Topic: Blues/rock/reggae from Mali - Vieux Farka Toure

Now this is something completely different, certainly for this board. I do hope that at least a few of you will make the effort to listen because I think there's some interesting, different, and very worthwhile stuff here. I'm certainly going to explore him some more.

This is lad is meant to be 'the' guitar hero in Mali, having taken over that mantle form his father, one Ali Farka Toure. For some reason he calls himself 'vieux', which of course means 'old'.

See what you think, I like it.

Here's another co-inky-dink..George played some of this for me via our msn chat. I really enjoyed the bluesy sound with an undeniable African sound. The name sounded familiar, so I searched my CD's. As it happens, I have Ali Farks Toure (his father) with Ry Cooder, "Talking Timbuktu", which I must confess I haven't listened to in a very long time. But, I guess the Universe is talking to me... These are pretty cool videos George.
Really liked it.Too bad I had no idea what the songs were about.
But that did not spoil my fun listening to it.:)

Interesting thanks for the links.

Just wondering if he's Vieux, does that mean that his father Ali was known as Tres Vieux!

Tinariwen are another African "blues" group. Here are some links to their music:

Dept. of no longer surprising but still ridiculous coinkydinks part 328 -

Cathy showed me this cd, which I had never heard of - the next day (yesterday) I see a piece about this very cd in an article about Ry Cooder in my Dutch tv guide. roll

He won a Grammy for it.

Yes, there is a lot of wonderful African music: Salif Keita, Manu Dibango, Ali Farka Toure ,not to speak of the South Africans like Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) and Thomas Mapfumo. Besides Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal playing with African bands Bonnie Raitt has realized the power of South African-style guitars ("Hear me Lord" on Silver Lining).

I've quoted you in this old topic Günter, so as not to hijack Roy's topic. Maybe you missed this first time around?

Just for the record, my favorite African artist, Thomas Mapfumo, is of course from Zimbabwe. wink

More material for us to talk about in London. big_smile

Hi George, nice to have the African connection, too. Of course Mapfumo is from Zimbabwe, I used "South Africa" meaning the southern part of Africa.

This is MORE than great George - haven´t heard such a cool mix of musical styles in a long time! Soulful playing and singing in the first and a light summer feeling in the second video ... what more can you ask for?! wink
Is there a CD of this guy?

Cowinkydink #329 - I had the record with Ry Cooder that Cathy mentioned just on the top of my "to buy" list for quite some time now and was just about to order it from Amazon. big_smile

Thanks a lot for that one George!!

Eva

P.S.: Did you find the video because it said "live at Joe´s pub" in the first place?! tongue
