Topic: Le Tour de France 2008

I know that there are at least two of us here who share a passion for this great annual sporting event, even without US contenders!

http://www.letour.fr/2008/TDF/COURSE/us/index.html

I would implore anyone thinking of contributing to this topic to not turn it into a debate about doping! All know 'offenders' (and even some who have never been found guilty of taking anything) have been barred this year. It's a wide-open race.

I usually have favorites for each of the jerseys, but not this year. Right now, I have no idea at all, at least not till the teams name their riders this week. But whatever the names turn out to be, thrills, spectacle and heroism are guaranteed in what is one of the very toughest tests of human endurance in sport.

Re: Le Tour de France 2008

Now we're talking about a REAL SPORT!! 21 days of cycling, over mountains, time trials, each day enough of an effort to kill a mere mortal! Team dynamics, tactics, and individual moments of shear genius!! I remember when you could only get summaries on Wide World of Sports in this country, unless they had to cut it because the previous event ran long. Then it moved to ESPN where they would have a 1/2- 1hr show every day...THEN..."The Outdoor Network" and live coverage! That is now "Versus".

I'm going to watch this year, but with an attitude. I'll be civil and not post my feelings about the "Powers That Be", but a team was not invited because  it's riders were involved with doping last year..so..the entire team was replaced, including the coach and members of the now defunct Discovery Team. American Levi Lipheimer is the current leader of that team. Anyone who doubts his or the teams abilities should look at their year so far!!!

George..there are American contenders, I'll claim any rider on High Road as on an American team! But, thanks for this thread:)           Codependent Cycling junkie, Cathy

I gotta tell you, Dawg, there were few bigger Lance fans than me. I 'spotted' him and decided to follow him when I saw him win the World championship race in the rain on the slippery streets of Oslo in 1993 - a race where only someone who had balls, skill and luck could win. He really impressed me that day!

I was a cycling fan before Lance, then those happy years when 'my' man just kept winning the Tour cool but I'll always stay a fan of the sport, and if you love this sport then there ain't nothing to beat Le Tour!

My suggestion of a possible overall winner only went and stole the first stage! big_smile

Stage 1 - Saturday, July 5: Brest - Plumelec, 197.5km

Viva España! Newly crowned Spanish Champ guns down maillot jaune and stage
By Gregor Brown

Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) fires a warning to his rivals

One week after claiming the Spanish Championships, Alejandro Valverde pounced to win Tour de France stage one and take the leader's maillot jaune in the process. The 28 year-old Caisse d'Epargne rider, winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, chased down Luxembourg's Kim Kirchen (Columbia) in the final 200 metres to finish one second clear of his competition in Plumelec.

"This is a victory for all of the fans who supported me for so many years, and also for the general supporters who just love cycling," the Spaniard exclaimed after claiming his first ever yellow jersey. While he timed the sprint to perfection, Valverde hadn't planned where to start his effort. "I didn't know the finale, I followed Kirchen," he explained.

"This finish suited my abilities perfectly I have no extra pressure now, I have already achieved two of my objectives in this Tour; wearing yellow and winning a stage. Keeping the jersey will be hard because the Tour de France is so long. But I will enjoy it now."

Belgian Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux) and Frenchman Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Telecom) came home second and third. Kirchen held on for fourth over Italian Riccardo Riccò (Saunier Duval-Scott) and Australian Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto).

Lance devotee here too. Man, he made me cry!!! I'm pleased there are 2 American teams Columbia (High Road) which has George Hincapie from the USA and Mark Cavendish, from THE ISLE OF MAN! and Garmin-Chipotle (Sorry TomTom employee) with some names I know..But they are saying that Valverde has been training in the style of Lance....and he's looking really strong. I'll need to see his reps when he's climbing to know if that's true. Only 3 weeks until we know.   O-O   O-O  O-O   O-O O-O    O-O   Cathy

Cavendish is the real deal, and should pick up a stage or 2 when they get into the sprints. I work for a sports betting firm and our cycling guy says he is probably one of the best sprinters out there at the moment, which is big praise. Will have my flag draped around me when I am watching him. He also has big chances to pick up a gold medal at the Olympics. Its a great time to be from the Isle of Man, having a renaissance of talent to gush over currently smile Now we have something over than the TT to talk about when relating the the island smile

Re: Le Tour de France 2008

Stage 2 - Sunday, July 6: Auray - Saint Brieuc, 164.5km
Mighty Thor strikes again

Thor Hushovd of Crédit Agricole brought his career number of Tour stage wins to six on a tough undulating finish to Saint Brieuc. The Norwegian credited his Australian team-mate Mark Renshaw with a perfect lead-out to allow him to take the victory ahead of Team Colombia's duo Kim Kirchen and Gerald Ciolek.

