Re: Favre Drama

I dunno about that. This story was posted awhile back about the teams feelings...there have been some story developments since this was written but it appears to address the concern of whether the team is OK with it.

SOME PACKERS EXPECT TO GET “OUR QUARTERBACK” BACK
Posted by Mike Florio on July 8, 2008, 2:04 p.m.
With reports of Brett Favre planning to send a letter within the next week or so seeking to be placed on the Packers’ active roster, there has been much discussion and speculation about whether Favre wants to play for the team he has quarterbacked since 1992, and vice-versa.

One factor that has been omitted is whether Favre’s teammates would welcome him back.

Based on information we’ve picked up via our network of sources, the answer is a resounding “hell yes.”

Players already are referring privately to the notion of getting “our quarterback” back.  There’s also a feeling within the locker room that the Packers can’t trade or release Favre without subjecting G.M. Ted Thompson to genuine concerns that he would be the target of some type of physical retaliation from one or more fans.

We’re also told that the players have yet to warm up to Aaron Rodgers, the man who is slated to become the next starting quarterback in Green Bay, if Favre stays retired or if he goes elsewhere.

Rodgers has been generally indifferent regarding his relationships with teammates.   Also, there’s a belief among some of the players that Rodgers’ “get on board or shut up” remarks from last week to Sports Illustrated, which comments were obscured by the news of Favre’s possible return, reflect that Rodgers doesn’t understand the unique relationship between Packers players and the citizens of Green Bay.

So if Favre returns to the Packers, what will happen with Rodgers?  He is signed through 2009 at manageable salaries of $680,000 and $800,000 over the next two seasons, respectively, under a contract that includes escalators based on playing time.

Our guess is that he’ll demand a trade.  Possible suitors (as we see it) would include the Buccaneers, the Seahawks, the 49ers (who considered taking him instead of Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in 2005), and any of the three NFC North rivals whose depth charts at the position would be upgraded instantly with the arrival of Rodgers.

Re: Favre Drama

i havent read the thread.  i rarely look at off topics and forgot there are a lot of other big nfl fans here.  here is my view from a a pretty big favre fan.  they are not my favorite team but i have loved favre since i got really into football.  anyway.  he shouldnt have had the tearful retirement press conference only to come back.  it would be slightly more forgivable(though not totally) if he h adn't been considering retirement at the end of like the last five seasons.  because of that, it made it seem like this time it was a done deal all those times he'd considered then decided against it.  there seemed to be some finality(is that a word?) to this.

that said, if he does come back, the thought of benching him is utterly ludicrous.  the packers have a pretty damn good team and unless you are run incredibly well and are consistently year in and year out one of the best teams in the league(see pats and colts) then windows for superbowls are incredibly small especially with free agency.  aaron rodgers...unproven, highly overrated coming out of college to begin with.  sorry packers fans but if you are expecting anything better than average with him, prepare to be let down.  the year he was drafted people acted like it was such a shock for him to fall. t he thing is in a decent quarterback year, he probably wouldnt even have gone in the first round.  and he is unproven.  and pretty much no qb big ben being the only exception i can think of honestly in the history of nfl comes out their first season starting and does well.

so if they want to cheat their fans out of a shot at the super bowl, pending favre comes back, then by all means start rodgers over favre.

Re: Favre Drama

No way is Brett going to hold a clipboard - just not gonna happen.  If he returns I
believe he will start- however then we'll have 4 QB's and one will have to be
traded - so then Brett's to blame for us wasting a draft pick.  I agree with Roy that
he was just so down after that Giant's game that he made a rash decision.  He blamed
himself for throwing that interception and losing the game.  But I also blame the
defense - that Platico (spelling) guy was killing us - defence couldn't stop him.

Re: Favre Drama

The reason the fans actually do have a say in this instance is because the Packers are publicly owned. My parents are shareholders. Given, I'm sure the bulk of the fans in that protest were likely not sharholders, but you get my point.

The protests and chants for "favre, one more year" have been going on since 2004. I was at GB's final home games of 2004, 2005, and 2006...and they all ended with that chant. It used to be easy to get those tickets because of the bad weather, and there'd be a ton of us college kids with our parent's tickets smile It did get harder and hard to get tickets in late Dec as the years went on because of the Favre retirement looming.

jaci - you mean Plexico Burress. He was injured and Al Harris had a hard time covering him. Bad ankle. I remember. There was other stuff in that game though...Jarret Bush could've fell on a fumble, but instead tried to pick it up - didn't even recover the ball. That would've ended the game. With mistakes, pennies make dollars. But that's niether here nor there. At least NYG beat the Patriots.

FAVRE SPEAKS.....

FAVRE TO SPEAK ON FOX NEWS
Posted by Mike Florio on July 14, 2008, 3:03 p.m.
Packers quarterback Brett Favre will end his silence regarding the recent events surrounding his unretirement via an exclusive interview with . . . Greta Van Susteren?

Seriously.

Favre was interviewed on Monday by Van Susteren, who likely doesn’t know whether to put air in a football or give it a facelift, and who hosts an evening show on the Fox News Channel.

In a crypic blurb on her show’s web site, Van Susteren says that Favre “accepts” the decision of G.M. Ted Thompson not to grant his release, but she also reiterates Favre’s desire to exit the Packers.

The interview will air Monday night on Fox News Channel at 10:00 p.m. EDT.  (Even Keith Olbermann will be watching.)  In a photo on the Van Susteren site, Favre is seen talking to her in his normal appearance — unshaven, gray T-shirt, and camo shorts.  Amazingly, however, he is wearing shoes.  And socks.

Regardless of the potential impact of Favre’s words on his football career, the selection of FOX News and Van Susteren will raise eyebrows with folks like Chris Mortensen and Peter King and Jay Glazer and Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun-Herald and others who undoubtedly have tried to put themselves in position to get this “get.”

Re: Favre Drama

Ho Hum...play, don't play, whatever. The guy's 39? Can't play forever.
The comeback may not have anything to do about money, but I don't see any mention of Brett offering to play for a reduced salary either.

Tim Lincecum is the second best pitcher in the National league. He leads Sheets in strike outs and more importantly ERA. There are 5 other pitchers with better stats than Sheets, why he got the start is a mystery to me and other fans as well. If he chokes at least Lincecum can come off the bench to pick him up. I'm happy to see Cliff Lee of the Tribe gettin' the start for the junior circuit teamers, that was a no brainer.

I agree to a certain extent, but in another - it doesn't matter as long as it comes from the horse's mouth...or should I say donkey.

I never thought I'd have this much discontent for Favre...after all these years.

This could be a Barry Sanders thing where he doesn't come back unless he can go to another team.

Re: Favre Drama

I heard Brett speak tonight.
My view:
They should let him come back and compete for a job (and Brett should accept a pay cut as a potential second stringer) or they should release him.
Agree or disagree with his desire to return, IMO they owe him that, at least.
On Brett's side, he can't expect the Packers to pay him $13 million to potentially hold a clipboard. He RETIRED for God's sake and he can't blame that on the team (he seemed to be trying to).

Re: Favre Drama

People want to know asap if their quarterback is going to retire...much less a legend who holds most of the QB records to date. He's been pressured to "figure it out" ever offseason since 2004. It is a big change when you dont have the QB you've had since 1992. So he retired, GB had to change things to cater Rodger's style. What are they going to do - toss all that work away when it's going to eventually need to be done permanently anyway?

I agree to let them compete.
