Topic: 08/08/08 The Olympics

I couldn't let this historic event pass without comment. Swimmer Dana Torres qualified for her 6th Olympic tonight at the age of 41!! I'm partial to swimming (unlike Joe). Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff are Marylanders and both set world records during the trials.

First the Tour de France..then the Olympics...now we're talking about some REAL sports!! :-) Cathy

Screw the Olympics, the entire Asian population is already lining up at the casinos out here for what is considered the luckiest day of the millenium.

A 41 year old Olympic swimmer must be a first! What an amazing achievement.

Incidentally, we have a nice date tomorrow in European date notation - 06/07/08.

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

Bicycle motocross (BMX) is an olympic sport this year. I asked in a previous post if anyone here used to or still does race which was pretty much responded to as nay. I raced from 1979-84, then have been away from the sport ever since. I attended a national event in Pittsburgh last weekend and was amazed at the talent these guys and girls have. If you get a chance to see some racing during the O games I urge you to check it out.

Tell me about the car i saw parked outside your door ? Tell me what you left me waiting two or three hours for ? Tell me why when the phone rings, baby, your up and across the floor ? Please dont keep me wondering no more.....

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

AND THEY'RE OFF!! What a show!!! Any wayPLEASE..If you are posting about results, please state that first as we are in so many different time zones around the globe. Some may not want to know results...I don't care if it seems corny to some. I love the Olympics. I wish you could pick the events you'd like to watch! Road cycling at 11pm my time, but I can't find coverage anywhere sad     May there be peace.      Cathy

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

Everyone around here is very excited about the Olympics as Shawn Johnson (gymnast)  and Lolo Jones (track) are from our backyard.   Several others from Iowa but these two are close.
Fingers & toes crossed for both of them. smile

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

Wow Cathy, this road race is truly something awesome to see!! With 40 km still to go, the pack is being led by two Tour winners, Contador and Sastre!!!!! Never seen anything like it before - nor have any of us seen a circuit like this before - around, through and over the Great Wall.

This has been a stunning race so far, one that anybody could still win. It's very odd that there aren't thousands of people along the way, just incredible scenery.

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

OH.............MY...................GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone with any interest in TOP sport should not miss the highlights of today's absolutely sensational men's road race. The Dutch commentator, who has been covering cycling for decades, was virtually at a loss for words at the end, after the riders had been on their saddles for nearly 6hrs. 30 mins!!

Not only was the race itself utterly awesome, it was played out against a backdrop of the Great Wall, some of the most stunning scenery on earth!! I won't spoil it for you, Cathy, I'll just advise you to keep a towel handy. big_smile

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

For Cathy - and Maryland. wink

Phelps opens with Olympic record

Michael Phelps's bid to make Olympic history got off to the perfect start as he set a new Games record in winning his heat in the 400m individual medley.

The 23-year-old American is aiming to win eight gold medals in Beijing and beat Mark Spitz's record of seven golds set in 1972.

He cruised into Sunday's final with a time of four minutes 7.82 seconds.

Second fastest after the heats was Hungarian Laszlo Cseh, with Italian Luca Marin third fastest.

However, fellow American Ryan Lochte remains one of Phelps's biggest threats, despite only qualifying as fourth fastest.

Phelps, who won six golds in Athens four years ago, was keen to lay down a marker and was inside his own world record pace after the initial breaststroke stage and at halfway was half a second inside the world best.

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

I can't believe the stabbing that happened yesterday. So sad and so wrong... how can someone do such a thing? This is the worst thing that could have happened this year. The Chinese try to make everyone feel at home and put on a good show (which they have so far) and two Americans get attacked on the first day. I feel sorry for all the people who worked so hard to make everything perfect... and also to the family and friends of the victims. May everything go smoothly from now on.

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

It's been a great day for the USA, GB and Holland! If you don't want to see any spoilers then do NOT scroll down. Still to come in a couple of hours from now is the Holland vs. USA football game, which I shall be watching live.

The ladies road race, which took place in pouring rain, was not won by the Dutch favorite, but by the English rider, Cooke. Most noteworthy for me about this race was the participation of Jeannie Longo, 49 year old (yes, 49!) French ex world champion, riding in her seventh Olympics. Truly astonishing.

Phelps won his first gold with a truly remarkable world record, though this was hardly surprising.

Finally, the Dutch ladies 4x100m relay team took the first Dutch relay gold since 1936, which was certainly a major achievement!

Re: 08/08/08 The Olympics

SUNDAY RESULTS.....

Jason Lisak (the Captain of the American swimming team)  is my new hero! What an exciting men's 4x100 relay!! The French talked alot of smack prior to this race...final legs were WAY ahead of world record pace, and then Jason ran down the French world champion to out touch for GOLD! For Michael Phelps that's 2 down and 6 to go!!!   Cathy

That is the most exciting race in water that I've ever seen! I was watching from a prone position, but literally sprang up to the edge of the sofa during that last leg...wow!
