Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

Parts I can agree with others I can't.  Obviously fender makes a buttload of guitars trying to hit all markets, the guitar I buy for my 11 year old ain't the ones I play.  Every player is looking for different things in a strat or tele, there are so many different variations it's ridiculous.  There are good instruments being made, they don't all have to come out of the custom shop to be good.  I would argue their quality control for their upper level instruments is better than Gibson's and has been for some time. It's almost impossible to pickup a gibson in a store and not find some kind of finish flaw, don't get me wrong, I like, own and play gibsons also.  That said fender puts out a fair amount of junk, for some folks thats what they can afford or like.  I have 3 Jeff Beck models and 3 mid 90's strat plus models. thats what I like.  I played with other guitarist who whined about the lace sensor PU's.  I made them turn their backs and played the becks, plus's, and a vintage early 60's.  Other than the vintage 60 cycle hum few could discern a true difference and they all sounded great. The Robert Cray is a nice hardtail, the Eric Johnson is really sweet.  The Danny Gatton tele is alot of fun.  Even after a weak defense of strats (not necessarily fender) they are what they are with all their inherent flaws.  None of them can stack up to a Tom Anderson at any level.  Joe may be pissed at the company and absolutely rightfully so, but at one point he obviously had a fondness for them.  I go through phases with my guitars, I may not play a strat for several months but when I come back to them I thouroughly enjoy it.  I can only have one wife, but I can have a ton of guitars! Enjoy. Dave

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

I wouldnt trade mine for the world, I got a MIJ '62 which I love a recently bought 2nd hand for super cheap £250 Deluxe with noiseless pups and ash body, needs some work but the body was flawless although the saddles where naffed so im currently messing around with it hardware wise and a early look highway one which is and always will be my goto guitar it just sits so naturally in my hands and sounds so nice...

Ive tried Gibsons out but I can never justify the money on them, recently tried a Custom with a 60's neck it played really nice but for the best part of £1500 I wouldnt want to play it... Mebe if I could pick a edwards up or somet after all for me a guitars for playing not drooling over smile although there is a fair amount of that!!

I have a stock standard cherry red Tele, and I wouldn't trade it for any other guitar.

Thanks for the link, I remember when they were talking about making this film.  Just ordered it on amazon.  I'm truely not in a fender, gibson, anderson, prs camp.  If I pick up a guitar and it makes me feel good playing it, it's all good!  As far as the business  crap one would hope they would do better by the artist,  I'll have to hold my breath for the Dr. Dave autograph pedal

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

Hey Dr. Dave and anyone else,

The Solidbodies: The Fifty Year Guitar War seems to have some hefty copy protection on board, which may cause issues with some DVD players. I got mine from Amazon and it skipped and acted like it was damaged. They sent me another one and the same thing happened. I tested it in three DVD players before I tossed it in my computer and low and behold it played just fine.

I did manage to make a backup of it, which plays just fine in a normal DVD player. It is a pretty good show, but the manufacturer should warn you about possible compatibility issues.

Back on track, I really don't blame Joe for feeling the way he does about Fender. I am not particular brand wise and have both Gibson and Fender instruments. Which one I play seems to be more of a mood or attitude decision at any given time.

My first guitar was a piece of crap made in Korea out of plywood or something and I don't miss it at all. It is just too bad that sometimes a company will try to capitalize on something without taking into consideration the people it may affect.

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

I got home this afternoon and my "60's reverse headstock strat" was waiting for me.  I couldn't find any flaws on the finish and it plays pretty sweet, but I think I'll rip off the 9s tomorrow and put on a set of Ernie Ball 11s.

Are you kidding?  If it plays sweet, why are you changing the string guage!?

going from 9's to 11's will probably require at least a neck adjustment, but maybe even nut replacement and bridge adjustment depending on your action. the springs on the tremolo will need to be tightened if you tune to 440.