In the overall Spaniard Alejandro Valverde kept his lead. Kirchen is now in second but took the lead in the points classification, while Rabobank's Oscar Freire is in third. Former second-placed rider Philippe Gilbert crashed in the final kilometres. Although the Belgian was awarded the same time as the winner due to the incident, the stage rankings determine the overall placing for the ten riders who are tied on time behind Valverde.

Barloworld's climber Mauricio Soler, who injured his wrist in a crash on stage one survived the stage but was dropped in the fast run-in to the finish, hindered by his injury.

The day was dominated by the breakaway of Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom) and Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis), who took off after they crossed the first côte of the day together. They were later joined by the Agritubel duo of Christophe Moreau and David Le Lay. The four almost stayed away until the finish, but the final three kilometres were uphill. Chavanel was the last to be caught, and was countered by a strong move from CSC-Saxo Bank's Fabian Cancellara. The Swiss rider tried to pull of a repeat of his stage win of last year's Tour, but was caught by Liquigas' Filippo Pozzato. A quick descent ended the pair's time on the front before the sprint for the line.

Another very exciting early stage, which will have pleased the French no end when four French riders spent loads of time in front but then, as usual, got beaten at the end. big_smile Valverde finished very close to the front at the end, he's looking very impressive.

Re: Le Tour de France 2008

Where were you yesterday, Cathy?

Today's absence (till later) is understandable in view of happy family commitments. big_smile

What a day!! Today's stage, which was widely expected to end in a mass sprint, had the sort of climax you often dream about but only rarely get to see - a breakaway group of four that worked hard together for 200 kms and managed to stay out of the clutches of the peloton at the death. The stage was won by the reasonably unknown Frenchman, Demoulin, who narrowly beat the totally unknown American, Billy Frischkorn, and the equally unknown Frenchman, Feillu, with Feillu taking over the yellow jersey from Valverde.

Tomorrow's individual time trial will substantially alter the top 10 places so there's no point in posting them yet.

(Edit - I forgot to mention that today's winner is the shortest man in the field at a mere 5'2")

Stage 3 - Monday, July 7: Saint-Malo - Nantes, 208km
French fantasy: Dumoulin with win and Feillu yellow

By Gregor Brown, Brecht Decaluwé and Shane Stokes in Nantes, with additional reporting by Hedwig Kröner

The Tour de France was treated to a local delight in stage three to Nantes thanks to a four-man escape that produced a stage win by Samuel Dumoulin and new overall leader Romain Feillu. The move that formed at kilometre zero – including USA's William Frischkorn and Italy's Paolo Longo Borghini – concluded the rainy and blustery 208-kilometre stage through France's Brittany with 2'03" on former-race leader Alejandro Valverde's group.

"We got into a good break and we really worked well all day to stay away," stated 27 year-old Dumoulin of Team Cofidis. "It is really a fantastic experience."

Overall classification favourites Italian Riccardo Riccò (Saunier Duval-Scott) and Russian Denis Menchov (Rabobank) lost time in the technical arrival to the likes of Valverde, Evans, Sastre and Cunego. Strong winds forced a split that put their teams to work to limit a gap that counted 38 seconds ton the main GC group in Nantes.

"Perhaps you journalists don't understand that I am not here for the classification," blasted Riccò after the finish. The 24 year-old, winner of two stages and second overall in the Giro d'Italia, indicated the team's work was all for Juan José Cobo. His maillot blanc of best young rider was lost, passing to Feillu.

Re: Le Tour de France 2008

Five of the new top 10 ride for the two American teams! How about that?

Stage 4 - Tuesday, July 8: Cholet - Cholet (ITT), 29.5km

Schumacher's stage victory garners yellow

Evans' hits fellow classification contenders hard

By Gregor Brown, Brecht Decaluwé and Shane Stokes in Cholet

Germany's Stefan Schumacher bettered the cream of the time trialing crop to capture the 29.5-kilometre Tour de France stage around Cholet and move into the race leader's maillot jaune. The 26 year-old Gerolsteiner rider recorded a time of 35'44" that stood against the hammering of Luxemburger Kim Kirchen – second at 35'54" – and Briton's David Millar – third at 36'02".

