Topic: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

Hey Everybody,
Say a prayer for the late Tim Russert the pride of Buffalo NY and all us upstate New Yorkers.  As you might know by now Im a bit of a political buff and I would watch Tim's program Meet the Press almost every Sunday.  In the days so many loud mouth Blah blah blah political pundits, Tim was in a class by himself.  He treated everybody on that program with respect, called them out on their BS and did by being the smartest guy in the room. He was one of the last of the old school. The word Class comes to mind when describing him.  I was very saddend today by this news..
Sincerely
Joe Bonamassa

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

He was the only one out there that helped you understand politics and he never ruffled feathers  or caused controversy for the sake of ratings. Not religous but I said a prayer!

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I heard the news tonight too and am almost sick with grief.  I feel like I've lost a friend.  I watch "Meet The Press" almost every Sunday Morning.  The thing about Tim Russert is he was above all, a true American.  He was so smart.  He would nail you on the left and nail you on the right. He didn't care.  He just wanted the truth.  I don't know how we're going to get thru this presidential election without him.  Nobody can fill his shoes IMO.  It is truly a sad, sad day.  I'm really going to miss him.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I, too will miss Tim Russert.  A Sunday morning staple... What an intelligent human being!  I was at work and looked up at the TV in the bank lobby and saw it, it was like being punched in the gut.  Touching replays of him with and speaking about his father.  God Speed Tim Russert...........prayers, faith, hope, and love.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I heard the news tonight, very sad.  Tim was so enthusiastic, a real pleasure to listen to and most important to me, I thought he had incredible integrity.  Anthony had a special fondness for him and is freaked he is only 6 years older than him and also he always related to him on a personal level, their fathers were so very similar in their backgrounds...Tim's dad held down two jobs as a truck driver and a sanitation worker and Tim was the first in the family to go to college, then law school.  I heard a clip that said Tim received over 60,000 letters in response to his book about his dad, so many people could relate to his story about a dad from the "greatest generation".  It seems extra profound that its Father's Day weekend.  I'm glad Tim got to see his son graduate from Boston College and that he took a nice trip to Italy with his wife & son Luke.  RIP Tim.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I agree Joe.  I was saddened by this news.  Russert seemed like a fantastic, kind-hearted, genuine human being.  He was an amazing moderator who loved to share his passion for politics with his viewers.  I learned about our entire political process growing up watching him on Today, Meet The Press and during election coverage.  I am a huge political buff and Russert definately contributed to my interest in the topic.  Rest in peace Mr. Russert.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I will Joe,

If you all say he was a very good, honest man I believe you, but I don't know him. Heard it on the news  here in Holland too.

Always very sad when a good person dies.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

He was by far the best political interviewer/moderator on TV. I watched him almost every morning on the Today show, and every Sunday on Meet the Press. He was the best because he always asked the tough questions, always was completely prepared, but was also always very courteous and likeable. He also had an incredible insight. I never knew that he had a law degree until last night, but that kind of explains his interview style. You knew everyone who came on the show better know their stuff, or he would nail them (with a smile).

Tim was one of those lucky people who was doing what he was put on this earth to do, and he will be sorely missed. There is no one else that comes close.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

What a loss.  A journalist's journalist who was a partisan for the truth.  Rarer still in that while he was tough as nails he was not mean, and he was always fair and allowed people a chance to explain themselves (if they could).  And just a really good man.  In addition to class, two words I associate with Tim are integrity and authenticity.  In today's world of hyper-partisanship, he will be sorely missed.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

I hear you Joe.  He was a giant in the news industry and didn't let his guests spin. He was definitely the best interviewer I've ever seen. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

On one of the archived interviews I saw last night, Tim said that he would host "Meet the Press" until the Bills won the Super Bowl.  Maybe this will be our year? RIP Tim. We'll miss you.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

It's a small world......found out today that my current "BIG boss" at my part-time job at the Iowa Cubs stadium, Michael Gartner was president of NBC News (1988-1993) and responsible for Tim Russert's hiring.  Here are some of his memories:

NOT HANDSOME ENOUGH?  "Tim didn't think he'd be very good and, quite frankly, he told me he didn't think he was handsome enough to go on national television," said Gartner, Russert's boss when both worked at NBC.
QUOTE:  "I told him he's not handsome, but that he didn't have to be handsome.  He just had to be good, which he was.  He was very good." Gartner spoke after learning Russert had died of a heart attack.  "Not just one of the best, Tim was the best," Gartner said.  "He was caring, what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of guy."
THEIR RELATIONSHIP:  One of Russert's books includes a touching passage about Gartner's son, Christopher, who died of juvenile diabetes in 1994 at the age of 17.  Russert sent Gartner a note when Christopher died, saying, in essence, that if God would have offered a deal to have a son for only 17 years or not at all, that Gartner would have taken the deal. "I lost a friend today," Gartner said.  "I lost a great friend."

I was quite taken aback to find out that the man who always walks past and says "Hello" every game is Michael Gartner.  It's a small world.........

Geez Patty,
What a touching story.  It's hard to explain why Tim Russert touched so many peoples heart but this story is a perfect example of why.  I was listening to the Today Show (which was dedicated to him) this morning and it was such a somber occasion. Both his co-workers,  his rivals, President Bush and other politicians who that had been interviewed by him had their stories to tell.  Talk about Soulshine.  This guy really had it and it really did shine.

I haven't read his books yet, but I think I will now.

It really is a small world....

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

"Meet the Press" has had some kind of run, I believe maybe it's the longest running show on network television.  It has had it's share of boring episodes, but they were NOT during the Tim Russert era! Those eyes!  Upstate New Yorkers know the "Don't try to B.S. me look..." When he looked that certain way at the camera, you knew something special was coming.  Saddened indeed.

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

When I heard the news I was shocked! Like everybody has said, he was a Sunday Morning tradition...the place you went to get the truth...Ironic that I'm writing this on Father's Day, as his book about his Dad was his last.

We also lost Jim McKay this week..We all knew him from Wide World of Sports, esp. his coverage of the horrid turn of events at the Olympics in Munich. He was a Marylander, so it hit us a bit harder.

Both of these men will be impossible to replace. They just don't make them like this anymore!   RIP to them both!!!       Cathy

Re: Rest in Peace Tim Russert

Beyond his beautiful smile and his jovial happy state, Tim's eyes always had a twinkle to them, he had very Irish eyes and they always smiled...he was a very special, good and kind human being, honest with no bull, didn't push his own agenda or views and very honorable in his ways and that is why I think so many people connected to him.  I admire a passionate guy when I see one, Tim went to Woodstock sporting his Buffalo Bills jersey with a case of beer...:)  RIP Tim.

Summing up Tim in 6 words....

INTEGRITY. INTELLIGENT. NEVER FORGOT HIS ROOTS.
