Topic: John Mayer plays the blues on a 335!

I know Mr. Mayer has been a controversial figure on the board lately, so lets let the music speak for itself.  He plays some great blues guitar on his summer tour.

EXCELLENT.

His kind of shows he's doing these days is likely educating the youth on blues music. I doubt many people have heard the original Crossroads or Clapton's version - so when they go to the net to research it, they can broaden their horizons...

Brilliant!  I didn't even look at Crossroads because of close minded ignorance and prejudice.  I've come to hate that song.  But, "Nobody's Bidness" was good.

I heard somebody say that's just old standard blues, nothing special.  My reply is of course:

"If it is so easy, and nothing special, why is it so few can do it right?"  THUMP.

Re: John Mayer plays the blues on a 335!

Honestly, I have to say that John's version of Crossroads I heard Thursday night was one of the best versions I've heard in a live performance, very interesting show with lots of surprises for me, quite different than a year ago...enjoyed his bluesy numbers.  We were away for the weekend and my daughter hasn't uploaded her photos yet, but maybe someone here knows.  John played a beautiful hollow body guitar, unique in that it was the width of a strat, the headstock was more ornate like a PRS and it was different tones of brown in the wood grain...well no matter what it was, John did this tapping thing, the sound was just amazing, he is an excellent guitarist.  He played a larger variety of guitars this show and I thoroughly enjoyed the horn section, actually his whole band was great.

The crowd had more males this time and mixed ages.  I don't claim to be a huge John Mayer fan, but he's earned my respect as an amazing guitarist and he seems appreciative that his fans are riding the wave as he changes musically!!  John even made a little joke about his changes by playing a little tease of your body is a wonderland and then cutting into a newer song, while thanking the fans for accepting him and getting into him playing a Robert Johnson song. (Crossroads)

This is just a personal opinion, no need for anyone to get huffy, I just have not totally acquired a taste for his voice, but that's just me...just a different strokes kinda' thing...  John Mayer can be a good thing for the blues genre.  My daughter already knew Hendrix before she got in to John Mayer, but the two rows of young girls in front of us likely never heard of Axis: Bold As Love before Mayer.  They sang that song with their heart and soul and actually all the young girls around me didn't talk much at all when John came on and stood the entire show and did a little bit of screaming...I think my daughter was actually the biggest screamer, in between songs. wink

Hi Jeff,
I didn't find a youtube from our show, this clip doesn't do it justice at all.  It was kind of jazzed up and more rhythmic... beautiful guitar too.  I can't even believe I did this, I came home and told the hubby his next guitar should be red. wink

Re: John Mayer plays the blues on a 335!

Serious: Rik Emmett is the reason my good friend plays a Framus Ak. But who beside he and my dad has ever heard of Triumph or Rik Emmett?

Light hearted: Why's he playing the Crossroads solos almost exactly how Eric did at the Fillmore in '68?

On a different note, I don't think that's the Clapton 335. The tuners look like Klusons to me, but I may be wrong.

Haha God I love Gary's playing. Good to see the Green Burst getting worked.

They are wise men..

It was from a Emmett play's Clapton Concert. Nothing but Clapton songs, out of honor and respect for Eric Clapton and his music.