I use 11's on my strat, but that's all I've ever run on it. I'm usually a Gibson guy. You'll be able to tell a difference in bending the strings when you go up to 11's. Do you play acoustics a lot?  It will require extra playing to keep your hands in the kind of shape it needs to play 11's comfortably...at least that was the case for me.  You could not play for one or two years and play a guitar with 9's on it...comfortably. But with 11's it'll be more difficult. Putting 11's on a strat takes away some of it "edge" and "Sparkle." Strats with 9's I always though sounded too jangly and I used the knobs on the amp to adjust. With 11's on it I'm using the amp to intensify the jangle. If that makes any sense. Those crappy Texas Special pickups are part of my problem though.

Let me know how you like your strat with 11's! I love Ernie Ball strings. I use the 10's on all my guitars and the 11's on my strat.

I think one of Joe's quotes was "string guage is not a test of manhood" - it's pretty much a question of how fast you wanna get carpel tunnel syndrome. lol

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

I'm new at this sort of thing... I'm still in the experimental phase. The action on the new strat is nice, but it sounded a little thin. Rather than swap out the pups I thought I'd try heavier gauge strings and detune by 1/2 note to E flat. I get all the jangle I need from the my Rics.  Ever tried one of the Danelectro reissues with the lipstick tube pups?  I had to get one after watching Jimmy Page tear one up on the Led Zepplin DVD set, of course his was an original.  The Danectros are known as the "poor man's Rickenbacker" and you can get some astonishing jangle out of them. MF had them for $250. Chinese make, yes but decent quality.

Hey, I'll be working in Warren next week and probably hanging at the Kona Grill scoping out the eye candy. Maybe see you there!

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

A found that a friend of a friend has one of the masterbuilt 64 gold sparkle strats. We were at this dudes home last night and I was able to play it and took the time to look it over very very close. I just don't see where it's the same as JB's. It's just not the same. In my opinion it's not even close.

Joe if you would like to talk about it, email me and I'll give you my number. Take care of yourself Amigo.

Sincere Respects,
Spider

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

Got my copy today, very dissapointed.  kinda like a high school project. Nice to see Joe and some of the other "stars", but the guys the had doing the demos were average at best.  Your right the damn film froze and pixelated every 5 minutes!

Something really funny, I've been defending strats (love'm, always will), but I was down in the GAS Chamber yesterday, thinking about this thread,  picked up my Les Paul Standard Gold Top which I convinced myself for the last coupla years played awful, Now I'm in love again, lifes a kick in the shorts!

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

Im going to chime in here for a second.  I dont post much here but do visit often

I didnt read past the 4th page

I think this is the problem with the Internet.  I know everything (thats published and whatever nonsense is on the message boards) about Joe.  Its too much.  It loses its flavor after a while and I agree with Joe and all the SRV comparisons.  Stevie was great but why does every journalist have to go there.  Music journalist that dont listen to the artist they are interviewing?  Its common place and why?  Because its the Internet and its too much info

I have two fav bands
The Tragically Hip
Opeth

Both bands are "arty" but its getting to the point where there is so much info out there and so many interviews that it takes away from the music.  And Opeths music is just crazy from a guitar stand point.

As for the gold Strat thats shame Fender did that.  They owe you Joe

Like I mentioned I own every JB album and have about 20 boots (thanks Jane) but I stopped coming here because I want the let the music speak to me.  Not the posts on the message board

I guess the SRV comparisons tick me off and lack of professionalism in journalist today

I understand your frustration Joe. I've had my rounds with Fender also. I dont know where or why the company has has gone south. But they have.(contact me Joe if you want to hear my 3 horror stories) I enjoy whatever your playing.Musicians can undertsand the tonal quest a bit more then fans who just dig the music. Play what sounds good to you as your are doing, and the best will flow from your fingers.Looking forward to your next trip through Illinois. You tore it up in Rockford. I had the pleasure of standing @the stage right in front of you. Your concert was my 16 yrs old sons 1st live show. He dug it. Keep it up your doing great.
