Topic: ZZ Top Live in Texas

You guys have got to check out this DVD. It's pretty freakin' awesome. I haven't gotten a chance to watch the bonus features but overall is a pretty cool concert. An awesome version of Just Got Paid at the end of the show which I know you guys will like...

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

Loved the DVD. I watched the whole show yesterday. ZZ Top is one of those bands that puts on a great live show. Supposedly they are supposed to be doing a smaller sized theater tour during the fall.

The bonus features were also great!

I'm just waiting for the triumphant return of Ms. Pearly Gates!

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

Never will happen. He's retired it to just studio use. Doesn't want to risk it getting stolen.

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

It's been retired for a long time. I know it's been retired since the early 90s, possibly earlier than that.

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

Just thought you should know. I would love to see Pearly too. But I understand what he's thinking. Every guitar he's purchased since that one has been trying to replicate Pearly Gates, and he hasn't found one yet that gets it. Hence the huge collection he's amassed. There's a really huge picture of it in his book Rock And Roll Gearhead.

I probably should have added a smiley to my above post to communicate the joking attitude it was posted in. My bad!

I don't see what in Pearly Billy's trying to replicate with the fuzzy spinning guitars...

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

That's it,  I'm buying it today.  I've watched them slop through stuff here and there, but it never seemed to matter for some reason.  From day one,  I was a Top fan.

Mind you in those days I was listening to more of A ParliaFuncadelicMent Thang than much else except R & B or Funk or BLUES...

If Billy were to answer, he'd say it'd have something to do with humbuckers and going off into the wild blue yonder in experimentation. He's a unique dude.

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

Sounds like it! I'm not a fan of fuzzy guitars, but he's the Reverend, he can do whatever he wants. As far as replicating Pearly, don't you think a Les Paul is a good place to start? And I'm at a loss for why he hasn't collaborated with Gibson on a Pearly replica!

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

Well, you gotta understand, Billy's an experimenter. He'll buy just about anything that has humbuckers in it. Heck, he'll buy just about any guitar. You really should pick up his book Rock And Roll Gearhead. It's got a bunch of pictures of a lot of his guitars, some of them are just flat out there.

Speaking of a Pearly replica, I believe Seymour Duncan has a Pearly Gates pickup that's supposed to be modeled after those in his guitar.

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

I don't see why Billy wouldn't bring it out, it'll be studio.

Re: ZZ Top Live in Texas

It'll most certainly be on the new album, it's been on every single album. But not on tour. Besides, I actually really like the tone Billy gets out of those Billy Bo Gretsch's.
