Re: Mule and BDS, together at last!

now this is a right pairing for bds, such a better fit than kid rock.  this way they can expose fans of real music to their stuff rather than the ignorant drunks that think kid rock is good.

Maybe, but will Gov't Mule give them a younger fan base? Are Mule still doing the reggae thing?

Re: Mule and BDS, together at last!

We saw the Mule play  a couple of weeks ago on Block Island.  Awesome but thunder and lightning shortened show - and of course Matt played on while everyone else was running for cover!  There was a huge age span in the people who were there - babies to whatever!  This is an awesome pairing - Paul, I'm right behind you in the ticket line!

Dancing around the house about this - Joe on Saturday, then Mule and Back Door Slam on HALLOWEEN!  All in a week!

Sandy

P.S.  Love the name of the tour "Kinder Revolution Fall Tour"

Re: Mule and BDS, together at last!

Yeah, I noticed they're playing Rams Head Live in Baltimore MD on Wed 11/5... I'm not nuts about that venue (it's alright, not great), but that's only a 1 1/2 hour drive for me, so I think I'm gonna try to make it.  Don't have my tickets yet, but as of yesterday they were still available... gotta get my crap together here and round up some friends and make some definite plans while I can still get tickets.  I was actually planning to post here to see who all would be making it, and hopefully we can meet up.

I've only seen Gov't Mule once, a few months ago, and thoroughly enjoyed them.  I also have a couple old boots my brother gave me, which I listen to pretty often.  And I've never seen Back Door Slam, but I'm sure I'd be into them, based on everyone's rave reviews here.

Hope I can make it, as I have a lot of other concerts planned this fall too, and we're pretty poor, and my husband will only tolerate so much of my concert addiction, lol... roll

mule has a younger fanbase than joe, and with the type of music bds play, they really can't even hope for a young fan base.  have you ever been to a blues rock concert in this decade?  there is no young fan base.  and that is coming from probably the youngest member of the forum, and youngest person i have ever seen at a blues rock show without their parents.  I'm really not trying to brag on that either and i certianly wish i was wrong, just calling it exactly as I see it.

mule may give them some more fans, which opening for huge mainstream pop acts isn't going to do, since that is not what bds is.

did you see mule at all on their last tour?  they were never doing the reggae thing.  they release one reggae remix album.  the shows are still phenomenal, and the few reggae songs they do play (app. 5-8% of the entire set) fit really well and carry on the tradition of mule never sticking with the same thing.

I so so wish this tour was coming near me, this is the main show i'd like to see this year and it isn't coming to chicago or st louis.

Re: Mule and BDS, together at last!

I think Gov't Mule has a fairly age-diverse fanbase... yeah, there's a lot of young fans, but I know plenty "middle-aged and older" who are big fans too.  Mule is connected and has played with so many other artists that I think a wide range of people have been drawn in over the years.  When I saw them a few months ago I remember the audience being pretty diverse, if not leaning toward older.  In fact I struck up a conversation with a middle-aged(?) guy wearing a Joe Bonamassa t-shirt. smile

On the JamBase site, which I'd say is mostly frequented by young people, and where Gov't Mule is HUGE, I once posted about Joe Bonamassa in a forum thread titled something like "What's the last band/artisit that knocked you off your feet?"  It got no replies except for a guy who agreed with me about Joe, but told me I was wasting my breath (so to speak), because he'd tried to turn that crowd onto blues before and nobody cared.  Made me sad actually... and flabbergasted, since blues is pretty much at the root of everything they all like!  Keep in mind though, only a fraction of Mule's fans are JamBase members, and most members don't bother using the forum, so this experience may be misleading. hmm

I just remembered, I actually saw a thread about Back Door Slam on JamBase the other day... don't remember if I read it though... but anyway they're getting attention there due to touring with Gov't Mule, would be my guess. smile

Generally speaking, you're right about the younger generation not being into blues, which is sad.  However, there is a segment of the young population who knows good music and craves the blues... my son and all his friends are in that group, thank god (yeah, I raised him right, lol)... they know they are unusual, and proud of it too! smile

Well anyway, I for one think these two bands make a great touring pair... probably apt to make new fans for BOTH bands, don't ya think? wink

Re: Mule and BDS, together at last!

This tour wraps in SF with two nights at the Fillmore Nov. 21 & 22. I can't wait to give the Lads a guided tour of the Fillmore. The poster art in the bars is enough to keep you busy for hours, not to mention the vibe, oh yeah we always start the night off across the street at John Lee Hookers place The Boom Boom Room(this is where Joe is playing in the Jane Pauley video on JBTV). I dare any of you to make these gigs. They have a greeter at the top of the stairs in the Fillmore who says,

Howdy Buckaroos & Welcome To The Fillmore,

                                                                            J Dawg

P.S. Don't forget to grab an apple on your way in and don't forget to grab your poster on the way out.

What is success? Is it do yo' own thang, or is it to join the rest?   -Allen Toussaint

Just noticed this comment and thought I had to respond. Did I ever go to a blues rock concert this decade, yes! I went to one last night, it was about my tenth this year. There is a young fan base there, I'm part of them myself. Even when I saw 71 year old Buddy Guy there were some teenagers there. Admittedly there are not as many as I would like, however bands like the Black Keys and Rose Hill Drive (who I saw last night) do have a young fan base. I guess therefore Mule may be the same. Please on't make assumptions about people. No I did not see Mule on their last tour, not because I'm old and in a wheel chair but because I live in the UK and guess what they did not tour the UK on their last tour. My question was an honest one as I have never seem Mule live and did not know about their fan base. What I do know is that they are an offshoot of the Allman Brothers (who do have an older fanbase) and were formed in the mid 1990s, therefore have been around for several years. Glad to hear that they have young fans like yourself and hope the tour is a great success for Govt Mule and Back Door Slam.
