Topic: Is the internet a BIG problem?

....I can flat out tell you it has caused problems in my household in the past.....my wife has a brother who lost his job, then his wife to another man, he never gave her and the children any attention and would call in sick to play on the computer for up to 15 hours a day!!....anyhow, maybe this forum isnt the place for some of you to discuss such a topic....as for myself, I am absolutely addicted to this machine....I've got to the point when I realize it's time to step back from time to time.... my wife is pretty cool for the most part, I'm not hard to get a hold of.....like I told her once "hey, I'm not playing a double header tonight and heading to the bar afterwards like the old days".....any thoughts?.....any ideas?.....just another addiction to tame?...lol

Re: Is the internet a BIG problem?

if you spend 15 hours a day on the internet, it isnt an internet problem, it is a you problem, and really that goes for any life altering addiction that isnt physical.  and even then nothing does you wheter it is heroin porno or gambling it is a matter of will power and personal choice and responsibility.  that story about the guy not having times for his kids, i realize this is family but if you can't make time for your kids you are not a good father period, and blaming the internet makes you a bad father who blames his problems on what he can besides himself.

for me if it doesnt impact your life it isnt a problem.  yeah i get on it out of boredom when i could be doing something more productive but even t hen i am usually messing about on my guitar while here.  times when i have less going on in my life like now, im on it more.  when i have school, a girlfriend, hell if i am reading a good book then i'm on it less.  ups and downs.

Agreed.

Priorities and choices. Adults make them everyday, some better than others.

The moral of this story is what?

IMO it is simple.  Take care of biz and homework and stay a winner.  Live in a fantasy world and abdicate all responsibility and be a loser.  His wife?  HIS WIFE?

Addiction is a an OCD disease and can be deadly.  I am not one to tame anything.

"As of myself, I am nothing.  The father does the works."  The proper alignment of will is probably key.  Sometimes I settle for the lesser of two evils, but that gives only temporary satisfaction.

Good question, Dave.  Very good indeed.

Re: Is the internet a BIG problem?

It's more like salvation for me. Having to be here with my Mom most of the time, it connects me to the "outside world". I think it could be a problem if it's in lieu of living a life. Maybe the fact that I do NOT have an addictive personality helps. If it means I'm avoiding chores..well that's NOTHING new!! smile                        Cathy

I work 40 hrs a week, take classes online - and when I get home - I barely watch TV. I go online to get any info or entertainment. It's kind of gripping and exhausting at the same time. That's why vacations are so nice....

Re: Is the internet a BIG problem?

That's a good point, Nic.  I'd have to say I've traded in TV viewing for internet viewing.....so it's pretty much a wash for me.  But, since I'm the only one affected by it, it's a little different than someone that chooses surfing over watching a TV show with their family.  That type of escapism seems to indicate a deeper problem, like suhl said.

I'd also agree with Cathy.  Our situations have been very similar, and the internet allowed me to stay in touch with the outside world.....and make a ton of REAL friends, who helped me keep my sanity.....such as it is.  But those friends are forever.....advantage internet.....

The Big Man hit the nail on the head.  OCD.  Anyone who is predisposed to that type of behavior; unhappy with their life and flailing around for something to make themselves feel whole, is gonna latch onto anything that makes them feel better, and keep the real and important issues in a box somewhere.....

The internet certainly has an allure, but so do a lot of thangs.  Like Phil said, it's a matter of priorities and choices.....

Now, if you'll excuse me.....I hear youTube calling.  Coming Master.....

yeah.  picking video games over a woman who loves you is natural selection i think.  the guy was a loser, no two ways about it.
