Topic: New from UK, Bassman in Classic Rock Band

Hi Everyone,

I'm a U.K. bass player in a rehearsing blues based classic rock band.We are playing Rory Gallagher, Free, ZZ Top, Neil Young ,Pink Floyd ,Cream and Joe Bonamassa.In fact we are playing the music that Joe says influenced him when he started.We all have 'the gift of time' but my drummer was out on the road supporting Yes in Europe in the Sixties when I was in short trousers, so that makes me feel a bit better !

I first heard Joe on Planet Rock DAB in the U.K. this year, Nicky Horne plays JB a lot in the evenings.After hearing JB on a brilliant live radio broadcast in Maida Vale UK my band went to see him at Frome, at the Cheese and Grain.It was a great concert, a great sound and it was very noticable that some original album material had been worked on ,improved and polished in the live performance and some great parts added , for example the rythmic section in Bridge to Better Days.I saw Joe pacing around backstage just before the gig, looking a little more nervous than he needs to be, with his playing !

We are doing four JB numbers in our set.

We love playing these tracks .Everyone who has heard them loves them and we always credit Joe ,point them to the albums and promote Joe's live gigs.The Colston Hall Bristol is going to be a sell out for sure.I'm looking forward to the new Live album , I take it this is from the 2008 tour ?? I haven't worked my way through the site threads yet. Are we the first band to cover JB?

We won't be the last that's for sure.

Welcome Crossroads! Not sure how many bands actively push Joes material but he has a huge following from band members around the UK certainly - Definately a musicians musician! Great forum too, very friendly and lots of Bonabuddies meet up at the various gigs around the world. My friend Michael Lynch seems to have the lead on the rest of us when it comes down to shows attended - He passed 50 shows and was givena bottle of SLoe Gin by Joe for that acheivement. Get to meet Joe if you can, a nicer chap is hard to find. Bogie, Carmine, Rick are gems too, not to mention Joe's guitar tech Dave, Bogie drum tech Aaron and of course the tour manager Jay who handles the sound desk for Joe. A great bunch of guys - really looking forward to seeing them all on Monday in Liverpool!

Welcome to the forum Crossroads...mm a bass player. At last an ally for Big Jeff in this family of guitar players!
Glad to hear that you cover some of Joe's songs. Somebody else who doesa the same is Chantel McGregor. I saw her play recently and she did Had To Cry Today, ANDY, Mountain Time and she does Miss You Hate You too.
I take it you're from down South of the country whereas Chantel is from Bradford.

Thanks for the warm welcome , especially from all you guitarists.This may make you musos chuckle and especially Big Jeff - When my band went to see Joe at the Cheese and Grain the guitarist went off with my son for a pint at the bar before the show leaving me with the drummer - I bet the drummer that before Bonnamassa had played three numbers the guitarist would say "that isn't difficult I could do that"

Before the notes to Joe's opener 'Bridge To Better Days' had died away , ,the guitarist taps me on the shoulder and shouts ,"That isn't very hard , I could play that."

The drummer and I sank to the floor, helpless with laughter.

AHHHHH guitarists.... love 'em.

Love it!  My brother is Mr. Guitar and he tells more guitar player jokes than anyone...walked into the local bucket of blood and tears one night and I turned to him and said, "There's a lot of Caucasians in here." 

He said "Most of them are guitar players."
"How can you tell?"
"Look at all the guys standing around with legs spread and arms folded...squinting at the poor SOB on stage..."
