Topic: Davy Knowles in the August "Guitar Player" Magazine

Hot off the phone with this report from our friendly Cali Postman, Shred, who had a copy in his hands. Sadly, he had to put it in a patron's mail box, but he wanted me to let everybody know.

To those that think I should have put this under another of the BDS threads...well..sorry....Cathy

Re: Davy Knowles in the August "Guitar Player" Magazine

One more topic on BDS and we might just have to start their own catagory. We'll have OTHER ARTISTS and under that BACK DOOR SLAM.:)

They need to link it from their site. I do hope for their sake they have a youger fanbase than us oldies here. The guys are 10 years younger than Joe. So for their career to last they need to pick up some twentysomethings along the way.

I had a discussion with a fellow forum member recently and some of it was the etiquette do's and don'ts that may exist in other forums. The rules are pretty simple here. Sometimes you got to just start a new topic. Other forums would insist you search and place the post in the right topic and if it wasn't give you forty atacks from various keyboards around the world.

One long BDS thread with all new developments would be rather long. Joe doesn't mind the talk about BDS in fact he doesn't mind sharing his fans or forum.

Until I see them live I can't wholeheartily jump on the band wagon. I like the Youtube stuff and think Davy has a lot going for him. When I think of three piece acts in the past that I will measure them against they have a real tall order to impress.

Grand Funk Early 70's
ZZ Top Mid 70's
Stray Cats 80's
SRV  circa 1990 yes I know they were seasoned pros by then
Joe B. circa 2002 eclipsed all before them
LLB I know Phil you aren't a fan but they had something going. They are a show.
BDS' 2008????????

It will give me good reason besides Joe's lesson to go out and pick up a copy of GW. I wouldn't be surprised if BDS keeps it in perspective. They seem to be very humble and almost surprised by their run of success.
Shred I'm glad you're not my mailman proof reading my magazines subscriptions.

I will be catching them in Dallas this fall. I'll report back and let you know if I will be joining the bona-masses for BDS support group.

Jim, when I saw them recently there were 20-30 18 y/o's up against the fence that knew every word to every song.  I doubt that was just a fluke here.  They have a young following, not just us.....ahem....."mature" fans.....

And they belong in that list you made.....near the top.  That's how good they are.

See ya in Dallas buddy.....just so's I can say "Told ya!!"

They are the real deal. There's only been one band in the last 5 years that has excited me more (guess who?).
I saw ZZ Top open for Billy Preston & Deep Purple in 1973 (?)....yeah, they're that good.

I think your suggestion may be a good idea Jim. While I really do like Back Door Slam and think they are worthy of all the success and praise they have been given, I feel that the other artists forum is a good place to learn about other artists who have not has the exposure that BDS have. Personally I have put posts about other artists that have sank without a trace due to numerous posts on more established artists.

Back Door Slam do have their own forum site, which can be found at:

http://backdoorslam.proboards102.com/index.cgi

I know some of our regulars such as Geoff, Libby, Jeff and Jane have posted on there. I think it would be nice for BDS to get some more postings on their site from the guys on here. They do seem to have quite a few twenty somethings on their forum. In the past I have raised subjects on their about BDS playing at Buddys and Davey's phone conversation with Gerry McAvoy, which have fallen on deaf ears, which I think is partly due to the youthfulness of the forum members there (not that I'm too old at 32!).
Besides it would be nice for Back Door Slam to read some of the praise that members of this forum feel for them!

After the Kimmel appearance my 24 year old came home and asked me if I had heard of them. Which dissapointed him he thought he had scooped me on them. He had downloaded the album from I-tunes after seeing them. I thought it encouraging for BDS for him to have been impressed but I didn't know if it was just because he grew up on SRV, KWS, Hendrix, and Joe B. So he has the DNA to like BDS unlike his peers.

I guess my point is more the whole package. I know and can tell Davey is special. But are the other guys really in the same class as Dusty and Frank, or for that matter Kenny and Eric. Not to mention the other trios listed. Is the rythum section that good?

I saw ZZ Top open for Neil Young around that time.

Thanks Greenose I was looking to see if they had a forum. It was easy to find on their site. The activity there seems on par with Joe's forum 6 years ago. I would agree that keeping that board interesting would do them a service.

I still don't have a problem with their common fans keeping in touch here too.

Re: Davy Knowles in the August "Guitar Player" Magazine

When and if anybody does go to their site..you will see Joe Bonamassa's name all over the place. And, when any of us have seen/met them, we do so as "Joe" fans. The way I see it, this symbiotic relationship is a win win. Like I said before..BDS andf Joe are really on the same team..BluesRock...and I see them as 2 generations, even though they are only 10 yrs apart.
When I saw them in Baltimore I think it was a 21 and over show. There were many young people there who knew all the words to the songs..very impressive! The group that were my friends are already Joe fans. So, the more young people are exposed to the new blues the better for all!!                            Cathy

Sorry to disagree with you, but when I go to see them, I will see them as a BDS fan. While I am a big fan of Joe, I would say I am a specifically a fan of this genre of music - blues rock.
I agree fully with your second sentiment though - the more people that enjoy this typpe of music and the younger they are, the better the future for the genre! smile

Jim, I think I originally got YOU to listen to LLB. At first I liked their sound and their story but once I realized that they had been thrust to the top (not what you know but who you know) and that they were a bunch of jerks that turned out to be essentially one hit wonders.......I decided they weren't for me. We've seen them live a few times and it becomes apparent they aren't all that.

BDS at this point just doesn't do it for me. I wish the lads well and welcome anyone that can assist in bringing life to the genre.

It amuses me when I read some of the things being posted here in praise of BDS. Someone wrote not long ago that one of their songs was so good that Clapton wishes he'd have written it. I understand enthusiasm but that might be a bit over the top.

Maybe (like jim m) a live show will help me get there. I'll be at the HOB Dallas show as well and can probably understand better then.

Re: Davy Knowles in the August "Guitar Player" Magazine

Phil,

I've seen BDS 3 times just since last Nov. The venues and the crowds get bigger each time. You really need to experience these guys live to completely get it. At each show I look around the room and see a captivated bunch of faces. They grab peoples attention much like what I saw Joe do in Monterey Sat. You can spot the newbies with that slack-jawed look.
