Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I didn't watch much of his work on the TV, but very much enjoyed his book, "Wisdom Of Our Fathers." RIP.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

Being a resident of the UK I hadn't heard of Tim Russert, but his passing seems to have inspired almost the same reaction as the death of Alistair Cook in Britain a couple of years ago. Tim was obviously a great guy, modest and humble and appreciated by many. I've found the following appreciation on an English newspaper website which just goes to show how well he was thought of.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I found myself very upset by the news of Tim Russert's passing.  He was simply above the fray of the normal TV political analyst.  I didn't even know until this weekend that he was a fellow attorney, making it all the more remarable that he was both universally respected AND liked.  When someone who has that combination passes away, you know the world has lost someone very special.  I'm just glad that he got to see his son graduate from college a few weeks ago.  My heart goes out to his parents, especially his beloved father Big Russ, as no parent should ever have to bury their child.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I think that the tattoo story with Tim's son is so monumental on every level, it makes me laugh and cry and its not even me that it happen to...kinda' hit me over the head in a pick your battles with your teens kinda' way and also made me think of some of the worries I caused my parents as a teen...really deep lessons learned from this book on life's journey of parental relationships and their different stages...  The tattoo story is on page 3, I just really get choked up about this and if Tim could have picked his date for meeting up with the man upstairs, he would have approved of Father's Day weekend.  It certainly made me very reflective, which all goes back to that Eagles line....in a New York minute, everything can change...

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

You may not remember this, but the last couple of times Joe played in Florida, he played 3 shows each time and I started posts titled 'Florida, Florida, Florida'.  It's true Joe played three times in Florida, but somebody else had already coined that phrase.

Most Americans already know about the white board, but if you don't I'll remind you.  Back in 2000, during the presidential election between George Bush and Al Gore, the race was so tight that Tim brought out this little white board and began writing on it.  He predicted how the outcome of the election would be determined.  He held up his little white board and he had written on it...

Florida
Florida
Florida

Unfortunately for us Floridians, He was right, as he usually was.  I'll never forget it.  We thought that election would never end but it all came down to Florida, Florida, Florida... sad

I'm sure going to miss him.

Meet the Press was always a show I stumbled onto...and then never turned the channel after finding it.

Susan,
I didn't know until this weekend that the famous white sign ended up in the Smithsonian and that Meet The Press was on TV for 60 years, the longest show ever!  I saw Luke on TV last night, seems like Tim & Maureen raised a very fine young man, not surprising...also didn't know he does a show on XM radio.  Its certainly not the last we heard of Luke.  I'm wondering what his college major was, poli-sci?

Hi Patty,

That has to be the ultimate small world story.  I wanted to make sure you knew about this article.

It's a small world......found out today that my current "BIG boss" at my part-time job at the Iowa Cubs stadium, Michael Gartner was president of NBC News (1988-1993) and responsible for Tim Russert's hiring.  Here are some of his memories:

NOT HANDSOME ENOUGH?  "Tim didn't think he'd be very good and, quite frankly, he told me he didn't think he was handsome enough to go on national television," said Gartner, Russert's boss when both worked at NBC.
QUOTE:  "I told him he's not handsome, but that he didn't have to be handsome.  He just had to be good, which he was.  He was very good." Gartner spoke after learning Russert had died of a heart attack.  "Not just one of the best, Tim was the best," Gartner said.  "He was caring, what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of guy."
THEIR RELATIONSHIP:  One of Russert's books includes a touching passage about Gartner's son, Christopher, who died of juvenile diabetes in 1994 at the age of 17.  Russert sent Gartner a note when Christopher died, saying, in essence, that if God would have offered a deal to have a son for only 17 years or not at all, that Gartner would have taken the deal. "I lost a friend today," Gartner said.  "I lost a great friend."

I was quite taken aback to find out that the man who always walks past and says "Hello" every game is Michael Gartner.  It's a small world.........

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

Joe:  I hope you had a chance to catch some of the coverage of the wake and memorial service for Tim Russert.  People from every walk of life, from every corner of the country, politicians of both parties came to pay their respects.  It was beautiful and remarkable, including a performance of Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen by video from Europe.

If you didn't have time, and given your schedule I could certainly understand that, know that one upstate NY's greatest sons was sent home in a manor befitting the first-class person he was.

Thanks for posting that Angela, I hadn't seen it.  I worked the ballpark tonight and just like clockwork Mr. Gartner walked past and said hello.  I wanted to ask him about Tim, but "ChickenMan" was at the game tonight and it was just all a little too chaotic around me.  I'll catch up with him one of these days.  thanks again             Patty

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I watched the Eulogy for Tim Russert last night when his colleagues and son spoke about him, it was really very amazing to listen to everyone's story about Tim.  Bruce Springsteen was simulcasted from Europe and spoke a little and played Thunder Road.  Then straight from Tim's ipod they played "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at the end as people were leaving and when everyone went outside there was a larger than life rainbow over Washington, DC!!!!  Not surprising in some ways for a guy with so much faith, but still it was totally remarkable in every way!! " It Was Wild!!!"  as Tim would say.
