully in the same way, but that's another story... this photo is kinda' small, but in a full page ad, it really makes an impression!    http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2008/03/ … _loui.html

Back to the Olympics, I don't root for Duke in college basketball, but think coach Mike (sp?) is a class act, even before he won the Olympics.  I didn't follow how a college basketball coach was chosen over an NBA coach, but it worked...and last round didn't go as well for team USA.  Attitude adjustment was just what was needed & a true team effort.

btw.....that woman damn near took my breath away.  She nailed that tune.....

I'll refrain from commenting on Jimmy Page.....other than to say that in The Firm's video, "Satisfaction Guaranteed", Jimmy Page shoulda been tendin' bar and Les Paul shoulda been playin' guitar.....