"It's extraordinary to be on the podium in this jersey," noted the same rider who captured the pink leader's jersey of the Giro d'Italia in 2006 by winning stage three. "Because this is the Tour de France and everybody dreams of wearing this jersey. Also, the moment on the podium, you see it 1,000 times on television and then you're there yourself, it's impossible to imagine."

Team Silence-Lotto's Cadel Evans delivered a blow in the windy Loire countryside side to his fellow general classification rivals. He finished third place, 27 second back on Schumacher, but more important was the distance he put on competitors like Denis Menchov (Rabobank), Christian Vande Velde (Garmin Chipotle - H30), Stijn Devolder (Quick Step), Damiano Cunego (Lampre), Andy Schleck (CSC-Saxo Bank) and Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne). He put seven seconds into Menchov, around a minute into Cunego and Schleck, and 1'07" on Valverde.

"It is a good start but it is a long, long way to Paris," said Evans in a media scrum. "In my mind this is the first appointment for the GC favourites. So far so good. Super Besse will be the next big showing for the GC riders."

Overall standings:

1. Stefan Schumacher (Germany/Gerolsteiner) 4 hours, 4 minutes, 41 seconds

2. Kim Kirchen (Luxembourg/Team Columbia) +12 secs

3. David Millar (Britain/Garmin Chipotle) +12 secs

4. Cadel Evans (Australia/Silence-Lotto) +21 secs

5. Fabian Cancellara (Switzerland/Team CSC Saxo Bank) +33 secs

6. Christian Vandevelde (United States/Garmin Chipotle) +37 secs

7. George Hincapie (United States/Team Columbia) +41 secs.

8. Thomas Lovkvist (Sweden/Team Columbia) +47 secs

9. Vincenzo Nibali (Italy/Liquigas) +58

10. Ivan Gutierrez (Spain/Caisse d'Epargne) + 1:01 secs

Re: Le Tour de France 2008

I'm watching George, more than once a day I must admit. This is turning out to be a very entertaining tour. I'm very proud of both American teams and predict great things over the weeks to come. Can't wait for Friday..I love the mountain stages! Viva La Tour! O-O O-O Cathy

Re: Le Tour de France 2008

GO CAVENDISH!!! YEAH Isle of Man!!! What an exciting stage. The sprint at the end was a nail biter!! Of course I'm happy! The American teams are in 1st and 2nd place. This tour is different for me. I had no pre-race favorite for the overall winner. Yet, I'm enjoying each stage as an individual race, as it should be. Tomorrow the mountains!!!  Cathy O-O

Re: Le Tour de France 2008

What a fantastic finish with that poor French escaper getting caught literally 10 yards from the line. I was hoping he would hang on because I'm always for the guys who dare to jump out front and then hope that they can stay there. big_smile

Re: Le Tour de France 2008

Go on the MANX MAN!!!! Love it!!!

He is a true talent, and will be competing in the indoor racing at the Olympics, and has a very good shot at Gold, and pretty sure he would be the first Manxman to do that at the Olympics.

Lets all rise for the Manx National Anthem in honour smile

ENGLISH VERSION.
1. O LAND of our birth,
O gem of God's earth,
O Island so strong and so fair ;
Built firm as Barrool,
Thy throne of Home Rule
Makes us free as thy sweet mountain air.

2. When Orry, the Dane,
In Mannin did reign,
'Twas said he had come from above;
For wisdom from heav'n
To him had been giv'n
To rule us with justice and love.

3. Our fathers have told
How Saints* came of old,
Proclaiming the Gospel of Peace ;
That sinful desires,
Like false Baal fires,
Must die ere our troubles can cease.

4. Ye sons of the soil,
In hardship and toil,
That plough both the land and the sea,
Take heart while you can,
And think of the Man
Who toiled by the Lake Galilee.

5. When fierce tempests smote
That frail little boat,
They ceased at His gentle command ;
Despite all our fear,
The Saviour is near
To safeguard our dear Fatherland.

6. Let storm-winds rejoice,
And lift up their voice,
No danger our homes can befall;
Our green hills and rocks
Encircle our flocks,
And keep out the sea like a wall.

7. Our Island, thus blest,
No foe can molest ;
Our grain and our fish shall increase
From battle and sword
Protecteth the Lord,
And crowneth our nation with peace.

8. Then let us rejoice
With heart, soul, and voice,
And in the Lord's promise confide;
That each single hour
We trust in His power
No evil our souls- can betide.

Awesome work Mark!!!
