Topic: Hello from Russia!

Hi guys! My name is Egor, I'm a four-year student from a small Russian town Blagoveshchensk (it stands on the border with China - the People's Republic is just on the other side of our river Amur!). I play bass in a local band (by the way, Eric Czar is one of my favorite bass players) and I simply can't live without music. We define our genre as progressive rock (yeah, back to the 1970s))), but I do believe that good music has no genre - that's why I'm equally pleased to listen to Rush, Camel, George Benson and, of course, Joe.
The first Joe's album I've listened to was "Had to Cry Today" and it is one of the strongest things I've ever heard! I still remember how much impressed I was after the last track was over. "When She Dances" is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life - just a pure feeling interpreted by notes.
I'll be glad to answer any question you have))) And, please, excuse me for my bad English))

Re: Hello from Russia!

How wonderful is this? Welcome from the far east Egor - especially when you come out with this most moving and beautiful of Joe's songs.

I don't know how long you've been lurking, but I advise that you take the elevator down to the basement 'Other artists' department, where you can discover incredible amounts of great music you never heard before!

Welcome, Egor!
Are you attending Amur State University? (I just looked it up on Wikipedia).

What's it like living on the border of China and Russia?

Re: Hello from Russia!

Welcome Egor!
It's a pleasure for you to meet me.  lol
The Red Elvises toured through Florida last year.
What kind of bass do you play?  That's darn near the far East.

Welcome to the fold Egor. I'm always very impressed by fans who don't have English as a first language joining the forum. Don't worry about making mistakes or not being understood. I sometimes find it hard to understand some of the English speakers here! It's marvellous how music brings people together from all walks of life, all nationalities and beliefs don't you think?

Re: Hello from Russia!

Thanks again for your welcome - I've never had such a warm greeting at any of Russian forums. So, now I'll try to answer your questions:
1) ken,
Yes, definetely. Amur State University is my alma mater. I study at philological faculty, my specialization is written translation from English into Russian and vice versa. My second languages are English and Chinese. Amur State University is a comparatively small one (we have about 10,000 students) but, nevertheless, we have one of the highest scolarships in Russia - it's even higher that in Moscow State University:). Each year we have two festivals at our University - "Junior Show" in November and "Students' Spring" in April. These shows give a nice chance to all of our musicians, dancers and singers to feel what the stage is. We used to play at both of these festivals - at "Junior Show" we played the instrumental edit of our own song and at "Students' Spring" we presented the cover version of "YYZ" by Canadian fathers of progressive rock "Rush".
I can't say that living on the Chinese boarder is something especial. We have no specific restrictions so it's just like living anywhere else in Russia. Of course, there are a lot of  Chinese people in our town and it's really interesting to communicate with people of other culture. A real advantage of the on-border position of my town is that it's quite cheap to travel to Chinese tropical resorts because we don't have to pay much money for the road itself. And, of course, we have hundreds Chinese cafes.
2) bigjeffjones,
Yeah, a real pleasure:) My main instrument is a 4-string copy of Music Man Stingray by OLP (it's a Chinese company that makes the licensed budget copies of Music Man guitars and basses - the abbreviation OLP means Oficially Licensed Product). It was bought for less than 200 USD but it sonds surprisingly well. I tryed a couple of Soundgears by Ibanez which were five times more expensive but their sound compared to my OLP seemed to me flat and boring. I also have a 6-string active bass by Jews (it's a Korean company) but now I'm thinking about selling it in order to by a second-hand amp and cabinet.
My gear is a simple Digitech B50 effects processor (all effects I use during ordinary playing are compression, amp modeller, chorus and reverberation, sometimes I also need flanger) and Behringer Tube Ultragain Mic200 preamp, which provides my bass with a trully vintage sound of 1970s.
And what are your instruments and gear?
3) Tripsy,
I do believe that music, as well as love, is the most powerful thing on the Earth! And this forum can clearly prove it!
By the way: Amsterhammer, thanks for your link!
I hope I haven't forgotten any of your questions.

Re: Hello from Russia!

Thank God the "wall" has fallen.

Re: Hello from Russia!

Egor,

I like most OLP stuff, a lot of bang for the buck.  I play a '74 Fender Jazz bass through a HUGE Kustom Groove amp, no effects but my hands, I've posted a pic somewhere on this forum  http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtop … 69&p=1  Post #9

Re: Hello from Russia!

bigjeffjones,

Your gear looks like my dream! As for bass effects I'm sure there's no necessity in them (except something for having fun like flanger or delay) if you have a nice amp. Once I happened to play a couple of Ibaneaz and Cort basses through 100 watt Behringer and I could make the sound I wanted without any effects.
By the way, I have one question abot Jazz Bass. Have you ever played Geddy Lee's signature model? Is there something especial in this instrument? I just like the sound of "Rush" bass.
P.S. I'm really surprised that OLP is known in US. Now I respect my bass even more:)
Thanks.

Re: Hello from Russia!

I have not played the Getty Lee model, so I'm not qualified to give an opinion.  I kinda come from a different genre of music.  Even though all the motown monsters from my day played Precisions, John Paul Jones played a Jazz... as did SEVERAL other Blues bassists from back in the day.

I don't know if it's safe to assume that because I've heard of OLP many other Americans have.  I tend to be a bit off, sometimes. big_smile

Peace and some Heat!

Re: Hello from Russia!

Hallo Allan,
. Like with Neil a few minutes ago, welcome to this wonderful site and I mean truly wonderful!
I'm here for nearly 4 years now and it's still great.

Sorry for the delay but I just returned from holiday in France.

As you are from Russia I tell you something strange. As you and I think many soccerfans know Guus Hiddink, the Dutch coach of the Russian team.
I got his emailaddress and sent him an email that Joe is performing in Moscow in December. I know he likes this kind of music, drives a motorcycle, I think a Harley and wrote him that when he's in Moscow that time he MUST go to see JOE!
Told him about me , my wife Corin who was born and raised in Varsseveld where Guus was born too, Guus's father was her headmaster at primary school.

I asked Guus in the email that when he liked Joe maybe he could call his name somewhere in the press, papers, interview or anything, maybe he could even go there with the National Soccer team.
Would be great promotion for Joe, Russia is a big market.

Waiting for an answer now.( if he reads it and does)
If I hear nothing will do it in a month or so again.

Are you going to that show too??
