Ok, Ok, I get it!  (I do fit between the 100 and 200 mile stipulation.)  Really, I was planning on staying for Chris all along!  I wouldn't want my dad to bust an eardrum on top of all his other maladies, so I'll get my parents safely home...and then I'll head back for Chris.  Can't wait!

Donna.....tryin' to get me to kiss and tell.....shame on you!!!

Hey Don.....I ain't no spring chicken either!!  I got in at the crack of dawn, and figured I could get a few hours sleep this morning.  But a guy across the street decided that bright and early he was gonna tear out his concrete driveway.  With a jackhammer.  (God, make it stop!!!)  He has no idea how lucky he is that I don't own a gun!!

I may feel like crap, but I still gots a smile on my face!!  I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.....the show was that good.....

I didn't get a chance to talk to Dean, as he was nice enough to give Melissa a chance to see the show whilst he watched the kids.  But she and I both agreed.....you can't compare JB with Chris because their styles are so different.  But Chris is absolutely perfect in the niche he's created.

btw, I'm not certain how long the show was, but they started pretty much on time, around 8.....and it was near midnight when they were carrying their gear up the outside steps from the new cellar venue.  You gotta see THAT sadistic set of steps!!  I carried Benny's stool up, and considered asking for oxygen at the top!!  (they are planning to put in a conveyor, though...)

O'Malley's is gonna quickly become a hot destination for great acts:

Fri.  7/18  Smokin' Joe Kubek w/ B'nois King (great, great band...saw 'em on the BluesCruise...)

Fri.  8/1  Walter Trout

Fri.  8/29  Ana Popovic

Sat.  8/9 or 9/5  Tinsley Ellis (still needs to be confirmed)

One thang though.....eat before you go.  The national energy crisis could be overcome by squeezing the oil outta their french fries.....

I'm gonna cross check that schedule with Moondog's, since I'm pretty sure they'll overlap.  But I'm gonna try to see Walter Trout at both gigs.  Seein' him twice in 3 days is another memory in the making.....

Re: Chris Duarte...

Been into Duarte since I heard Texas Sugar & Tailspin cd's.   All this talk makes me miss the Burgh, haven't been back since 97; imagine it's really changed;  Rythum & Blues always been big in Steel Town.

Ya know, I saw SRV & Jeff Beck duel back and forth on the late 80's tour; less than 3000 people at the show; unreal.

Hey Z.....some thangs change, but the people don't.  Nice to hear you still got Burgh blood coursin' through yer veins!!

I think I've seen the video of that Beck/SRV exchange.  I gave the point to SRV, but I may be a bit biased.....

After the show on Friday, Chris thanked me for comin' to see them again.  I told him I was a sucker for a great Texas shuffle, so he said he'd add a few more next time!!

I can't mention it enough.....he's just a really special guy, and musician.....as are Joel and Ben.....

Re: Chris Duarte...

SRV, Ya know I have most Duarte's cd's and that Japan dvd, kinda poor picture quality but he plays up a storm.

Curt Novak did some handwounds for Duarte's 63 I think,  a couple years back.  Triggered me to give him a call and order couple set of pups; way different than anything I have ever heard.

I heard the JB/SRV tour was going to come out on a dvd, Jimmie Vaughn had something to do with it; that will be a good one.  I can still see them doing FK's Goin Down. I have a few SRV bootlegs, Daytona is the best.

Wife & I from Westmoreland Co.  I grew up in Irwin, and wife out near Mt Pleasant.   WE still watch all Steeler & Pens games and even all the daily burgh sports programming on direct tv; even all the high school games believe it or not.

I saw alot of shows at Syria Mosque, are ya old enough to remember that great place?

Irwin ya say, huh??  I grabbed an apt. above Angelo's after I divorced in 2000!!  I'm in White Oak now.  Small world, buddy.....

Saw a TON at the Syria Mosque!  (I'm 56, btw...)  Roy Buchanan, Little Feat, Procul Harem.....and countless others that I can't remember at the moment.....after all, it was the 70's.....

Saw SRV at a little joint on Liberty.....The Staircase, I think.  At the time, I wasn't aware of the magnitude.  If I get to Austin in Sept. and see his statue, I'll have to apologize.....

I didn't say nothin' to Chris as far as SRV comparisons, but it's pretty obvious that that boy has an open channel.....must be a Texas thang.....

Nice that you still watch the sports feeds from here, especially the high school games.  I could go into how many great NFL players came outta this area, but that's a whole other thread!!

Re: Chris Duarte...

Duarte can play his butt off. His newest is really good. And, one time I was talking to him after a show, and we got around to Joe, and he said point blank, "I think what Joe is doing is great. He just needs to keep growing."

Re: Chris Duarte...

What does he mean by that Deez. His fanbase? If so then he is taking Duarte's advice. I just wonder what Chris thinks he should do.

Re: Chris Duarte...

