Topic: Porcupine Tree

Hi All,

Is there anyone out there into Porcupine Tree.
I saw them live a year or so ago while they were touring their latest album “Fear of a Blank Planet” and thought they excellent, although an acquired taste.

No matter how far you try to push the envelope, it remains stationery

Re: Porcupine Tree

A friend of mine loves them - always plays their songs on guitar ... but I haven´t heard a song in the "original" yet - gotta take a look now smile

Yes, I like them. I got into them around about In Absentia (which is a great album to start with for anyone who wants to give them a try), and ended up getting all their catalogue. Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are both good albums too.....though their earlier stuff is more spacey and lengthy ala Pink Floyd, when compared to their recent music which is definitely heavier and concise.

Re: Porcupine Tree

Yeah I'm really into this band for the past 2 months or so. I love most of their stuff. The live dvd, Arriving Somewhere... is a regular here. It's a really diverse band with styles varying from piano flavoured pop to metal.
They'll be in holland in october so I'll be ordering tickets this week when they go on sale.

Re: Porcupine Tree

I've heard about them many times but never heard them before.

Listening to them now for the first time...they're pretty good.  I'm going to have to pick up one of their cd's I think. wink

Here's a great acoustic performance of their song Sentimental by their main man Steven Wilson: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=9cJwLcBW3Ow

Re: Porcupine Tree

Porcupine Tree are awesome. steven wilson is an amazing talent. I've also got a couple of CD's by his other group"NoMan"-which are quite different. Much slower and more ambient. I love the harder darker stuff on "In Absentia" and "Deadwing" which are both great, but I think "Stupid Dream" and "Lightbulb Sun" are my favs. They are a little more on the pop side, with great lush harmonies, great guitar work, and just superb songwriting. I was very disappointed though with their latest-"Fear of a Blank Planet"-its not just the dark and brooding lyrics, even though thats part of it. The songs are just not near as original as the previous 4 or 5 discs. The older stuff is much more etheral,atmosheric,ambient,etc.-they started doing what they do best with "Stupid Dream" in my opinion. And yes, the DVD is GREAT!

It's classic when he break his guitar string on "Trains"-awesome moment, glad they didn't edit it for the DVD.
