Hey Jaci...

I just found out about the Lance Lopez gig last night from Shred, but BDS is playing the ACL Sat. afternoon, and Antone's Sat. night.....and I don't wanna miss either one of those, especially Antone's.....I may kiss the floor in there!!

If we need to split in Dallas (BDS vs. Lopez), I'll rent a car to drive to Austin, and whomever wants to go, can.....

I just pulled up Lance Lopez's MySpace, and I'm a little torn myself now.....WTF??  Where have I been????????

That passes the "hair standing up on the back of yer neck" test, big time!!!

I think what's gonna tip the balance for me though is seeing BDS at Antone's.  To me, that's gonna be historical.....

And yeah, I met BDS at Hartwood Acres a couple weeks ago.....but, it might be nice to hang a little without gettin' soaked.....Davey and I were standing in a freakin' downpour.....

Edit:  The birthday gig says "unavailable" from the link on his MySpace page.  Sold out, or just not being sold yet?

Before you kiss the floor at Antone's, keep in mind the current location is not the location where all the history happened. It's moved since the days when The Fab Tbirds were the house band.

You're absolutely right about Outside Woman Blues, Nic.....they nail it, and still manage to put their own stamp on it.....it's incredible.....

They also nail Riding with the King, and a little thang I noticed was they use Hiatt's original lyrics (I guess no white chick is gonna make me crawl), which may be trivial, but I thought it was pretty respectful.....

And they did Almost Cut My Hair when I saw them a couple weeks ago.  I was strolling toward the "facilities" when they started it, and I couldn't shake a "Woodstock" feeling.  Now granted, there was a bit of a "feel good" factor involved, and the crowd was a lot smaller (2-3K), but it just felt like.....I dunno.....like I was witnessing the birth of something much bigger.....they make the hair on the back of me neck stand up.....

This is a definate Hiatt cover, and not a cover of EC and BB. I know John Hiatt is a very big influence on Davy, and have read an interview saying that when he started playing live, that he played with a bunch of older guys(probably his old man and friends) playing John Hiatt covers. Personally I like the John Hiatt version over EC and BB, but both are still good. Saying that though I have seen on elive of BDS on Youtube and that is my fav one of the lot. I've heard them do Ridin' twice and Davy always says heres a song by John Hiatt. Then again it's his habit to inform the crowd who the artist is behind every cover they do. He does so with his painfully shy demeanor as if he's thinkin' OK let's see if I can pull this off, but boy do they nail the covers every time. Last time I saw them I was hangin' out during their soundcheck and asked if they ever covered Crossroads. Davy gave Adam a couple of directions and they launched into it like they'd been doin' it for years. I'll see them next month and I'll see if I can persuade them to add it. I know I'd love to hear a complete version in their setlist.

Sorry but I think Crossroads has been done to death too. Like Joe I'd rather they picked a less well known cover.
Interestingly I noticed that when I saved tracks from Roll Away to my pc Ouside Woman Blues is named as Outside Woman Blues (cover of Cream song).
I think it must have been the decision of the record company to label it like that, as the song was written by Blind "Joe" Reynolds. While undoubtly BDS's version is heavily influenced by the Cream cover, Davey had given recognition to the original songwriter.

I think the bottom line is, BDS treat all their covers with respect, and realize that John Hiatt is a freakin' lyrical genius.....if it ain't broke, don't fix it. 

Great clip you added!  Davey's only been singin' for 2-3 years?  Are you freakin' kidding me??  His singing is as good as his guitar playing!!!!!

To be fair, I have not listened to that one, and I like Davey's voice, but better???

Outside Woman Blues I can see (feel)... any Hiatt stuff,  OK.  BDS' respect for the masters has bumped them up a notch in my book.  I think they'll do well.  I like 'em.

But there are some songs that can never be covered...In my opinion...which ain't even humble.

Yeah, I'll watch them.  I also know it makes a difference that you have met him and talked to him.  That tends to shade our judgement just a tad.  Opinions are good. 

I'm not a huge Crosby fan, myself, but those vocals make that tune.

Michael Bolton covering Percy Sledge?  gag  oh sorry I digress...

...anyway I'll watch them and keep an open mind.

Like many BDS fans it was their music that hooked me. The fact that they are SO young was a draw. You can tell they were exposed to great music as kids. When you watch them it's apparent that they have that unspoken language that a band developes over time. It's a powerful thing. I think they do some very "mature" music. It shows an understanding of the roots of their sound. The point of all this is they are just starting. Davy's voice and guitar skills impress the H out of me. He could have a career as a song writer to top it off.

I can't deny that I feel very maternal and protective of them. Their success has already lead to detractors, as is always the case! I, for one, want to foster their growth. I think they are vulnerable because of their youth. So, I just want everyone to keep that in mind. Their future is wide open. I hope to be a part of it.    Mother Hen Cathy

People sometimes say so n so is a better bass player than you, usually in a well modulated, even tempered discussion of styles.  HAH!  I say, he probably wants it more than me and let them drift on off.  Grain of truth there...Jones logic if you will...inarguable.

Listened to Almost Cut My Hair (Thanks Carl) goose bump material.  I have my own opinions (with my own reasons) from way back still...but GOOD!  On YouTube watched Outside Woman Blues and a coupla others...

You know, Davy sells it.  I feel him when he sings.  Adam is probably more responsible for their sound than one would think at first, along with the drummer, who should def wear his hat on stage.

i KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO SING THAT "...BUY ME A BULLDOG..." and play in a power trio, so props.

Not that my opinion matters, but my BonnaFamily was kind enough to share mp3s, links and so on, so there it is.