I think he was talking musically moreso than fanbase. I got the impression that he thought Joe wasn't fully formed yet, but was definitely on the right track.

Re: Chris Duarte...

Chris Duarte, July 11, 2008, Warsaw, Indiana

Just like Roy said, Chris was ready to take the stage at his announced 9pm starting time.  I don't know a single song by him, but due to the flattering write ups and especially Jim (SRV's) "rocks in yer head" comment, I knew I had to see him.  He opened strong, he introduced his band...drummer Chris, and bass player, Joelle?  (or Joe L.?), he swung that ponytail outta its scrunchie a dozen times throughout the night.  He joked about the humidity and how at his last show in a "dry heat," his hair was well-behaved and "flowing!"  Clearly the Midwest summer night was wreaking frizz- havoc on those locks, but that didn't stop Chris and his band from delivering the goods to a small, but appreciative crowd who whooped and hollered after every bluesy rock, Texas shuffle, or blistering fretwork solo.  He played for less than 2 hrs, including his 1-song encore,  but that may have had something to do with an 11 pm city curfew or something like that.

Of course Chris stuck around to sign autographs, while his bandmates cleared the stage.  We stopped first, to talk to the drummer, the other Chris, about his wooden-rimmed snare.  My brother is a drummer too, and wanted to ask him about this piece of equipment.  Chris said the rim was worn and he'd be getting rid of it shortly.  We told him to sell it on ebay!  My bro said he'd bid.  My rock-goddess sis-in-law kept talking, pretty much non-stop, and said something to the drummer about me knowing so much about the band....???  whatever!  (can you say, too many spiked red bulls?), and so when I got a chance to ask drummer Chris how long he'd been with the Duarte group, he said, "Well, tonight was my first gig with Chris!"  It was hilarious, because as a trio they were pretty, darn tight.  And he looked comfy up there, and the 3 of them looked and sounded like they knew each other's styles and played together well.  Then when talking to Joelle, the bass player, I mentioned that he'd only been with the band for about a month, right?  He looked surprised that I knew and I just pointed to my Bonamassa Blues Rock Est.1977 shirt and said, "I've got my sources, buddy!"

During the entire show, someone was filming w/ a video camera, from onstage, just offstage, in front of the stage...pretty much EVERYWHERE I WANTED TO BE! So I asked the event coordinator how I could get up close for a few shots....  The stage had been chained off and there were plenty of empty folding chairs in what I referred to as Gold Circle Seating.  Turns out those were the reserved seats for the sponsors of this "free to the public" show.  While chatting up the gal in charge, I found out my brother delivered her baby, so she not only let me have access for photos, but she said our small group of 3 could enter the Gold Circle.....THANKS, Janelle!   Everyone who was still there for Chris' encore pretty much went right up to the stage anyway.  I thought that was a nice finish for him.

Meeting Chris was great fun, too.  Again...sis-in-law...blab, blab, blab smile...I bought a CD, Chris was ripping into it to sign it for me, I handed my camera to that guy who'd been filming, who it turns out travels with the band.  When I asked him, Arthur was his name, when the footage would be on youTube, he said a year!  I guess he's got a lot to upload!  Anyway, Arthur was nice enough to snap a pic of the rock-goddess, Chris and I, after Chris hopped up on the table he had been signing at, turned around and leaned back to get between us.  I told Chris I heard about him on the Joe Bonamassa board...again, pointing to my t-shirt, and he smiled and said, "Oh yeah!"  And of course, he remembered you, SRV!  Said you'd been in Pittsburgh too.   How does he DO that??

Great fun.  Great music.  Great guy

Sacre bleu.....wadda review!!

Very nicely done, Donna.....almost made me feel like I was there.  And to me, that's what a review should be.....not just a set list, but a description of the whole experience.....

I'm really glad you were able to make it.....(nudge, nudge...)

A new drummer??  That boy goes through band members like I go through garlic!!  Benny (the drummer I saw...) had told me something about a scheduling conflict with him and the tour, so maybe Chris just had Chris #2 fill in for a while.....

The bass player's name is Joel (pronounced Jo...L)  You know how them musician types are!  Glad you got to talk to him.....he's a great guy with a GREAT sense of humor.....

btw, you sure Arthur's name wasn't Aura?  He's the only one that I saw that traveled with the band.  Kinda like road manager, videographer, sound man, fight breaker-upper.....

I'm sure the shortened length of the show was due to the curfew.....I think Chris would play all day if you'd let him.....

<<How does he DO that??>>

Beats the hell outta me, Donna.....I can't remember where I put my glasses half the time.  But that's one of the thangs that makes him special, to me anyway.  He truly appreciates the fans.....just like Joe.....

Thanks for the compliments, Jim, and all the additional info.  Yes, Chris, Chris#2 , and Joel smile were all very personable and funny...and, oh yeah....TALENTED!

I asked "Arthur" if there was someone named Aura with the band, cuz I thought what you just said!, and he pointed to the stage which was being cleared off and said Aura was up there.
