Topic: San Jose Jazz Festival 8/10/08

Just got home from Joe's show on the "Blues and BBQ" stage at the San Jose Jazz Festival.  The band played an energetic almost 90 minute set.  This is my fourth Joe Show this year (Carriage House, Galaxy Theater, Monterey).  Joe had the same effect on the crowd here as in Monterey:  the crowds were sparse and cool at the beginning of the show, and loud and very appreciative at the end.  Joe and the band really have a tremendous gift for inspiring and converting people to their brand of music.   It was great to see the young guitarists crowded into the area in front of the stage, totally inspired by Joe.
I loved the show.  If I were king and could change anything, I would still like to hear more of Rick in the audio mix, and I could tolerate a bit more variety on the set list.
I crown myself a Bonamaniac for having made 4 out of his 6 California shows.  Joe come back and play in our back yard soon!

Re: San Jose Jazz Festival 8/10/08

Hey Cdnrocker. Welcome.

He's right!  Fabulous show!  The street really filled up by the end.  I was lucky enough to be right up front at the barrier about 10-12 feet in front of Joe with a bunch of other Bonamaniacs (BluesMan and Son, Barbara, Eva, Lisa, and other scattered around that I saw).

It was wonderful seeing so many people of the younger persuasion there and totally rocking out.  After the show Scott and I chatted with a couple of teen to 20 somethings who were admiring the guitar collection.  They're new to Joe, and were just amazed at the whole experience.  Many shoutings of "How does he DO that?!?!?" were heard.

I'm hoping that Joe acquires a lot of new fans from the summer festival circuit.  He does not disappoint, and he makes people pay attention who otherwise might not.

It was real nice to hear Blues Deluxe in the set list again.  That was a treat.  But he opened with a new song (Sinners and Saints????), which I hope will be on the new studio album when it come out.  Wow, what a riff!  It rocks, and I'm very lucky my neck isn't sore from all the headbanging I was doing last night.

Rock on.
Lisa.

Re: San Jose Jazz Festival 8/10/08

Thanks Lisa and Tyler. The 1st song was "Spike Driver Blues" which is to be on the next studio CD. We are all dying to hear Joe's version, and the fact that he is opening with it tells me it's powerful. Thanks for sharing your experiences. It makes it easier to wait for my next show.     Cathy

Re: San Jose Jazz Festival 8/10/08

Morning Lisa,

Just to clarify, that was Blue...Z...man Daryl from Sonoma. We don't wanna get his boxers in a bunch by confusing him with someone else. My friends Doug and Mary that I went to Sonora with haven't stopped talking about Joe since Sat. either especially after I introduced them and they got to chat for a few minutes earlier in the day. They were blown away by Joe's laid back demeanor only to witness the fury he unleashed later on stage with his guitar in hand. It was a traditional Bonabaptism for sure.

That was a Theremin device. Best known in rock to be used on the Beach Boy's "Good Vibrations"! Joe uded it to create a scream from the guitar instead of the 1950's science fiction spooky music.

It was a GREAT show.

Re: San Jose Jazz Festival 8/10/08

Thanks for the reviews. Sounds like it was a great show.  And thanks for the pics buckwild. Those are really good.  But, did anyone get a video of "Spike Driver Blues"?  I'm still dying to hear that. hmm

6 weeks, 4 days and counting before I see them again. It seems like forever, but I know it will be worth the wait. cool

My Brother Dave was there yesterday and thanked me for turning him on to Joe. Here is a clip he shot with his camera.

Re: San Jose Jazz Festival 8/10/08

Hi Scott and Lisa - I met the 2 of you and Daryl right before the show started (remember me? I'm Shireen - I was in a brown top) - and recognized you all because of your Bonamassa tshirts -  I got a BTW setlist - I am psyched!

I have been posting on a different thread here about this show, but will post more on this show a bit later over here, since there's now an established thread.

Anyhow, it was an excellent show and I am so glad i got a chance to meet some folks from this forum, though it was brief.

Cheers!

Oh it's your goldtop????  I love that new signature model.  I'm not a huge goldtop fan but it's killer.  I'd love to know what Les Paul he was playing at the end of the night.  Looked like a butterscotch R9 or something but it didn't look like his 2001 R8 with Grovers.  It also had gold hardware for the tuners.

Rock

Re: San Jose Jazz Festival 8/10/08

Hi Buckwild,

Joe and Dave have a code they write on the setlists to designate which guitar Joe wants to play that night. Danny posted the setlist from San Juan last week and included the code and the final encore was Asking Around For You with Rossington written next to it. I'm assuming Joe has a Rossington Signature in the vault now, but I'm still trying to verify. I don't know what else it could mean. Did it look like this?

BTW, can you identify the finish on the Rossington Sig?

Re: San Jose Jazz Festival 8/10/08

If you mean not bein' able to drag myself off my lounge chair on the beach at Pine Mtn. Lake to spend the day in the Pit (San Jose), it was well worth it. I got a shot of Joe on Sat. and told him I probably wouldn't make it Sun. since mtn. time is quality time. Hell it's only 19 days till the next gig with major BBQ action to boot. I'll get my mtn. time in before the next show, then drop in to the other Pit (Reno), except they've got gambling.
