yes and no.  if you are going to spend three minutes writing a turd like green days american idiot, then no.  if you are going to do it right, like dylan's masters of war, youngs ohio, ccr's fortunate son, hell even war pigs.  more recently if you have heard james mcmurtry's we can't it here or really any of his political material is good.  i don't like it if that is all political and i don't like preachy but it can be good.  music can be whatever it wants but if it is written for **## then it is hard to take the statement seriously be it about love or politics or anything done with feeling

some people consider American Idiot awesome

and those people are ignorant.  i'm not ready to call them stupid, but if they have heard smart/good political music i wonder if they would think the same way.

this is good political music

Re: CSNY movie or "should music be political" ?

Politics, protest, love, hate, emotion, kids, parents - even Mothers in Law have featured in songs and all have merit. Dylan's early protest songs forged a niche for him and he was linked to them for years. Yes, there is a place for politics IN MUSIC, but what winds me up is artists banging on about their political beliefs on stage between songs and off stage on TV.

Whoever realised that stars of music and films can influence public opiion, latched onto something. Sadly in these days where brainless celebrities are lauded, the opinions of celebrities count for something (I still can't understand why) the problem is, that the celebrities start to believe it of themselves - Bono is a perfect example!

Eva, Your English is magnificent.  It's obvious that the movie touched you.  Perhaps I'm jaded beyond saving about some things.  My age?  Experience?

You spoke so eloquently about those images and your feelings.  How was the music?  That's what I would've paid to see and hear and feel.

Thanks for your kind words Jeff smile.

I was really touched by the movie, you´re right - and the music: I didn´t know too many songs of CSN&Y before (exept the obvious ones of course wink) and we kind of went to the movie out of interest in the documentary, not because we were big fans before (and the actual music was only a part of the movie). But I have to say that I was touched by some of the songs they played, especially "Find the cost of Freedom", I just sat there and cried with the mum.

I will have a look if I can find the new album in our record shop today and will give it a listen ... I´ll report back later wink.
