Topic: Theremin

Some people have been wondering about the theremin, its an instrument that was invented I believe back in the 1920s. It is a box with an antenna sticking out of it
that senses the movement of your hand and you play it by moving your hand up and down and closer or further away from the antenna.
The Zeppelin tribute band Zoso uses one, check out this vid.

Re: Theremin

That thing is WILD! It does have a somewhat magician-like air to it. I can't believe I've never seen anyone else use it in all these years...

Probably would go well on something like "Pain & Sorrow". Or a siren type sound on "Sloe Gin" (sorry, I'm obsessed with that siren).

On the flip-side, I can see that if it was over-used, it would be a little annoying (lucky for us, Joe has a good feel for stuff like that).

Anyway...something fun to toss in the shows...Thanks JB.

And thanks for the info Bob smile

Re: Theremin

Here's another little gem to further expand our knowledge of the Theremin:

Also, and I need a little help with this........ in addition to using the Theremin during Spike Driver Blues, I am just POSITIVE that Joe made use of it during a second song as well.  Hmmmm..... somewhere closer to the end of the show........ darn...... I just can't remember.....  ANYBODY????

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

I wasn't there, but I am going to take a wild guess and say Just Got Paid.  Just seems like it might fit in when Joe goes into the "head-trippy" stuff.  wink  Patty

Patty is correct! Definitely "Just Got Paid".

Re: Theremin

I have to agree with Sketch that if overused or used by the wrong person it could possibly be quite irritating.
With that said though, my imagination was going crazy thinking about how this device would sound plugged into various peddals. Theremin through a wah wah etc.
Or how about tuning several of them slightly different from one another, putting the antennas all in a row and then playing this like a giant air harp.

Re: Theremin

Theremin...........builds strong bodies 12 different ways...........and it will strip that old waxy build up on your kitchen floor!!!!!!!! Works best with trippy head stuff. LOL!

Re: Theremin

Joe used it on Sloe Gin as well...

Re: Theremin

When we saw Joe at Toad's the other night Joe used it on Spike Driver Blues and in Just Got Paid.  The funny part was my son, who only knew what it was because I had told him about it (and he's the guitar player, electronics, and engineering dude - go figure - see Libby, you really can learn a lot on this forum!) said as soon as he saw it -"bet ya fifty bucks that's gonna get used on Just Got Paid."  Needless to say I was not taking that bet!

Joe really seemed to be enjoying the heck out of that thing.  He had a big grin on his face a couple of times when he was using it.

What I find kind of neat is that this was invented so long ago.  How do people come up with stuff like this?

Cool stuff.

Re: Theremin

I remember seeing Montrose supporting Status Quo at Newcastle City Hall, and Ronnie Montrose used a theremin on a couple of numbers (Space Station #9 was one).

Also, John Otway uses one in his shows

Re: Theremin

I saw Jimmy Page use one back in the '75 tour/Dazed&confused. Awesome with whatever echo effect he used!

Re: Theremin

Hey all:

I had looked for this exact discussion on the Equipment area, asked the question there and Joe himself answered it about 5 minutes later.  Thanks Jane for pointing this discussion out to me.

I must say, it was really neat in action.

Re: Theremin

There is a CD release of an album, I think by a chap called Dr Samuel J Hoffman. Its a whole album of Theramin music and whilst not something you would put on to bring in a New Year it is an interesting curio.
