Topic: One Word....: GAS

Come one come all to this wonderful thread meant to help you express your frustration over increasing gas prices. I put my foot down 3 weeks ago and started riding my bike wherever possible. The benefits? Besides the obvious, a free tan, some cardio, and I don't have to spend money to make money going to work! Although I fear I will have to fill up today to the tune of $70, which to some people is hardly anything! I've been riding past the same gas stations every time I work, watching those prices slowly rise, until by the end of the summer I'm sure I'll be seeing $5.00's everywhere!

Come here, post your grievances, discuss your frustrations, and share your pain.

Re: One Word....: GAS

It's terrible here Danny.  'Twas $4.95 (premium) when I left for Ohio on the 13th.  Prices were noticeably lower while in Ohio (about $4.30 - I think).  I haven't allowed myself to look since getting home late night before last.

I'll mention the airlines and how much they are struggling because of the gas prices too.  They're dinging the customers left and right with charges for 'extras' in order to stay afloat.  My second bag ran an extra $25, and, I was told that if I wanted to change my seat location over the phone prior to the flight, that would be another $15.  It was free at the counter.  Of course meals went out the door years ago, but now there aren't even free peanuts.  A seat and a soda, that's what the ticket will getcha these days.

Tomorrow we'll drive to Tempe - four hours and who knows which piece of the family jewels I'll have to pawn to get there and back.  Of course, it's all for Joe, so, it's worth EVERY PENNY and then some!!!

Re: One Word....: GAS

I got a Honda Insight hybrid that gets 58 MPG. It makes a Prius look like a gas guzzler. I drive a lot. Sometimes 1000 miles in one weekend. In Michigan, gas is around $4.19. There's a special gas tax here. These little Insight two seater cars can go for less than $10k if you can find em. Mine was a '01 and got for $8k!

I'm really wondering how truckers are doing this and the price of everything else hasn't skyrocketed...

The US should go back to the railway system. "Last year, major freight railroads in the United States moved a
ton of freight an average of 436 miles on each gallon of fuel."

Re: One Word....: GAS

It's the old you can pay me now or pay me later saying. I was only letting my tank get down to the 3/4 mark , then only having to put approx. $20.00 in. After the 170 mile round trip to see Joe in Canton, and then the 100 mile r.t. to Hartwood Acres to see Back Door Slam plus some local running around, It was time to fill er' up to the tune of $56.50. OUCH !!!
I was talking to Dean in Canton and he mentioned he has a hybrid. Just wondering how many of you have one and your thoughts on them ?

Tell me about the car i saw parked outside your door ? Tell me what you left me waiting two or three hours for ? Tell me why when the phone rings, baby, your up and across the floor ? Please dont keep me wondering no more.....

WOWSER Nic!!!  58 MPG!!!  It would have been less expensive for me for me to FOLLOW the boys back to California in your car than to fly!!!

And Nic, THAT'S a LOT of driving you're doing!  1000 miles a weekend??!!!  And you couldn't come to Canton for a FREE SHOW??!!!  Tsk, tsk!!!  Bad boy Nic!  I am sorry that I didn't get to meet you though.  We all had a GREAT TIME - meeting, and sharing JOE!!!  Next time.  And, YOU'RE drivin'!!!

We have a Ford Escape Hybrid (SUV) that gets 34MPG in city and 30MPG on the highway. We weren't looking for a new car, but our Dodge Durango was killing us on gas.  I think was only getting 13MPG.  It was tough to give up our Durango, but the gas is soooo much better in the Escape Hybrid.

Take care-

Dean

Re: One Word....: GAS

Things could be worse.

I drove thru Canada on my way to Motown on Monday. Gas prices along the highways in CA were around $1.33 CDN/liter so that works out to over $5.00/gal. I think our Canadian friends are coming south of the border to fill up. Luckily I get reimbursed 25 cents/mile for gas. I was in Germany a couple of weeks ago, 1.55 euros/liter so that works out to around $9.00/gal.  The taxi driver who picked us up at Frankfurt Airport said he only drives 200km/h on the autobahn now instead of 240 because the gas is so expensive.

Oh my God - I´m rolling on the floor right now, because of all the laughing! "Oh you know, I´ll just drive 200 km/h instead of 240 km/h now, because the gas is so expensive" - lol , oh gosh that was funny!! Tsts, the Germans ....

No honestly, don´t complain about $5.00/gal, we still got around 9.00 around here in Europe. I love my bike big_smile .

Re: One Word....: GAS

I know this is sorta irrelevant, but I just came back to my office with my carry-out lunch.
There were a few people in line paying $1.69 for a 16 ounce bottled water!
That works out to $13.52 per gallon...for WATER!!! Makes gas seem cheap by comparison.

I'm sure that made everybody feel better about the gas prices, right?

Is the Water 4 Gas thing for real? Has anyone tried it? I'd be willing to if I could do it myself...

If you want my opinion its a question of energy & physics. The water gets combined with electricity so it can burn the hydrogen. It takes energy to do this so its a matter where that's coming from and how. Plus some claim it can run on just water, but the people doing it combine it with gas. So combining hydrogen with gas can improve combustion, but can it reduce the amount of gas used?

I'm thinking it would be more popular if it worked instead of being on a couple shady websites. Wouldn't it solve the gas crisis it if worked? It would then create a water crisis, lol. Just like ethanol is creating a corn crisis. Ratt said it best: "Round and round!"

Here's one that actually does work, but you need a diesel vehicle. You can run your car on vegetable oil...good luck getting that french fry smell out of your car! The beauty about this is restraunts have to pay to dispose of their used cooking oil, so you can get hooked up with a local restaurant and take it off their hands for free.

Re: One Word....: GAS

We've had this topic before..if I remember correctly it mutated and got itself closed, so...

I'll join Eva in laughing...bwahahahahaha....we've been used to prices in the region of $9 pg for years already, so the shock is much less for us. Moreover, 'we' tend (on the whole) to drive considerably lighter cars with much smaller engines and greater fuel efficiency, 'we' tend (on the whole) to have much bigger and better public transport systems, and some of us are lucky enough to live in countries that actively promote and stimulate cycling.

And, on the whole, 'we' over here tend to have shorter distances to travel to work, which makes a huge difference!

Re: One Word....: GAS

Hmm, I made a search under 'gas' to make sure it hadn't been posted before but maybe I missed it...

But yeah, it seems to me like (not like I'd know by anything other than word of mouth) public transportation is much bigger in Europe as a whole. I guess the biking I'm doing now will be preparation for my big Eurotrip after senior year...Amsterhammer remind me to visit you when I'm in Amsterdam (a must for any graduate taking a post-graduation pre-college trip to Europe).

When I saw this, I thought we were talking about Guitar Acquisition Syndrome, and now I'm just wondering which is harder on the pocketbook.

Re: One Word....: GAS

The cost of of living here in UK/Northern Ireland is getting ridiculous.  Petrol now is £1.60 a litre, Home Heating Oil and food all getting expensive and salaries aren't rising to cope with it.  My wife an i are on a low income and it will get to the stage were we will have to choose whether to put food on the table or heat the house and with a 16 month old child its not an easy decision to make.  They blame wars in various countries for the hike in oil prices but in reality the consumer is lining the Fat Cats pockets with more Dollars/pounds while they rub their hands together.  They don't stop and think how these prices affects the people.
