Topic: Blackpool Gig Review

Hi

Had not heard any of joes music except for a quick check on you tube this week.
Understood  from previous reviews that he was a bit special,

The venue Central Working Mens club was great with a capacity of approx 450.

Joe was not afraid to share the limelight and the Bass player was excellent.
Met him after the show and was really nice guy.
Drum solos were excellen t.
I just cant put into words how much I enjoyed this show.
Joe is just amazing.
I adored Mountain time and the acoustic set especially.
The one thing that stood out about the set was how entertaining Joe was.
Superb vocals and unbelievable guitar playing with such varied melody/styles
This has put me on a such a high I cant believe at 51 I have found a new hero.

To Joe and the Band
Thankyou so much for a great evening.

Regards Ian McCabe (Blackpool)

Re: Blackpool Gig Review

Hi Ian

Know exactly what you mean.

I'm 50 and discovered Joe only last June.
I couldn't believe that after all that time of passionately loving music of the Joe type that I hadn't even heard of him. I first heard a CD playing in a bar in Antwerp and though it was some obscure (but brilliant) Belgian or Dutch guitarist !!

Nothing has touched me as much as Joes music since I heard Led Zeppelin cut through the general noise at my school youth club in about 1970. This guy has hit every musical spot in me. He is the player I want to be (sorry Jimmy).

I couldn't be at the gig last night but my wife and 14 yo son went and they were very impressed. I did see Joe twice during his last UK tour in February this year and also in Sheffield a couple of weeks ago.
I took a friend to Sheffield to see Joe for the first time and he was so impressed he went to Blackpool last night and took his 15 yo son and sons friend. The word is spreading. I just hope Joe can still maintain the closeness he has to his audience when he makes it big time. If you thought last night was good. you should have seen the February Blackpool gig in a small room above the theatre. 90 people - and my son and me sitting 2 feet away from Joe. Bit of a joke venue for such a gig but brilliant for those of us lucky enough to have tickets. I believe that they have regular blues gigs in that venue which is certainly worth checking out.

At the gigs in February, Joe came out to meet the crowd after the show, but it seems he didn't do this last night. Great shame if that's the case. My son waited to meet this genius as he did in February with CD to sign. But I do appreciate that Joe gives his all at the shows and might not be up to that some nights. He did get the Stone Sole River CD and met those guys who signed their CD for him, which was great. That's two signed SSR CDs we have now !!

Mountain Time - oh yessssss !!!  Don't be near my neck hair when he plays it - I might just poke your eye !!

Glad you appreciated the contribution to the show by the other two guys as well.

Welcome aboard.

Best wishes
Ges.

ps - do you play yourself ??

Re: Blackpool Gig Review

hi guys

This is my first posting on any message board so appoligies if its a bit naff.
The Blackpool gig last night was fantastic. It was the first time i've seen Joe live and what a treat it was.
When I turned up at the venue I was a bit woried the show was going to turn out a bit of a let down but I need'nt of worried. The place filled out and througout the gig a great atmosphere developed.
I've seen satriani,Steve Vai,Dweezil Zappa and BB King this year and for me Joe's show  was right up their.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes it was wonderfuil show.
I was amazed how much I enjoyed the show considering I didn't know any of the songs.
This is going to cost me a fortune collecting the back catalogue.
But I am sure looking forward to the slow journey.

Ges

90 people I bet that was fantastic.
From the opening notes I was totally absorbed. (Joe playing behind the curtain with the bass player out front, had me fooled at first.
I found the Blackpool crowd a little subdued but thats the norm in the pool. They were very appreciattive and everybody I spoke to was raving about Joe.(1 guy at the Bar kept saying hes brill but wait till you see Ry Cooder.
It was worth going just to see the smile on my pals face. He had never heard of Jo b4 last night. He rang me at blumming 0200 shouting listen to this playing Joes DVD at full blast down the phone.
Well I staggered in work (worse for ware after a few bottles of Newcastle Brown and by 10am I had spread the gospel to at least 50 people.
A few guys on the shop floor had heard of Jo.
I was hoping to meet Jo but he didn't appear so after 15mins we ran round the side hopin to see him. (Felt more like a 15yr old LOL)
After doing a salami to the Blacked out windows on the coach.
The Bigfeller (BASS Player came out)
He has quite a presence on stage which I found humorous at times.
Had a chat for 5 mins. Really great guy and lovely end to the evening. I only bowed 5 times and shook his hand 10 times.
The sound system and acoustics were excellent with every drum beat Bass riff and lead guitar heard clearly. (My only disappointment was 2 guys constantly chatting behind us.)
This only really bugged me at the quiet start of the acoustic set.
Thought Jo,s vocals were sensational, great range and never missed a note.
I will never forget when he played Mountain Time. (such variation)
OK thats it, yes I play guitar but prettyordinarily

