Re: rory gallagher petition

I'm not sure if you have noticed you can email the petition to friends, so if you know any Rory friends who would not read this post, you can let them know about it.

Someone once asked Jimi Hendrix, "how does it feel to be the best blues guitar player alive?" and he answered "I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher."

This would be very cool, if true. Rory was incredible, but Jimi never said that. This is a variation of the legend regarding guitarist Phil Keaggy :

Rumors have followed Keaggy for years that Jimi Hendrix had supposedly named him as his answer to the question Johnny Carson asked him, "who is the best guitarist in the world?" while making an appearance on The Tonight Show. Another version of the story goes something like, "Jimi, how does it feel to be the world's greatest guitar player?" To which Jimi supposedly replied, "I don't know, you'll have to ask Phil Keaggy!" which according to some was from an interview in Rolling Stone or Guitar Player Magazine. Sometimes, the rumor is that it was Eric Clapton, or that it was on the Dick Cavett show. A recent variant has it that it was Eddie Van Halen on Letterman or with Barbara Walters who was asked the question. During live performances, Keaggy has mentioned it but personally thinks the rumors are untrue. However, because many of these shows did not keep archives of many of their early shows, it is nearly impossible to either confirm or disprove the rumors completely. Some fans have claimed to have seen the show in question, or read the interview but to date, no one has presented a tape, a magazine article or any kind of evidence to confirm it. Phil was asked this at one of his guitar clinics he held in California a few years ago and his answer was simply, "I don't think there is anything to it at all. I doubt that Jimi ever heard me play as he had died in England before I recorded with Glass Harp at his Electric Ladyland Studios in New York City. Someone told me years ago that when asked that question he replied, 'Phil Keaggy is the shortest guitarist in the world,' which is more believable.

Phil Keaggy is fantastic and so was Rory, but both stories are urban legends. However having said that, I signed the petition as Rory should have his own airport. (Although it would be ironic, as for years in the 80's Rory never toured the U.S. as he became deathly afraid of flying)

However, Jimi did admit one time during a TV interview to being the best guitarist in that chair, at that moment. wink

Re: rory gallagher petition

Here's the story I heard from LA in the day...maybe 68-69.

The band played at the Whisky A Go Go where the late guitar god Jimi Hendrix became impressed with Terry's soaring guitar work.  He would tell Walt Paradaizer "You're guitar player is better than me" and would quote to James Guercio "You know I am pretty good but this cat blows me away".

Hendrix refering to Terry Kath of the Chicago Transit Authority.

More urban legend?

That Jeff is supposedly true, and Hendrix was a big fan of Chicago when they were still known as Chicago Transit Authority, even having them open up for The Experience on many dates. So it has credence for sure. Kath was an amazing guitarist who unfortunately made a really stupid, ill fated move.

Re: rory gallagher petition

I've also heard that Jimi Hendrix praised heavily Billy Gibbons (in the days before ZZ Top).

Getting back to Rory, these are some quotes that are supposed to be true:

Playing on stage with him in LA was one of the biggest thrills for me ever." „
—Slash (Guns N' Roses)

“ "A beautiful man and an amazing guitar player. He was a very sensitive man and a great musician." „
—The Edge (U2)

“ "One of the things that was crucial for me I got from Rory Gallagher, which was the idea of, like, being a guitar player for life and living it." „
—Johnny Marr (The Smiths)

“ "Rory's death really upset me. I heard about it just before we went on stage, and it put a damper on the evening. I can't say I knew him that well, but I remember meeting him in our offices once, and we spent an hour talking. He was such a nice guy and a great player." „
—Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin

“ "So these couple of kids come up, who's me and my mate, and say 'How do you get your sound Mr. Gallagher?' and he sits and tells us. So I owe Rory Gallagher my sound." „
—Brian May (Queen)

“ "Rory's death is a tragic loss of a great musician and a very good friend." „
—Van Morrison

“ "The man who got me back into the blues." „
—Eric Clapton

“ "An uncompromisingly serious musician" „
—The Times, 16 June 1995.

“ "Rory is probably the single guitarist who meant the most to me." „
—Tom Guerra, guitarist of Mambo Sons

“ "It was all about him playing the guitar, it got into your soul." „
—Cameron Crowe (Writer/Film Director)

“ "In the 70s he built himself a reputation as a live performer of tremendous vitality." ”
“ "He was even headhunted to join The Rolling Stones." „
—Niall Stokes (Editor, Hot Press)
