Topic: The wonderful world of instant messengers, webcams, etc.

It's been suggested to me off board that there might be a few board members who haven't yet entered the world of instant contact on the web, and who might therefore benefit from a quick primer on how it all works. So, here, for those who might need it, is Instant Messengering 101.

All this stuff is FREE.

If you've never done it before because you've heard internet 'chat room' horror stories or such like, don't worry, this is totally safe. You only talk to people you want to talk to. Others cannot start conversations with you unless they have your 'nickname'. These are not 'chat rooms', but direct connections between two or more willing participants.

Windows has a built in messenger called 'Windows Live Messenger'. If you activate one that has never been used before on your pc, you'll be told that a newer version is available - go for it. The current version is 8.5xx

All you need to start is to have the program installed (all free downloads) and an email address to sign up with. In the old days you had to have a hotmail or msn address to you use MSN messenger (the precursor of Windows Live Messenger - WLM), but that's no longer the case. You can use any email address now, though I think you still need a Yahoo address for YIM (Yahoo Instant Messenger). The current version is 8.1xx

Both WLM and YIM allow you to write one-on-one texts back and forth. Both also allow group chat sessions. Both have lots of smilies available and loads of other features that I rarely, if ever, use. Both also support voice and video communication, unless you have a very old version. This means you can talk with your conversation partner if you both have microphones and speakers. You can also use a webcam in real time if you both have one. Cathy and I have been spending time like this with each other for months now and it works a treat, on the whole.

Then there's Skype, which is a phone program. You can use Skype for free with pc to pc voice and video. They also have a service that costs (a little) with which you can call any phone from your pc.

What's cool about all these programs is that they allow you to stay in regular touch with friends anywhere in the world (time zone issues permitting) in a fun way, and for free. What could be better than that? big_smile

All these programs are safe. No strangers can 'intrude' on your conversation. If anyone ever hassles you, you just block them. Lastly, it's a good idea to exchange contact names and email addresses in private rather than on a public board.

Re: The wonderful world of instant messengers, webcams, etc.

My new computer/monitor (2-3 months old) has a webcam that hasn't been used yet.
My daughter leaves for 3 weeks in Europe on Wednesday (August 6th), so we're gonna see if we can figure it out while she's traveling.
She's figuring she'll find an internet cafe and at least be able to check/send e-mails. Not sure if she'll find anything with webcam capabilities, but I guess we'll find out.

Eva,
I knew you had internet capabilities over there : ), but I've never been in an internet cafe, so I didn't know if those computers were more utilitarian or if they were decked out with accessories such as webcams. I wasn't sure, but I assumed she'd at least be able to see us of she found a computer without a webcam.

As far as where my daughter's going, you may be sorry you asked once you see the lengthy list. Some of these include day trips, so bear with me. Here goes:
Lands in Munich and spends the night, then
Venice (Aug 8)
Naples (Aug 9)
Sorrento (Aug 9/10)

Bill, aware as I am that this is entirely off this particular topic, I'd nevertheless like to offer any help or local guidance your daughter might want here in Sin City. big_smile

Thanks. I realized I was straying a bit, but I think it's loosely related to the whole technology/webcam issue originally brought up. I'll let you know if she'd like some advice or guidance.

Bill S.

I apologize if I strayed too far off topic.

Re: The wonderful world of instant messengers, webcams, etc.

All right I'm on the team, it took me forever to find a user name...now all I have to do is have mommy hold my hand and show me what the heck to do when i want to talk to George and Cathy and who ever...no web cam yet...maybe down the road, when I remodel my computer/music room....my daughter is moving out in a few months (she's my competion for computer time)...anyhow, I'm in, on , out, gone for now!!

Dave

Re: The wonderful world of instant messengers, webcams, etc.

For all that wish to chat..remember to share your user name with those you wish to chat with, or they won't be able to find you. Talking now with George and Libby.     Cathy

Re: The wonderful world of instant messengers, webcams, etc.

Shred:  You can probably buy a cheapish webcam at Best Buy or similar places for well under $50, you don't need a room remodel ;-)

I used to use IM's quite a bit when I was on AOL several hours a night, but don't have many I chat with on them lately.  It's fun, but be careful if you have more than one conversation going that you're typing the right thing to the right person....how embarassing ;-/

AIM (America Online Instant Messenger) is also free whether you're an AOL subscriber or not, I have Yahoo! too.  I have a webcam but haven't had it hooked up since I upgraded to XP...not sure it works with this puter.  I've lost my mic but you can get cheap ones that plug into the USB port if you're so inclined to talk voice instead of type.

It's fun....we should do it more.
