SUNDAY RESULTS.....

Jason Lisak (the Captain of the American swimming team)  is my new hero! What an exciting men's 4x100 relay!! The French talked alot of smack prior to this race...final legs were WAY ahead of world record pace, and then Jason ran down the French world champion to out touch for GOLD! For Michael Phelps that's 2 down and 6 to go!!!   Cathy

Oh MY!  THAT was a SPECTACULAR finish to a SPECTACULAR race.  Michael Phelps is getting all the press w/ his quest for 8 golds, but Jason Lezak was the hero of THAT race.  Simply amazing.  Won by a fingertip !

Not quite sure if I agree to have NBA players in the olympics. Other team's GOALS are to lose to the US by "less than 40 pts." Now that's just ridiculous...

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

If you notice..NBA players come from all countries and are playing on their own teams. If others hope to stay w/in 40 points, maybe this really is the "redeem" team. On a similar note, I get a kick out of how many international athletes train and/or go to school here in the States.

As for the gymnastic team..they weren't expected to even medal with the Hamms out. They were thrilling to watch and made me proud. Bronze is as good as Platinum in this case.

Just watched Nadal beat Hewitt in tennis. I would have thought they would be the final match! Oh well. I like Nadal. Most of all I'm enjoying native Marylander, Michael Phelps. That alone makes these games pure joy for me.   9 and counting     Cathy

Oh, you mean like in the last two Olympics? I'm glad to see the US selected some team players this time around, instead of a conglomeration of egos that are only concerned about how many points they score and how they can cash in on endorsements.

10 and counting now. It was cool how the announcers had Phelps figured out perfectly..."this will look like a race for awhile, and then in the last 50 meters, he'll pulll away like he's racing boys".
Talk about spot on!

The American relay team...WOW!!! It was like they got a ten second head start. They really made it look easy. Women's gymnastics fell apart at the end though sad

Phelps just keeps on doing it! He is simply phenomenal.

I saw something else phenomenal today - one of the Jamaican 100m sprinters, whose name I don't even know - won his heat in 9.92 absolutely strolling the last 30m or so. He had so much more in the locker, so I reckon that world record will go here too.

George,
I saw that sprinter...he absolutely looked like he was coasting at the end. Coasting to a 9.92, unbelievable!

As far as Phelps goes, it appears destiny is on his side. Don't get me wrong, great great swimmer, but .01 seconds??? You've gotta have some luck on your side when you're down to those increments.

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

Michael has been a joy to watch! The 100 butterfly finish was as close as it could be for sure! He is indeed a lucky boy, but that's the way the Universe wants it! He really is a nice kid and makes us proud. Clue to his opponents: DON'T TALK SMACK..It just gives him that extra oomph to beat them!! His latest victim said it would be best for swimming and Michael if he won instead of Michael.....               Cathy

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

I hear you, Michael. Bolt's achievement today is the talk of the Olympics topic on my Dutch football board too. Maybe this amazing race had a greater impact in Europe than in the US? Maybe Americans are shell-shocked because of the lack of US power in this event compared to that little island of Jamaica, who must now be odds on to take the relay gold too.

Totally awesome display of superiority - I agree that he could lower the world record by tenths, rather than just hundreds of a second, if he gave his all over the full 100 meters.

Phelps' seventh gold (all credit to him) was entirely down to him having longer arms (and fingernails). big_smile

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

And Michael Phelps wins a record 8 golds in one olympics!!! I was hoping this would happen... but I'm still stunned it did. Congrats Michael!!!!!
