i gotta say i'm a fan of open g quite abit. whenever i tune my guitars to open g, i always have to play brown sugar and honky tonk woman by the stones.

Re: favorite open tuning songs

I actually just finished learning Watch Over You by Alter Bridge.  First song I learned was Go Blues/Allman Brothers  and then Walking Blues-Clapton.

Re: favorite open tuning songs

i like open e and open g  for really slide only- the first song i learned in open e was little martha cuz i thought it was one of the coolest and most beautiful songs ever written. i only use open g for in my time of dying and if i had pocession over judgement day.  all other slide playing i use in open e - its fun to experiment and makes slide playin a hell of a lot easier - IDK how Warren Haynes does it lol.

The River is in open F, and the live version of Burning Hell...

Re: favorite open tuning songs

How bout "Dust My Broom" in open E; there's another one.

Re: favorite open tuning songs

I've never played slide, so I'm trying to learn in a few days, for when I play with this crazy, taskmaster bass player I know this Saturday wink tongue . I have my guitar tuned to open E when I'm learning...man, this slide thing does not come natural for me, and I've been playing forever! I'm trying to play "Done Somebody Wrong" and I'm butchering it...
It probably doesn't help that I have pretty low action on all my guitars, and I don't feel like changing it.

Anybody have any slide tips??? I know, I know...raise the action...any other tips, I only have a few more days...

Re: favorite open tuning songs

....I'm gonna say it anyway. Raise the action. It'll take you 15 minutes to do, and it'll make slide at least 64.8% easier. Play with the slide on whatever finger is easiest for you. Make sure not to let the notes that you play ring out, you've got to stop each one before playing the next one.

Re: favorite open tuning songs

Raising the action is easier. or just have a cheaper guitar all ready and always tuned to open

Or if you're loaded find yourself one of those Gibson Robot guitars.

Re: favorite open tuning songs

Line 6 guitar has a preset that electronically changes the tuning to open tuning while leaving the strings in 440. It's the weirdest thing.

My brother can't play slide either and he can play with ANYBODY and has.  He just plays what he hears, as close as he can get it on that LP you saw.  with distortion, of course.  He says if he ever decides to play slide, it's gonna be a second guitar.

I'm amazed that you would try and learn that in so short a time.  You must be as psychotic as that lunatic bassman you mention.  You probably deserve one another. big_smile

Muting.......... Use your right palm while you are picking or finger picking, unless you are left handed then the opposite would be true, to mute the strings you don't want to ring out. You can also use the "spare" fingers of your left hand behind the slide for muting and adding single notes. Without muting it becomes a horrid symphony of notes you don't really want to hear & not very pleasant to the ear.... Not easy....takes lots of practice....Still learning myself......Good luck...Pete

yeah, the muting really is the key to making it sound clean. I don't even have to think about muting when I play without the slide, it just comes naturally. This type of muting is a bit of a learning curve, as is the vibrato (even tougher).

Re: favorite open tuning songs

I got a cheap but great sounding Samick with Duncans that I use for slide only.  The action is higher and it has a stop tail piece so that altering tunings is easier.

I had the hardest time doing things in open tunings...E, G maybe a rare Emin.  I tend to do everything in std.  It's harder but I can do it.  Derek Trucks plays everything...even non slide songs in open E

Re: favorite open tuning songs

I wouldn't resist open tunings, it's easier once you get a hold of it. It's harder initially but if you keep on with slide you'll find that there are several instances where you cannot play what's recorded in standard tuning.