Cheers Ian

Re: Blackpool Gig Review

Hi g0fyd

were you sitting in the middle towards the back?

Those two (three?) guys constantly chatting were a right pain the @r*@ weren't they!
I mean, if you want to go to a pub and chat all night with your mates then, errm, go to a pub - not a gig!! Let's face it, by definition, it's a gig - it's LOUD, so you have to SHOUT to have a conversation, and ruin it for those in earshot!! I could hear almost every word and they were amongst the most ill-informed/opinionated bunch of losers I've ever heard. Mind you, I'm an old git and no one knows more about pop/rock music than me anyway (I'm trying to lighten up a bit here folks by the way!!)

On a more positive note I really enjoyed the gig. The chaps I was with were trying to work out what the prog rock at the end was. Thinking it was King Crimson-ish at first we settled on it being -
Heart of the Sunrise as an intro, with the outro from Starship Trooper (both by Yes). Are we right?
btw - I'm new to this Forum so apologies if it's covered elsewhere.

Liked the New Day/Spoonful routine as well.
As a bassist myself, Joe's bassist made me feel an absolute beginner though!
(playing at the Gynn this Saturday (Spikes, 5 piece rock band) - anyone coming along?)

Cheers

Hope to visit the Forum again.

Re: Blackpool Gig Review

Well I recognised Heart of the Sunrise but I think your right with Starship trooper as well.
You never know I might make the Gynn
We were towards the back on the right hand side.
They were 2 youngish lads seemed to be computer nerds going on about technique all time
and not understanding the emotion from Jo's guitar.

Regards Ian

Re: Blackpool Gig Review

know it's confusing that the two people who posted about Pacific Rd have a name that is pronounced the same ,but spelt differently , however we are definitely two different people - apparently he's better looking & definitely in better shape cos he held a camcorder for two hours filming the gig , i on the other hand would n't be physically capable of such a feat a) because i'm a wimp & b) cos i don't a camcorder .

forgot to mention it last night , but was impressed with how quickly you managed to get your  thoughts about the gig  onto the site . hope you're not recovering too quickly !

Re: Blackpool Gig Review

Jeff, no worries mate - guess you must be short sighted! Contact me on the e-mail address and you can have a copy of the DVD when I get it done! No apologies for the quality by the way!

Forgot to thank the Kite Club at Blackpool for putting the gig on...........

Re: Blackpool Gig Review

Geoff,
Overwhelmed by that , mate . Would really like to see it , i got a couple of clips on a compact camera , but was mainly taking stills with my main camera , i really , really appreciate your kind offer . Being an idiot & never having used a camera for movie clips before I made the fatal error  of treating it like a stills camera & turned it portrait ,so most of the clips can only be watched by either turning the telly on its side or leaning dramatically left , haha !. Iam hoping to send some stills into the site , so perhaps i could reciprocate with a few prints if you see any you like & can definitely put my very dodgy clips & stills ( some ok ones there i think, in fact one young lady described one of them as GREAT , but that was just before i tripped over her guide dog  ) onto a dvd for you .

How many times have you watched it ? Or should i ask how many times a day ?

Cheers again, mate

                               Jeff ( not Geoff  )

Re: Blackpool Gig Review

No problem Jeff, the nice touch which you will enjoy is when Joe only shakes one hand - yours!!!

The run time takes the recording onto two discs, which I still have to complete. As soon as I get a copy that I'm happy with, I'll drop one round if you live locally. If not I'll post them to you. Contact me by e-mail with your address at geoff@oldfield.u-net.com
