Topic: Flamenco Blues Experience

Some time ago I saw Vargas Blues Band. They played solid Blues rock with a Latin bias. Sometimes Javier Vargas sounded very much like Carlos Santana in whose band he used to play and who seems to appreciate him very much (comparing Vargas with a rainbow containing all the colours). The real think I saw in the second half of the evening when a flamenco band and a (woman)flamenco singer appeared on stage. It was a very fascinating combination and it sounded very organic - as if it´s the most natural thing to play blues in a flamenco way and flamenco the bluesy way.
It was a great evening and I was waiting for this flamenco-blues mixture taking a bigger part in his CDs. Now "Flamenco Blues Experience" is out and some songs have the flamenco bias.
It doesn´t come up to the live experience, but I thinks it´s a must for all blues fans with a liking of Spanish music.

In one of the non-flamenco songs Devon Allman does the vocals.

Hi Gunter, you may like these kids...their debut album last year floored me!, it comes with a DVD also...I believe they played in the Superbowl last year, but I missed there performance...as good as Rodrigo is, the girl Gabriela blows him away in my opinion...if you search their musical backgroung, you will shake your head in amazement

Yes, the video is brilliant - Eva had to download it because here on the countryside you get only a slow, slow internet. I´ll try to get the CD.

Gunter,

If you like that flamenco style and great finger picking I'm sure you've heard Ottmar Liebert and also here is some Peppino D'Agostino solo and with his cohort in the Kings of Strings Stef Burns. Stef and Peppino are friends of mine from here in Benicia. Besides their solo careers Stef also plays in Huey Lewis and the News when he's not in Italy playing for Italian pop star Vasco Rossi.

Peppino   www.youtube.com/watch?v=brmG6f2BMyw

I'm sure Eva will dig the Beatle medley by Stef & Peppino

                                                                                                      Enjoy,

John,

Ottmar I know, for Peppino I´m still waiting for Eva´s  download. ( As I was telling above, my internet is very slow...) If we go further to North Africa and Arabia there are wonderful oud players. Sometimes they have a strong connection with Andalusian music - for example Anouar Brahem, Le Voyage de Sahar or Thimar ( with JOhn Surman and Dave Holland) which is more jazzy. My other oud favourite is Rabih Abou-Khalil, a Munich-based Lebanese who has done a lot of good CDs with excellent jazz musicians.

When Peppino's, Stef's, and my kids were grade school age they would play a fundraiser show each school year to raise money to stock the library at our kids school. Sadly Mills Elementary closed due to budget cut backs.
