Topic: The next level, again

It seems like every time I go see Joe, he has taken another step. From my perspective four rows back at Riverbend in Chattanooga, he's done it again. Clearly, Joe is continuing to focus his show in a classic rock framed vision of his torrid blues sense. Bridge To Better Days was received as the blues rock anthem it is. It was like watching ZZ Top do Waitin' for the Bus in 1973. The crowd was crumpled up in funk from the opening bass drum beat. So Many Roads was a like reading a dark novella about a tragic life underscored by an absolultely searing solo that brought folks to their knees. Mountain Time was an epic journey in pacing and textures. The deafening and sustained response from what was largely a group of music lovers who had heard about, but not heard Joe had to have been extreamly rewarding to Joe and the band.

High Water Everywhere was met by a downpour of rain that continued through Sloe Gin which featured Joe literally "standing in the rain" for his solo. He said that if we could gut it out, he could too.

A highlight for me was the reworking of Don't Burn Down That Bridge. He is continuing to explore the blues rock genre by creating new riffs that are drenched in the emotion of the blues yet crunch with the spirit of Led Zeppelin et al. Find something to hold on to when this one kicks off, gang. It's wicked funky rockin cool.

As others have remarked Joe looks like the confident master he is, cool black outfit, a little Hollywood in his hair. He was animated on stage and played to everyone in attendance. No one was having more fun that Joe and the boys.

Run, don't walk to the nearest venue to see the greatest blues guitarist on the planet as he continues to create his own version of the blues that I believe will land him in a new place for singer/guitarists, a place that only he can inhabit.

Blessings,
Larry

Re: The next level, again

Larry, you hit the nail on the head - your words are just so true!

I´m pretty young and have not seen nearly as many shows and bands as some people here on the forum - but I´ve seen and heard some and nothing ever impressed me like Joe and the guys.
They are THE Band for me - nothing like it wherever you look. Am I sounding a bit fanatical right now?! lol
I also think about these four guys as a Band - not one leader and three other musicians ... they have played so many shows together by now and they just keep on getting better and better and they interact so well together - it´s just a joy to listen to them... Well, I guess we all know what I´m talking about, right?! wink

Thanks for the great review, Larry!

Re: The next level, again

Eva, you may be young in years but not in heart. I think it is a mature observation that Joe's band is a team effort. Sure, Joe is out front--like he says, it's his name on the ticket. But they play as a unit, inspiring each other and creating a spirit of kindred passion that is hard to describe but is clearly there when you look with your heart...and that takes maturity.

Blessings,
Larry

Thanks Larry .... smile
That´s another point which amazes me about Joe and the guys - they have fans lets say from about 14 to 64, trough all the generations. Only really good music is able to do that!

Re: The next level, again

Wonderful review Larry!! You are right..Joe keeps ramping up his performances. Hard to believe that's even possible. Many of us at the Birchmire didn't recognize the new incarnation of "Don't Burn Down That Bridge"!!! Only Carl...(smart arse)...

I know I've hitched my cart to the right horse! What a great ride!!   Thanks again, Cathy

Re: The next level, again

Great review Larry. I haven't seen Joe and the boys since February and I am sooo ready for another dose of the best live music on the planet. Can't wait for Liverpool in three weeks.

I'm really jealous of you Tripsy, and all the other forum members going to the Liverpool gig. I too haven't seen him since February, and I'm gonna miss this one. Another kick in the teeth is that Joe and the guys just played at Birmingham, AL. which is where I'll be flying out to in a couple of weeks. Would have loved to experience a Joe show American style too. From the videos I've seen, it really does look like the band is really playing on another level, even tighter than before...if that's possible.

Not wanting to wish the summer away (summer???? what's that.....I hear you say) but I can't wait for November to arrive!! cool

Re: The next level, again

Very well articulated description of my feelings from the 2 shows last week at the Birchmere.  Unfortunately, while I'm normally very good with words, after seeing Joe, the best I can usually get out is "WOW!"

It really does feel like we're watching a prodigy coming into his own, finding himself musically and as an entertainer and I couldn't be happier to be a part of it.

Thanks for the excellent desription of the show.
